This is going to be a long one ... bare with me. I lived in Newport News about 10 years ago. At that time I was obsessively trying to achieve "the perfect platinum blonde" and no one ever was able to get my hair to lighten correctly. It always ended up yellow, and not a pretty yellow either- like peroxide in the 90's yellow. Anyway, I finally found Bobbie the stylist that changed my (hair's) life about a year later. In ONE session she achieved the color I'd been dying to have for years. I knew I'd never go anywhere else. Fast forward a few years, and I found out I had to move out of state for work. I tried to find stylists/colorists that could do what she does, and no one compares. I now live in Georgia, and drive the 8 hours back to Yorktown so she can work her magic. Can’t say if they do good work or not because they canceled my fiancé’s appointmemt for her makeup on our wedding day, yes her WEDDING DAY!!!!!because she was 10 min late, I understand being late was her fault because she was getting her hair done at another place and had such a tight window to get there for her makeup, but when they told her they cancelled her appointment they didn’t seem to care, but I have to say the place she ended up going to did an outstanding job at a cheaper rate and was very accommodating so I guess this places lack of customer service and caring was a blessing in disguise. After a couple of years searching for "my" stylist in my new location, I can honestly say I have found her!! Thank you Diana! I love my color (highlights and lowlights) and cut/style!! Diana took the time to discuss what I was looking for, what I liked and didn't like when it came to styling my hair, etc and gave me such great advice and detailed instructions on how to do my hair at home. I felt very welcomed by all the staff and it's a very friendly atmosphere. I have been going to Shear Style and Salon for almost six years now and have had my hair highlighted (both cool and warm), colored (blonde to brunette), balayage, fixed from other salons and cut. I have tried about everything with my hair and have seen almost all of the stylists including; Bobbie, Diana, Ivonne (who is one of my favorites :), Scott (the owner who is an amazing stylist and person) and now Kathy (who has an eye for detail). Each stylist has done a wonderful job with my hair and I have never left the salon feeling disappointed. I am always overly impressed with how my hair looks and feels after getting my hair done. If not the stylists, the atmosphere and spaciousness of the salon always makes me feel pampered. After years of going there I have to say that Shear Style and Salon never cut corners they only cut hair :) Read Less

I've been going here 2 years. I'd say I'm happy with it about half the time. Over time the price had gone up for a hair cut. The color sometimes is perfect but more often not because the consultation part doesn't happen if you're a repeat customer. Also the scalp massage gets shorter and shorter. On my most recent and last visit my stylist brought her daughter to the salon. The daughter then proceeded to stop by the chair repeatedly and by the end just sat on the chair at the station next to me. This made me really uncomfortable because I was very unhappy with the much darker color and I felt awkward about expressing with Sam the stylist with the daughter starting at me. This is a great salon. Especially when things go right. And Lauren is a talented stylist. Even when the outcome of the service she provides isn’t what you described. Nor what you wanted. Nor what you thought you would pay for. This was my latest experience with this salon. And this is how things unfolded when I brought the matter to their attention: They were reasonable. They graciously offered me a second appointment. Another chance to come back to get the other half of the treatment they started. A complete service I never intended to obtain. But that appointment never happened. I received a call from my stylist 20 minutes before my scheduled appointment stating she was behind and wouldn’t have the time to do what I want. I very much appreciated this last minute cancellation. For my sake. And I understand they did that for me. And they just wanted to make me happy. So again, they took care of me. They graciously offered yet a third appointment. I could not have been more appreciative. They provided me the opportunity to clear my schedule one more time. To come in and receive and pay full price for the other half of the service I never asked for. But let’s not get hysterical, this is only hair. And maybe a little of my time. And just a small portion of my money. And who doesn’t have three days and $80.00 to squander. I recommend everyone visit Shear Style Salon. You just can’t get service like this anywhere. They are the exception. All the staff here are amazingly sweet and zen like. Because angelic is easy to be when you have no awareness of your error. Are unconcerned with your level of performance. Got a great manicure from Mercedes. She is friendly and did a superb job on my nails. She made sure they were the shape I like (I hate when people just shape them assuming you like square nails. It's such a pet peeve for me) and gave me tips on keeping them healthy. I can't wait to go back! Read Less

The receptionist greeted me right away and was pleasant. I have not been happy with my hair in over 3 years until I got a cut at Shear Style and Salon by Lauren. What a great experience! Was up in Yorktown for only a short time but needed a haircut bad... The last barber shop I went to butchered it. Found this place on yelp and liked the reviews. The owner Scott washed, cut and styled my hair. He did an amazing job! I get a faded faux hawk but too long for clipper and requires serious scissor work and Scott even broke out a guarded straight razor and objects of wizzardry:) Even helped me pick a new matte wax to spike it up with out it looking all wet and stiff like gel. To sum up, really happy with the service and hospitality of Shear Style Salon. Read Less

I've known Bobbie since she worked at bubbles, and I started seeing her immediately after she started working here. She's a great stylist and is never afraid to do something weird with your hair. I have a pixie cut and wanted a Mohawk awhile back and she had no hesitation to cut it. The customer service is also great. If they don't pick up the phone then they'll call you right back. Went to inquire about a massage and facial for my mom and I and the stylist was not helpful. The stylist told me I can take a menu off the desk. When I walked to the desk there were no menus. I have been to this spa twice for massages.  First time was a year ago; second time was last month.  I tried some Groupons in between, but nothing matches these guys.  I was sad to see that Ginger was no longer there but Leah A. made up for that with the best 90 minute Swedish massage in a long time!The spa is well appointed, very clean, modern, and spacious.  It has plenty of "non-car denting" parking, which is a plus for me.  Everyone is friendly and accommodating and they even call sometimes to see if you can come early which is a nice option.I love this place; I only wish they would offer a military discount like some other spas.
