Two months ago, I called and scheduled 3 makeovers for yesterday (Mar 17th) and 3 massages for today (Mar 18th) - for one of my besties’ birthday. I am meticulous about record keeping, and wrote all of our appointment times down in my trip planner. We arrived yesterday and had our makeovers done, no problem - and everyone was great! Loved it. We were talking with all of our stylists about how excited we were to come for massages the next day. We arrived today for our mas...sages and were curtly informed that we were not on the schedule. . . At all. We were also told that they couldn’t do anything to help us because these massages were booked “for the last week”. We live on Orcas Island (thus the significant planning requirements), and could not just come another day. The appointments were made all in the same phone call, two months ago, and someone had to have been fairly inept at their job to mess things up so significantly. Valentine worked five hours on my hair yesterday! I am over the moon. She wouldn't let me go until all the coppery brass was gone and gave me a beautiful ash blonde that complimented my skin colour. I went here to get my hair done and the hairdresser must have not known what she was doing because she Melted my long hair that took me 4 years to grow out that was down past my chest she melted it off all the way up to my neck hair line and I had to walk around with a pixie cut and she of corse didn’t charge me for anything but then she MADE me buy 100$ worth of products to save my hair that she chemically damaged what a joke should have gotten all that for free since she messed up my hair so bad and melted it off. DONT GO HERE!!! they don’t know what they are doing they don’t use BB3 either (Brazilian bond builder) it protects hair when being chemically dyed or treated. Read Less

Today I took my wife to Zazen Salon and Spa for a haircut one week before her college graduation and am so upset with the outcome! Normally, she gets her hair styled at Yondersea Hair Salon on meridian, but being a week before graduation, we decided to splurge and go somewhere upscale. After searching through Yelp, and reading the reviews, Zazen looked to be a good fit, so We called and made an appointment. When you first walk in, the place looks great and is very kept up and clean. The receptionist lacked customer service skills, I don't even think I saw her smile. My wife and I showed a photo of the hairstyle she usually gets, and she seemed excited about the haircut and very optimistic! After the haircut, when my wife and I got home and she began to examine and adjust in the mirror, the lack of blending and obvious chunk missing on one side so we went back. In the end, the stylist admitted she went too short, and we got a refund. I'm glad to have my money back, but I would much rather see my wife smiling with confidence and excitement. I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by the lack of effort put into her haircut. My wife should should have walked out feeling confident, sophisticated, and beautiful for her day, instead they left her feeling ugly and insecure questioning if she should walk the graduation stage. I have been taking my daughter to the same stylist for 13 years, we had free time today but my go gal was booked we had the time so I decided it had to be done. So I called Zazen and luckily we got her an appointment. We got a stylist named Emily, she was fantastic, she took her time brushing out my daughters hair and talked to her about she wanted done with her hair. She did exactly what my daughter wanted. My girl after said that she loved the way Emily washed her hair, it was so relaxing. She also loved the fact that she didn't talk her ear off... she was quite and that was relaxing for her. I spent my entire life basically doing my own hair because I was hairstylist for the majority of my adult and young life. I am very partucular about how i like my hair to look and never have met a hairdressee who I felt comfortable enough with to get it professionally. That has all changed now, thanks to Abigail Martin at Zazen Salon and Spa. This young woman has been in the hair industry for a short time and yet that does not at all reflect on her abilities as an amzingly talented, patient, and creative stylist. She was the very first person I felt, knew what I wanted 100% just during the consultation and talking with her. I ended up getting exactly what I wanted and far more than I expected. All the woman at Zazen are amazing and make you feel like you are the most important client to them the whole time you are there. KELSEY the woman that did my facial waxing was just as fantastic in her area of expertise and took care of my problem skin with the upmost care and I walked out of the feeling brand new. I was a bit nervous about getting eyelash extensions but Candice did an amazing job. I was dropped of here for a surprise massage and mani pedi. This place was so welcoming, as soon as I walked through the doors I was walked to the locker room that had a calming affect and multiple amenities. After slipping into a fuzzy robe you're welcomed to a display of teas and treats while you're waiting and a sauna provided with any treatment. As a bride I can't say I would recommend them to another bride if you're looking to do the two part trial and day of hair service. When I went in for the trail I loved the facility and left feeling like it went really well. We proceeded to get our hair done because I already knew what to expect. Wrong. We showed up for hair the day of and the hairstylist had deleted all of her photos and video of my hair and didn't even apologize. She acted like it was no big deal that she was unprepared and had basically gotten paid to do a job during the trial that was completely pointless. My hair the day of did not end up looking how we had planned during the trial and I wasn't able to accommodate my veil. Not to mention the stylist commented on how I needed to correct the coloring in my hair. When I informed her I had paid another hair stylist to do it only the day before she told me she could fix it. I had an amazing experience with Ann. The swedish massage was absolutely wonderful from start to finish--she focused on my tension spots and was professional throughout. She asked which oil I preferred and checked in with me about the pressure. Room was dim and relaxing with calming music. The foot buff treatment was a great addition. It was gentle, yet it did the trick. I came out feeling refreshed and renewed. I'll definitely be returning in the future.Zazen has a tranquil atmosphere. I had a hot stone massage here today by Noelle, and it was absolutely fantastic. The music was gorgeous, atmosphere calm and serene, heated massage table. It was neither too hard no too soft on the pressure, and I probably could have stood a little harder pressure on my neck but I was too zoned out to say anything. :)  Next time I will. My boyfriend and I went in for a couples massage for his birthday. First off, the salon is stunning, clean and welcoming! Sadie & Tana were our masseuses and they are amazing! It took forever to get balayage painted on my hair. I have a lot of hair but wow...plus I felt it was just getting all mashed together. I wish she would've taken a before and after like she said. The end results was so disappointing. It made my hair looked frie...d and orange. When I voiced my concern she (Abigail) was very nice and wanted me to be happy. She took me back agreeing to wet my hair back down and tone it again. The babysitter had shown up with my two children and the owner was holding my baby. Not sure why but apparently it was time to get me and children out, they were done for the day, and tough! So, I went to leave. Soaked hair and all. The receptionist could tell I was bummed. She then ran out after me saying I could have them put in toner and wash out myself, no guarantee on results. That is NOT what you pay $165 (plus tip) for. Zazen has new owners in the past two years, that becomes apparent the minute you walk in, if you have been a guest before. The salon is now separated from the front desk area, and the spa area is further back from that. The nail room is clean and the pedicure tubs (and chairs) are comfortable and clean. The changing room for men is admittedly small, but the bathroom is nice and there is a sauna for them as well. The womens changing room is larger and very nice. The decor is much sleeker, more soothing, and the colors in the back are toned down- more appropriate for a spa. The front salon area is updated with new stations and chairs. The staff, including the new front desk staff, are incredibly friendly and courteous. Courtney had a smile on her face and I didn't experience any rudeness at all. Everyone seems happy to work there and happy to help with any request you have.My facial and peel with Holly was wonderful, she has graceful movements and her knowledge of the products was apparent as she worked on me. My skin feels refreshed and wonderful! Zazen uses high quality products and the location is beautiful. I will be getting body waxing, a massage, and a cut and color soon! My tip is to arrive a little early so that you can get changed into a robe and take a steam in the sauna before your appointment. Read Less

This place is awesome!  I got my eyelashes and brows tinted here, black and brown respectively.  The esthetician who did this, Kelsey?, a younger blond woman, was incredibly gentle and kind, and she did a perfect job.  She matched the color of my brows  perfectly to my dark blonde lowlights.  No one has ever done such a great job before, and I've been getting tints since I was 14!  The salon itself was super pleasant as well-very high end feeling, in contradiction with the low prices for the services.  The massage table the esthetician worked on was so so comfy, and heated!  Which is just lovely in chilly Bellingham.   I would have loved to stay for a massage.  I would have gotten my haircut here as well if I had had the time. Worse spa I've ever been too. The management sucks! Very unprofessional, they threatened me. They charge you for an hour but don't give an hour massage. Very rude service reps! Crapy nail tech's that won't even fix a smudge before you leave the salon! Food sucks! All around a poor place to go! I would recommend any spa in town over this place! Supposed to be one of the nicest, but they treat you horribly! the only good thing at this spa is their facial-est! The day before my wedding, my bridal party and I went into Zazen to have a spa mani and pedi. While the 'spa' part of it was great, the end result of my fingernails was horrible! I had grown my nails out specifically for my wedding so that I didn't need to get acrylic tips. I had broken one fingernail, so the woman filed down all my nails to match the broken one! Then she asked me if I wanted them round or square for the french manicure...I told her as square as possible. Not only were my fingernails too short to see over my fingertips, she rounded all the edges. Then, she pulled out the white nail polish and started my french tips...the white polish was chunky and looked horrible! She then got up and left the room and let the other 2 girls in there finish my nails. Needless to say, I was appalled, not only at my nails but at the unprofessionalism of their employee. Luckily, I was able to get a late appointment that evening to have acrylics put on. I would not recommend this spa for anything more than the steam room and free beverages. ~Molly Ryan Read Less
