I started going to frizzles about a year-and-a-half ago. Making the transition from highly processed (deep red) hair to all natural(gray)hair is not an easy task. Xanthy and Sami were amazing and brainstorming together and talking me through the process that they were planning. Xanthy took her time and had multiple sessions to make sure the process was done safely and with perfection! We started with a cut and a balayage for more natural look, while growing out. I’ve been in this salon two weeks before for a consultation with Jocelyn . She was super nice with me . We decided to make an appointment to dye my hair in June . I called today to cancel my appointment. The front disk lady was so rude with me . She hanged up the phone twice while I’m talking to her. She was talking to me in hurry with very mean way!!! . The haircut was fine. I felt like she shampoo was rushed and I was shocked when the stylist ripped a giant hairball out of his brush before brushing my hair with it. I regret not stopping him there and leaving. A bad haircut can be fixed but unsanitary cant. —edit in response to the owner/manager I would rather the brush be cleaned and sanitized in accordance with VA law. I waited 5 months because I honestly debated filing a complaint with the state. While looking for a new salon, I saw yours listed and since I never filed a complaint, I decided that a review would be fine. I was called by the manager who left a message complaining about how I waited five months and was never offered an apology over message or phone. High energy, busy-ness, and great music! Fun, modern take on a salon!Back to the main event, the Pretty Woman herself: Julia! I've never had a hairstylist cut and color my hair where I've been truly happy and left completely satisfied. I showed her photos of what I wanted and what I didn't want. She listened, was attentive, and was very helpful with the decision making process. Julia is a great conversationalist, completely down to earth woman with pure talent. Her story of becoming a hairdresser is inspirational- she not only has amazing skills but an incredible amount of courage, uniqueness, as well as passion in what she does. She paid attention to detail the entire time and made sure I was informed as well as comfortable throughout. My girlfriend booked her first appointment with Frizzles well in a week in advance and arrived for her appointment 10 minutes early only to be informed that her hair dresser wasn't there and canceled!  They were not accommodating at all and stated they were booked for the rest of the day. Horrible customer service...as if they were trying to chase customers out of the door.  No offering to squeeze me in, complimentary salon service for the trouble, nothing!  Quick way to lose a customer!  Fuming!!!! I got cut from a junior stylist (I will omit the name to not pick one one particular person). Surely, I would expect a cut better than haircuttery? No, worse. I wanted a shorter softer cut and I got a really bad razor cut. It was not what I expected. I went through HELL. Basically I wore a hat for about 3-6 months! Thank goodness it was winter time when I initially got the cut! Cause it could have been worse. My friends keep asking why I wore a hat all the time, and then I showed them my haircut, I got laughs sometimes. Sometimes a conciliatory "it's not that bad." This haircut took me 1 year to grow out! It was a slow dull pain that wouldn't go away. Thus, I waited about a year to write this review. I really wanted to like this place because of the location but I couldn't do it. I felt like this bad haircut did damage to my emotional well being. If I'm paying $50 dollars for a haircut. Surely a junior stylist can handle it? If not, why is this person a hairstylist. Does going to a junior stylist mean I won't get good haircuts? The stylist told me she cut hair for 7 years!!! 7 years is a junior stylist? Or inconsistent hair cutter?I complained to the manager and he tried to fix it, but there wasn't much left to fix because all my hair was gone! He did not refund me after I asked for a refund ($50 some dollars) but offered me a free cut next time. So I waited a year to grow out my hair. I never used that free cut because I've lost all trust in this establishment. I'm not sure what a senior stylist would get me (my guess is not much better), and I'm not willing to try it, if it means theres a chance I'll have to wait another year for my hair to grow out! Honestly, I do like Frizzles and I love Julia, but lately I have been missing her for appointments because of my schedule. This review is about just one of my experiences which is the most recent one with Xanthy. Xanthy gave me a pretty nice haircut and she was very pleasant. However, the issue occurred when another client came in and I guess Xanthy needed assistance from the woman who shampooed me to start with her next appointment. I get that sometimes we have to juggle our tasks, but I really wish Xanthy would have told me she was going to have someone else finish my blow drying, just out of courtesy. I just felt like I was passed on to someone who really had a hard time with my hair. The woman kept commenting about my hair, like, "You sure have a lot of hair!" as she struggled to work a blow dryer and I could see her struggle all in the face and of course through the tone of her voice as she mumbled, "Jesus" and "Whoo! My arm!" She at one point dropped the blow dryer and got tangled up in it a bit and she kept accidentally switching it off. I didn't say anything just because I really did not want to be that person who stops the whole thing ans embarrasses her, but sheesh. Anyways, it finally ends and she notifies Xanthy and says to her, "You always get the ones with the thick hair!" Really?! There was a short awkward pause after that. Great place! Found the salon (and my go-to stylist, Betty) by chance when I moved to the area 2 years ago and decided to stop dying my own hair. Came in on a whim and then never looked anywhere else! I come in and get my hair dyed and cut every 6-8 weeks and have absolutely no complaints for the entire 2 years now. Everyone is friendly, the salon is clean and comfortable, and there is plenty of parking on the street or in the nearby garage. Highly recommend. Read Less

I've had mixed experiences at this salon and will not be returning. I had a fantastic haircut from a junior stylist earlier this summer. I absolutely loved it! Recently, I went in for my second haircut at frizzles, but the result was unflattering and parts of it were uneven. Even worse, it was done by a master stylist for $80.I know a bad haircut is par for the course once in awhile, but what really turned me off to Frizzles was their (lack of a) response. I emailed them with a photo of my hair and asked what they could do, emphasizing that I trust their studio and know they could help me fix my concerns. Frizzles never responded. I think Frizzles is probably a great place if you have a relationship with one stylist. If you're a walk in, I would advise not going here--they won't value you as a customer. Read Less

I've been going to Ruby for about a year now and she is what dreams are made of. She is bubbly, honest,  thorough and best of all really freaking good at her job. You can't ask for more than that. I know she's known for her fashion color, but for a girl like me who dabbles in regular ol' blonde and light brown, she still kicks ass. I love my hair and even though I haven't been back since my appointment back in maybe July, her hair coloring and cutting techniques has made my new growth blend right in which says A LOT about her considering she can make the blonde in my hair look NATURAL even though she specializes in every color but natural. I feel bad writing a bad review, because I really liked my stylist, Sandy. But the fact is, she did not do I what I asked. She cut my hair so much shorter than I had asked for. I showed her a picture of what I wanted, which was hair that fell between my chin and my shoulders. I said repeatedly, not too short! And when she started cutting, I was noticing it was really short, and I said, please make sure it's not too short! And she said not to worry, that it would look great. But when she finished, it was way shorter than I what I asked for. It's angled, so the front is not too bad, but the back is SOOOO short. When she finished I said, I think the back is way too short, and she said I just needed to get used to it. At that point I figured what could I really do-  you can't fix something that's already too short.Now, if this was what I was asking for, the cut does look cute. But it's not what I wanted. It's much shorter than I've ever had it before. If I were a teenager I would have cried about it, but oh well, hair grows. Read Less

This review is only relevant to my fellow curlies. I usually go to Fiddleheads in DC but I was looking for something closer to home. Big mistake. I called to make an appointment with Ruby after seeing so many great reviews about her experience with curls. Unfortunately she was away for a few weeks. The receptionist offered that Betty is also great with curls and I believed her. It's obvious that Betty does not know how to cut curly hair. Be wary of recommendations from people whose job it is to book or sell things. I could tell immediately that this was going to be bad and I should have left. I was taken straight to the back to have my hair washed... without a consultation or even a glance from the stylist. That is insane. How can you cut someone's hair if you don't know what it looks like or how they wear it? I'm also used to Deva cuts, which are done dry and focus on cutting each curl so it lays best. This was a huge red flag. When I did meet Betty she grabbed a hairbrush and ran it straight through my hair. If you have curly hair you are cringing because you don't brush curly hair. It hurt and probably damaged my hair as she raked the brush through my tangles. She then cut my hair as if it were straight by cutting big chunks straight across. She cut my hair pretty darn short because when it dried and curled up it was much higher than what we discussed. Again, her inexperience was showing. She didn't really know how to shape the curls around the face or on top so my hair is basically a big triangle right now. I'm really upset by this and will be wearing my hair back until it's grown out enough to get a proper cut at Fiddleheads again. The final nail in the coffin is that she put only a pea-sized amount of hair lotion --not made specially for curls-- in my hair so I had to leave the salon with a huge puff of frizz. Went in for a balayage and a trim. I have naturally dark brown hair, but have been blonde in the past. Wanted to get my hair to a point where I could try out a rose gold balayage but know that it may take a few visits to get there. However, the stylist took me from dark brown/faded colour to icy blonde in one sitting. Completely over processed my hair and then proceeded to brush it out and blow dry it for 25 minutes. I have curly hair, my hair is completely ruined now. ... Wanted to get my layers back in my hair so that my curls/waves sat nicely. My hair was one length in the back. So not only was my hair ruined, I also didn't get the haircut that I asked for. I spent a ridiculous amount of money to have to shell out even more money to try and fix it (between deep conditioners and paying for Olaplex and an actual haircut at another salon). I've had plenty of bad haircuts in the area (with a high price tag) and honestly wasn't expecting much with the price tag of Frizzles. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I met my stylist, Sandy. Very friendly and did an amazing job freshening up my bob!!  I explained exactly what I wanted (which doesn't seem to matter to a lot of stylists) and Sandy nailed it!! 5 stars for customer service, cut, overall experience, and mostly importantly, price! Just ok. I got a haircut and hair color with Ruby. The cut was excellent but the hair color was subpar. I returned to the salon to correct the coloring mistake ( uneven toning) but wasn't completely satisfied. After numerous "eh, it's ok" comments from friends and family I bought a hair color box at cvs and recolored my hair at home. Prior to this visit I had a haircut with Sammy a few months ago and wasn't impressed. Given the overpriced service and mediocre results I'm going to stay away. Read Less

I got a very decent cut with Brad. It wasn't super exciting, I felt like he was maybe playing it safe, and it's grown out faster than I would like. That said, it looked pretty good. If I could give Frizzles a 6th star I would and write Ruby's name on it.  I am new to the area and, despite the fact I hadn't had a haircut in 6 months, Ruby embraced the challenge of my unruly, curly, fine hair and gave me something other than a bob and I'm so excited with results. She didn't make my appointment feel rushed. She gave me advice about styling and caring for my curls. She wasn't pushy about products. And she gave me a style I think I might actually be able to replicate instead of throwing back into a bun... Anyway, I am just so grateful to have squeaked into her very busy schedule. I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. This salon is absolutely amazing! Sammi and Julia did a beautiful job on my dull and somewhat damaged hair. I walked out of the salon feeling beautiful. They applied deep conditioning that my hair thirsted for, including Olaplex. The hair wash alone was worth the cost of admission. Sooo relaxing! Having visited a number of salons in the DC metro to try to get my hair back in shape after it was severely damaged at another salon in Alexandria, I can say that their prices are quite reasonable.  I am a huge fan of the round brush technique for drying hair and Julia is an amazing expert at it. No smoking flat irons and other damaging heat instruments to give me beautiful body and shine.  and Sammi...A phenomenal expert at his craft and a wonderful soul. My color is perfect. Desperately needed a hair trim so tried this place out on a whim. The salon was pretty busy - good sign! Inside it looked clean with modern fixtures, but there was also a sense of coziness. Went to Frizzles on a whim today realizing how badly I needed a haircut. I called and they were able to fit me in right away. I got the luck of having Brad as my stylist. He was super fun to chat with, gave a great scalp massage during my shampoo and had me completely relaxed after a long stressful week at work. BEST HAIRCUT IVE EVER HAD! I never have high expectations going to a salon since I never quite seem to get the cut I'm looking for. This is an amazing place. It's taken me a long time to find a hair salon. I came in without an appointment and they seen me right away. All the ladies and men were so sweet. Love this place! Sami, one of the partners of the salon, is amazing at what he does! He has a true passion for hair and it shows in his work. The entire staff are all very nice and you can tell they truly love where they work and what they do. The interior is so cute and modern and very clean. They have an assistant constantly cleaning and sweeping the areas and she does a very great job at it to make sure the salon is well kept. The location is also in a really cute part of old town Alexandria, in one of the newer areas. newer part of Old Town Alexandria. So easy to find and unlike the rest of Old Town, it was very easy to find parking. Sami did a balayage turn into ombre for me and he made sure to ask me what exactly I wanted, how I wanted it, just to ensure that I would leave a happy camper. And I must say I did! I love the outcome of it and would highly recommend anyone to visit him or anyone in this salon for their hair needs. Ruby is what my hair dreamed of. I went there for s color correction. I had residue from my transformation from deep black to my natural blinding/light brownish/tons of gray hair. The colored bits had a lot of orange left in them. After Ruby did her magic, I was rocking beautiful blonde locks with a lot of color dimension and no orange. I literally had a few people stopping me on the street to tell me my hair looks pretty. The best past is that her technique allowed the roots to look good even right before I went back to her for a touch up (3 months). The best part is that my hair is healthy and she managed to keep the length (mid back). I love her magical hands!!! Read Less

After three years of great cuts and color at frizzles I learned today of a new policy that they do not do kids cuts on the weekends. This is the most absurd policy that I've ever heard of considering people work during the week and haircuts especially for children are best done on the weekends for your clients. Ruby is a gem!! I made the mistake of visiting another salon a mere few weeks before my wedding to have my beautiful summer ombre (done by Ruby) colored back to my natural hair hair color, which is a medium reddish brown. I ended up with almost BLACK hair with BURGUNDY highlights!! It was truly a nightmare, especially before such a big event. After reading how difficult it is to get this type of dye out of hair, I quickly booked an appointment with Ruby for a few days later at Frizzles (thank goodness).The most I was expecting was to have my hair return to a color that grows out of a human head, because I know how difficult it is to do color-corrects on dark red hair. However, Ruby went above and beyond and was able to give me a GORGEOUS medium-brown chocolate hair color with just a touch of natural-looking redness. I am SO happy with it, it is the exact color I was hoping for. She did this without any bleach or harsh chemicals! My hair still feels soft and looks healthy. Her assistant, Alexis, is also fantastic - she is very sweet and gives great head massages while shampooing.Tip: If you want to schedule an appointment with her, plan ahead. I had a cut and color (balayage) with Joy! She was great and I definitely recommend booking an appointment with her. When I first arrive she consulted with me before starting anything. We discussed the length and she showed me where she would cut. For the color/balayage, I had a few photos for ideas. She matched my hair perfectly to what I showed her.
