Remember Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid? "Wax on, wax off"; this was his ancient wisdom, condensed into simple wrist circulation. Miyagi's "advice"--both vague and unsolicited--seemed entirely unrelated to the task at hand (i.e. becoming the next Bruce Lee, baby!) And yet: those words weren't wishy-washy, as the car-washing mantra later proved invaluable. Wax on/wax off. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.I'm here to tell you that Elana at The Wax Bar is a modern-day Mr. Miyagi. Blonder, more smiley, an unabashed fangirl of Death Cab for Cutie--but, all the same, a guru and guiding light. She is professional and quick. But neither quality gets in the way of her "bedside manner." Her hands are that of an artist-cum-surgeon's: deft, flexible, light. Elana is dependably gentle, soft, and compassionate with every ripped strip. (Wince!) She's seen her fair share of hair and exudes a sense of mastery and cool. I relax when in her care, knowing that pubes, pits, brows and furry ursine backs don't daunt her. Exuding yogic calm and generous acceptance, Elana brings a clean energy and authenticity to what she does. And, let's be honest: what she does is pretty gnarly. Ridding one's vulva of coarse, stubborn hair isn't really a meditative experience. Clients come to her feeling vulnerable and uncertain; Elana is quick to assuage their fears. Of course, the atmosphere at the Bar is already one of sophistication, cleanliness and peace. From the breezy waiting area (stocked with boutique-chic jewelry and gifts) to the soothing spa rooms (cozy bed! honeyed soundtrack!), The Wax Bar hits all the right notes. If you're going to uproot the weeds on your Lady Lawn, you might as well do it in such a lavish, lovely space. If you're nervous about your first Big Wax--or just looking to upgrade your usual follicular routine: book an appointment with Elana. I can vouch for her sunny disposition and fine technique. In, out: hair today, gone tomorrow. Finish smooth and sleek and happy you went to the best of the best. Not only do I leave with a delightfully hair-free peach macaron of a mons pubis, but also with a daily word of wisdom and pep in my step. Thank you, Elana, for turning this hirsute duckling into a waxed and moisturized swan. Read Less
