Horrible experience when I went in for a Mother’s Day pampering. I tried a new stylist. When I asked her to correct the areas of hair that were sticking up she answered, “that’s just the way it is. There is nothing I can do about it.” When I asked for the round brush blow dry to be smoother and shinier she said, “ you really needed two appointments.” She then told the front desk staff to book me for two time slots next time. The front desk staff was less than friendly. Thank goodness the manager was great and offered me a full refund. Other times I have been there I have used another stylist which is amazing. Unfortunately, she was not available that day. Next time I will only go if my usual stylist is available. I could have received better treatment and quality at a much cheaper salon. The massage was absolutely four stars, but the spa experience was two or three. I checked in right at my assigned time and was told to sit in the main lobby. The host explained someone would be back soon to take me to the spa area. After 20 minutes (and five minutes in to my massage time), I went back up to the counter to ask if I should continue to wait in the same area. So this place as saved my hair! It’s pricy but worth it! I used to have my hair done at the same place I did my nails, a lovely hole in the wall with great service. However I didn’t realize the damage they were doing to my hair. I have been going here for about 3 years now and the stylist are super friendly and know hair! They could tell my hair type is very difficult to manage and my goal of growing it out was going to take some work, on their part as well as mine. I had my haircut here for the first time today. I had Hazel who was awesome! I am growing my hair out, and hadn't cut it in a while. Since I'm growing it out I just wanted to trim and clean it up. She did that for me and made the cut so much better too! I absolutely love it and am so happy to have found her - it is really hard to find a match for hair - for me at least. Kelsy was great! I came in for a partial balayage and she was honest and asked all the right questions. I showed her a few pictures and she got it right! She dried just one piece and asked if I wanted to tone it down-I loved it but great that she asked. Love love the color.For cut I went to Dakota. She was great and friendly. I just asked for some basic layering and basically a trim and she did that. Pretty pricey for a basic cut but that was my choice obviously. She was a little too quick and I wish it was a little more detail oriented. In terms of front desk I can see they were not attentive. Calls go to call center, who don't know about hair. The tipping is weird and the front desk lady was pushy. I would recommend bringing  cash for tip. I wish the front desk lady wasn't as pushy during this process-it made me want to come in less.I got a $25 off next service and I will totally be using it to see Kelsy for a gloss/touch up in a few weeks. I'm wondering if, after being a loyal customer for 20 years, I need to change salons. Today after receiving color, I was approached by the wrong hair cutter. I told reception and they said just because someone consults on my haircut (before color) it doesn't mean they will be cutting my hair. I had been booked with the hair cutter who consulted me. Sound screwed up? It was. I'm so frustrated that I left without a haircut and without my other scheduled brow color/arch.No apology from a manager. I'm left with part of the service completed. Soooooo frustrated I may not go back.I had scheduled a three person pedicure manicure last month and the whole appointment was cancelled.There's got to be a better way... Read Less

I always end up getting booked here because all of their other locations are fully booked by 9am for any given day (my fault). Nail techs here are always lovely, but front desk should ask you of you have shellac to remove, and also make sure they have enough time to do it when you DO mention it. Customer service could use some improvement. And good luck if you have acrylic tips, there are only 2 people here who can do fills, and even if you don't need a fill they make you feel like you're  inconveniencing them because they have to file the shellac off instead of soaking off. I had a great experience at Gene Juarez! I had a haircut with a deep conditioning. My stylist had an assistant who gave me a scalp massage during my shampoo. Also, the deep conditioning really made my hair feel soft. Everyone was very friendly and I was offered a robe and tea. I'm really happy with my haircut. My only reservation is how expensive it was. It was my first visit, so I got $20 off and even so still paid over $100. It might be too expensive to make a habit, but I definitely recommend it as a great place to treat yourself! Read Less

If i could give a negative 5 i would... trust me. I went here last Saturday, the day before easter, to get a quality hair cut. Now before i go on you must know that my hair is my most prize possession. I hadnt cut my hair in over 2 years. It was over a foot long. So I get this girl named hazel that my mom recommended. I said not once, not twice but i told her three times to keep my hair as long as possible. I told her to KEEP THE LENGTH. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR AT THE END. THIS DUMBY CUT OFF 4 INCHES OF MY BELOVED HAIR. I AM NEVER EVER COMING BACK HERE. THEY WOULD HAVE TO DRAG MY COLD DEAD BODY IN HERE TO GET ME TO GO HERE AGAIN. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. I'll preface this rating by saying I've been a Gene Juarez customer (always for hair services) for almost 15 years and have had exceptional service and experienced incredible quality in their salons. I recently decided to try out their nail services, especially because Northgate was having a "flash sale" on all same-day services. I've booked twice (one pedicure, one shellac manicure) with London, who was so great - super nice, not chatty (this may not be a good fit for others, but it was a perfect fit for me - she seems to tune in to what the customer prefers and naturally engages people at the level they seem to want, which is awesome), and clearly great at her job. I would highly recommend her if going for nail services at the Northgate location. However, I'm really disappointed in the quality of shellac that Gene Juarez supplies their spas with. I've had so many shellac manicures before at other salons and continue to like them because of how long they last. At my regular nail salon in Portland, I get shellac and it lasts three weeks before even beginning to peel. You can imagine my extreme disappointment when (for twice the price), my shellac started peeling two days after I got my manicure. Two days! This is basically unheard of. And London's quality was great, so I can only deduce that this is due to the quality of the product itself. It's now almost a week in, and some other nails have started to peel. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for regular pedicures, but I'll never go here for shellac again. It's a complete waste of money given they charge so much and it's ruined days after, as if you got a regular manicure. So my girlfriend referred me to this location, I booked it with her colorist. Upon sitting down I informed her I had extensions and was then told per company policy she isn't allowed to touch my hair. I asked to compromise seeing if I could sign anything basically giving her permission. After talking to her manager, we reached a compromise that I could book an appointment with their Master Colorist and Balayage Specialist, Shawn. I was able to schedule something the following day at 10:30AM. While booking the appointment at the front desk, I asked how much it would be and roughly how long it would take because I had an 8 week old puppy at home that I could only leave alone for so long. I was informed it should only take an hour and a half and that it would be about $175. I thought great!Here's the laundry list of problems I had....-The results looked NOTHING like the photo-I wanted to add more dark into my hair with a natural balayage-Result: Chunky 2000s messy highlights at the top; brown/bleach (almost white) spots around my ENTIRE crown (from first glance you would think I had bald spots in weird places where it wasn't orange); color splotches all underneath my hair with more spots, several patchy colors in 1 or several strands including bleach blonde, orange, dark brown and yellow (I could have done a better job doing it out of a box with no experience)-I was there from 10:30AM - 3:15PM-When I went to the counter I told them I was disappointed and that it doesn't look at all like what I wanted and was then told it would be nearly $300 It wasn't me being hard on myself but literally all my friends and coworkers first glance have said, geeze what happened to your hair or oh my God... Not the reaction you want when you get your hair done.I rushed back home to let my puppy out as I felt terrible I left her home for so long. I didn't have time to speak with the manager at the salon and didn't tip because I was furious for being slapped with that cost for a 'master colorist and balayage specialist' to do a horrible job. Upon returning home I called back immediately. The manager was very nice however I did not receive a refund, instead I only got $70 back and told him I wanted it fixed for free but that I didn't want to return to the Northgate location;. He informed me someone from University Village could do it and that he would have someone call me right away. Please note this was on Friday, September 23rd and it is now Tuesday, September 27th and I've received no phone call...To say I am furious is an understatement as my hair looks ridiculous and I can't even wear a hat to hide it nor can I wear it up or even tuck it behind my ears....I would NEVER recommend this salon or Gene Juarez to anyone. This place has really gone downhill. Got an appointment with a "stylist" named Heather. I asked for her to keep my length the same, layers and framing around the face. She starts cutting the length of my hair...and then starts asking me questions about where I want my layers. But these questions were idiotic- no, I don't want short layers up front and long hair in the back. No, I don't want something that looks like a mullet. She responds that she would never do that rolls her eyes at me. She didn't listen to me, cut the length of my hair when I told her not to because I'm growing it out, and then gave me attitude because I told her that I want my layers to look natural and gradual. I asked for another stylist and the manager comes and asks to hear about the "issues that caused the rift". I looked at her and said, "I want a haircut and your stylist couldn't follow directions. I am beyond upset! I've been going to this salon for years. My colorist is amazing and I love him. But tonights experience has left me wanting to take my business elsewhere. Last week I scheduled a consultation with a stylist for an updo for my daughter to determine a hairstyle for her upcoming wedding. I was told at the time of booking that the consultation would be $150, but that it included the day of hairstyling too. What a great deal - right?!?! I said sign me up! Tonight I take my daughter to Gene Juarez and after the consultation paid for the service. I was then told it would be another $150 for the style the day of the wedding. WHAT?!?! I explained to the receptionist that this is not what I was told at the time of booking. The response I received was, ""It's worth it, your daughter will be guaranteed perfect hair the day of her wedding"". I was completely taken by surprised and received no resolution. Ladies beware! From the time I walked, I greeted, asked if I would anything to drink and given a wrap to change into. My hairdresser, Denise was very prompt. I was looking for a new cut and look.. She was amazing! I have been getting my hair cut and colored at the Split End Salons for years. When they opened the new Gene Juarez at Alderwood, I decided to give it a try. I was a bit confused with the assistance I received at the front desk. The receptionist asked me to take my shirt off and put a plastic gown on. This seemed unecessary to me, since my sweater didn't have a collar, and would have been completely covered by the gown if I had left it on. I was left to wait in the lobby 20 minutes past my appointment...a bit chilly w/out a sweater. The woman who colored my hair appeared to do a decent job. I was surprised to find out that someone different would be cutting my hair. Then I was shocked to learn that there would be a 30 minute gap between the color and cut. I was brought back to the lobby to wait for 30 minutes, with damp, dripping hair. I wasn't offered any water or tea, which surprised me; I thought this was a ""salon SPA"". The woman who cut my hair did a very nice job. It was the highlight of my trip to Gene Juarez. When I checked out at the front desk, the receptionist had a hard time locating my sweater and asked me to come back into the closet to find it. The tipping envelopes were a new thing to me, but ok...whatever. The hair color started washing out within a week. I called back to see if they could fix it, and was hassled by the receptionist who kept insisting that I must not have been using a color-safe shampoo. No offer was made to correct the color problem. I will not recommend the salon at Alderwood. Try the Split End instead. More down-to-earth prices, better organized, and the hair designers seem more real. Read Less

I went to get a brow wax and was left waiting for 15 minutes past my appointment time. When my person finally came to get me, she explained that it had been really slow that day so she had been eating candy in the break room with her friends. Not very professional. It seems if you are late for an appointment, you apologize and leave out the details of lounging around. Gene Juarez's look is very deceiving. With the high ceilings, the hustle and bustle of people, staff members in black, and their expensive hair products, I was conned. Not once, not twice, on 3 separate occasions. The first time I went, I saw an entry priced stylist. No matter how cheap the cut was, it wasn?t worth it. I have long thick hair. They thinned my hair out so much with these stupid shears; it looked like I had fine course hair. I am used to going to high end salons where they texturize your hair manually with their shears, rather than what I call ?cheating scissors.? This contraption was supposed to do the job other stylist do by hand! What a mistake! The layers were uneven, the texture was unmanageable, everything about it was just wrong. I expressed my disgust for my hair to the manager and was discredited for my opinion. After being on the defense with them, I was able to have my hair fixed. I went in a 2nd time to see one of their seasoned stylist. They fixed it, by cutting it shorter and texturizing it even more, after I told them not to. I was still unsatisfied. I once again complained to the manager and they sent me their senior stylist. No joke, I was in and out of his chair in 20 minutes. The service was rushed and he ended up cutting 5 inches. He even stated that there was no way to fix what the previous stylist had done. He was disgusted by my hair when I walked in there and he asked me who cut it for me (thinking it was someone else, not Gene Juarez) and was embarrassed when I said it was Gene Juarez. After the third haircut, it looked better. However I was really sad that I had to cut off 5 inches. Gene Juarez is overrated. It is basically a high end Supercuts. Their customer service is horrible, their stylists know ?template/cookie cutter? haircuts and are not creative, and the service is rushed. I have been on the hunt for a new stylist for a while now. As Gene Juarez in the Alderwood mall is close, I have been there twice. Both times the colorist didn?t listen to me when I explained that while my hair is fine, it grabs up color. When I asked them to let me pick from color swatches they just assured me that they knew the right color for me. Both times I have come out too dark. When I express disapproval, I am offered a redo; I don?t have time for a redo. Listen to me and get it right the first time! Gene Juarez instills an undeserved conceit in their stylists; they don?t listen to the person who knows the most about their hair, the client. I also agree that they push product. They have some product from Europe that only they carry. The stylist was very affected when she explained that the exclusivity is what makes it so good, not too bright, but at least don?t compound it with false pride. The cashiers are also irritating, I work with some of the most amazing people in the country and they have more humility than those cashiers. I will not waste my time or money at Gene Juarez again. The first time I went to Gene Juarez was for a brow wax with my boyfriend. We had difference girls and the job was mediocre at best. I gave them a second chance about a week ago for a facial. The girl tried to start selling me product before I got on the table. The facial was again mediocre at best. It was hard for me to relax while she was pitching products and additional services. I was not that excited about using my $75 gift certificate. I was very pleased with the service and helpful attitudes at the Alderwood Mall Gene Juarez. Denise cut my hair, and she did a great job, it's the best haircut I've had in years. I didn't detect snobbishness from anyone. I also got there about 20 minutes early, and only had to wait a couple of minutes before getting my hair cut. I think many of these review are outdated. My experience was very positive. Read Less

My first experience with Gene Juarez at first, wasn't great. The person I went to did a terrible, I mean terrible job coloring my hair. But then I went right after that to get my hair cut, and the person cutting my hair arranged for the best colorist to come over right then and there and redo my coloring for free. I was so thankful for this, that I've been going to them ever since. All of their staff are great people. They always listen to what you want and don't try to talk you into something you're uncomfortable with. I would strongly suggest if you want your hair done right, go to Gene Juarez.
