Salon is spacious and good temperature. I loved the aural light! The women at the front desk were kind. Samantha (curl specialist) was super thorough with our consultation. As soon as I saw her bouncy, blonde ringlets I felt like I was at home with someone like me! She was warm, yet focused and studious of the chaotic, neglected straw collection that is my hair! Well, I truly tried to like this place. I really hoped I would. Everyone is delightful and very friendly, the space is in a great location, and it has a very cool vibe. Unfortunately, the results were just not there. Now, it would be easy to criticize after one visit. Instead, I hung in there for a second visit. I gave it two haircuts over 4-5 weeks. Neither one was what I wanted. I will say, the first was at least in the ballpark and I figured after it grew out a bit and having the same stylist again, maybe a connection would be made. Unfortunately, this one was simply awful! I wear a classic, men's tailored haircut. A simple concept; tapered short on the sides and back, longer on the top (3-4 inches), parted at the side. I thought this time we could advance and get closer to what I wanted. Instead of a taper, the sides and back were clippered all the way to the top, one length. That is by no means tapered. I typically ask for scissor over comb to do the sides and back, here I got either a lot of thinning shear or clippers. Neither produced a good result. I wanted no loss of length on the top, just a bit of texturing. Instead, lots of thinning, no point cutting and now I have a bit of a weight line on the sides and no blend. The crown was butchered, way too short and may be weeks before it will lay down again. Not to mention the pronounced break in the back that looks like something I would have expected from Super-Cuts. I can understand not every stylist may have the skills for certain things. In that case, I recommend passing on the experimentation and forwarding on the client to someone that can do justice to what they want. Again, lovely people (including my stylist here who is so very nice), but the results were what I would expect from a $10 chop shop. It is so incredibly hard to find someone that can do a good men's haircut in this city. The quest continues to find someone that understands that there is something between a buzz cut and some silly, ultra trendy looks. When did "classic" become outdated? Two months ago my hair was well below my shoulders and relatively blonde. I had never colored it before. One day, while downtown, I decided to check out Alter Ego for a brow wax and maybe a consultation. I was introduced to Meghann Holland who greeted me with sincerity and professionalism. I was curious about a drastic cut and color, I told her. She made room in her schedule to consult me after the brow wax. I decided to go for it: a chin length, textured cut and a nearly chocolate color. Upon arriving for my cut and color (about a week after the initial consultation), I unloaded about five different pictures on Meghann. Each was a different beast entirely, but I wanted some sort of hybrid haircut. Meghann listened intently, worked with me on what it would take to execute the ideal cut, and even taped the pictures up at her work station for reference. She knew I was nervous about both the cut and the color. But she has a special, exceptional quality lacking in most stylists. She truly works to bridge the gap between her client's ideal style and her own interpretation of pictures or vague descriptions. Meghann worked with precision, patience, and creativity. The end result was exactly what I was looking for. Not a day went by since that first cut without compliments, from those who know me or complete strangers. The cut grew out and it was time for a trim and color. I, of course, went back to Meghann. This time I wanted to go for a darker brown, and to shorten the cut in the back and bang areas. No pictures needed, I explained what I was going for and she nailed it. I probably received 10 or more compliments from strangers today. Such as: ""I love your hair! My girlfriend had the WORST salon experience ever at Alter Ego Raleigh!!! Not only do they lack coloring skills but she had never been treated so rudely by a salon manager, Stephen Ridolfi, and owner Dana Hunter or by any business for that matter. She wanted strawberry blonde hair blonde highlights and brought a picture of how she wanted to look. The stylist consulted with the manager, Stephen Ridolfi, and he explained what she should do. After processing, it came out a dark, dark brown with no highlights. Stephen was very condescending and told her that after a few washes it would be the color she wanted. She wasn't pleased and wasn't leaving until it was right. He then instructed Hannah again on how to fix the color, but was extremely rude to me the entire time. She asked me lots of questions before she started to make sure she knew exactly what I was looking for, and even offered up friendly suggestions, and explained her reasoning behind the suggestions. I have very thick hair and it can be a lot to deal with and it makes me nervous to have others work on it. She handled it with care and did an amazing job. I have difficult hair to work with, so I'm always hesitant to try a new salon or stylist...however, seeing as I am new to the area - I had to go somewhere. I absolutely lucked into Alter Ego - and could not be more thrilled with the results. I was fortunate enough to get a Saturday morning appointment with Dana, the same week I called. While the salon was busy with several bridal parties, Dana began my appointment on time. She took several minutes to listen and consult with me about what I was looking for and discuss her plan. She was completely thorough and took her time with the cut - it is a noticeable difference. Dana did an amazing job. Honestly, this is the best hair cut I've ever had. My hair falls perfectly every time I style it - no matter if I wear it naturally curly, just blow drow or if I take the time to straighten it. I no longer have ""bad hair"" days or have to hid under a ponytail. Everyone in the salon was extremely friendly, and every guest was smiling and having a great time. I have not had any issues with the online reservation system. I received an email confirming my appointment immediately after booking - and a reminder email a few days before. I wanted a new cut at a reputable salon, so I did some searching online and Alter Ego was the first on the list and after reading some great reviews I decided to book an appointment. They asked me what sort of hair I had and I said that I had rather long hair so they suggested Trevor as my stylist. I have never gone to a hair salon more than once because I never felt like it was worth my money. I would tell my stylist what my hair does naturally and I wanted a cut that complimented my naturally wavy thick hair, but I was always given a hair cut that only looked good if I straightened it. When I sat down in Trevor?s chair I told him what I wanted and he really listened to what I was saying and took the time to understand what I wanted. I never felt rushed or like my opinion on my hair was invalid. I have not gone to any other salon since my first cut with Trevor, nor do I plan to. I was finally able to convince myself to cut my long curly hair super short, and all I needed was a salon. I did some research, and happened upon Alter Ego. The reviews were great, and I was impressed by the experience that all their stylists have. I decided to book an appointment with them, and the receptionist that I spoke to was nothing but friendly and helpful. When I came in for my appointment, I was pretty much immediately asked if I cared for anything to drink. I was seated in the waiting area, and after a few minutes Dana walked over and took me to her chair. I'd brought in pictures of exactly the cut that I wanted, and she was very good at figuring out what was done in that cut.
