Love this place when I am traveling on RT 85 and need dinner and a sunset. Excellent meaty BarBQ sandwich with slaw,. Regular fries with mire fries in the overflow wrap and a regular soft drink - all for $6.99. And the inside is decorated with nostalgic movie photos. Will never get anymore of my money. First I waited 15 minutes in the drive thru for two bbq sandwich combos got home and the sandwiches were soggy and just fell apart like a bbq soup. I called the store to see if I could return them the manager hung the phone up on me with my temper I decided not to go up there and called and emailed Smithfield directly never heard anything guess they could care less about customer satisfaction and the quality of their food. I have been to this place a few times. I love the pulled BBQ sandwiches here and travel about 30 miles from VA just to get them! At first I thought the lady at the window was super rude but it turns out she's like that all the time! She never has any facial expression or personality. It would be nice to get a warm greeting every now and then but oh well I don't even expect any different now. Other than that, the fries, hushpuppies and banana pudding are pretty decent too. Great food, great atmosphere, ok service. As I approached, I told the cashier that it was my first visit. She gave me an uncomfortable look. The menu lacked clarity so I began to ask questions. I actually considered the old "nevermind" and leave. I'm glad I stayed. Even though she was my first impression (not very good), the food has left an even larger, deeper impression (Great!!!). I can't wait to find another location. I had the chicken platter with beans and fries. We were driving through town from Virginia to Raleigh and stopped here. We all loved it. There were 4  of us. I had the combo platter dark which they don't tell you via the menu, or happens to to be fried chicken with pulled chicken and a couple of sides. This place is terrible! We stopped here for dinner while traveling down 85S from PA to Georgia. We always try to find somewhere more local instead of opting for the more traditional chain restaurants. We had never heard of Smithfield's and figured it was either a stand alone location or something unique to North Carolina, so we thought we would try it. While we were standing in line looking at the menu, I asked one of the local people what people usually order and what the best thing to get was. He said "fried chicken." Since, I saw that they actually sold their batter mix and sold the tea, I thought I could not go wrong. I ordered the dark meat platter with brunswick stew and potato salad with an unsweet tea. My husband ordered the large shrimp and bbq platter with a sweet tea. Both of us were hugely disappointed.The chicken was greasier than I have ever seen fried chicken be in my almost 40 years as a southerner.... and that is saying something. I grew up in Tennessee and live in Georgia (the land of Crisco and butter)...and I have never had chicken this greasy. The batter was not bad but the grease had soaked so deeply into the chicken that it was inedible.The brunswick stew was the nastiest slop I have ever tried. It literally looked and tasted like something I would feed the hogs. I would have liked to have a little more potato with my pickle, egg, and mayo in that potato salad which also tasted old and funky. My husband's shrimp were like mini cocktail shrimp that had been battered and fried. He said it was ok but not worth eating. He said the bbq was edible but that it was not that good. The tea tasted old and bitter like it has been sitting out for a long time or like they had reused the bag for both the unsweet and the sweet tea. Needless to say, I would never eat here again. Saw the billboard on I-85 and stopped in to avoid a thunderstorm. Place was well lighted which is a good sign for a traveler unfamiliar with the area. I ordered a chicken platter (included choice of sides and a drink...I went for hush puppies and Brunswick stew. The platter is priced @ $8.95 including a soft drink. My order came pretty quickly. The Brunswick Stew was tasty and stuffed with corn, green beans and meat. While nothing unusual in terms of flavor the chicken appeared to be freshly made which was a nice touch. Hush puppies were bland but warm.A couple of items: * I didn't quite get the Rat Pack decor (was Sinatra big fried chicken fan? Maybe so.) but the music was fun.* When eating in the restaurant I would have preferred not being served with plastic plate, foam plastic soup bowl and one plastic spoon. That's OK for take out but when sitting in the restaurant I'd hope for a bit more. * My table appeared clean but once seated I found it to be quite sticky. The men's  room was messy and smelled like a cheap limousine after prom night... I'll spare any additional details* Maybe I looked suspicious but I couldn't generate a smile from any of the three employees I encountered. I shouldn't feel bad as other customers didn't fare any better.All in all this was a disappointing stop. While the food merits a "3" rating, the cleanliness and sour staff dropped this place to an overall "2" for me. There are better options, I'm sure. Read Less

Made a pit stop at this Smithfield's on my way to Richmond.  It was dinner time on a Friday night and there was a pretty good crowd but no wait for me to order.  The woman who took my order didn't seem particularly happy to see me, answer my questions, or take my order.  Not a great start.I ordered the BBQ plate with potato salad.  It also came with cole slaw and hushpuppies.  For me, the bbq lacked that smoked flavor.  There was a hint of heat from the red pepper flakes and a vinegar-based sauce.  Just bland.  Speaking of bland, the hushpuppies were terribly boring.  The potato salad was fine.If I come back, I'll try the chicken but with all of the options at this exit, I'm not sure I'll come back. Great BBQ if you're into NC style. Since people's taste in BBQ is so varied, I can say that you should know what you're getting into. If you are into it, this is a great BBQ joint. I'm a fan of Carolina style (or eastern style as it's called in NC)  pork so decided to stop here.  First,  the hush puppies they bring out were excellent. I ordered the pulled pork plate but the waitress brought a sample of the "chopped" pork,  which is cooked in the usual vinegar and pepper flakes. The normal pulled pork is plain,  which is probably what the guy here complained about being tasteless. I changed to that and was very happy! Order the chopped pork plate instead,  that's what you want. A side of slaw goes well on pulled pork and the baked beans were among the best I've had.  Chunks of ground beef and I think jalepino peppers in them. I never thought I'd say this but yelp failed me. Maybe it's because I'm not from the area but seriously? This is a poor excuse for what looks like a chain. Raving about their barbecue. First of all you walk in and there is an archaic board of "" menu options which basically consist of chicken or bbq. Not knowing what either were, through a series of probing questions we managed to place an order for a chunk of fried chicken, and a plate of chicken and bbq combo. The bbq was a mush of grossly colored and even worse tasting what looked like it attempted to be pulled pork. Very good BBQ place. This is the first Smithfield's I've ever been to and I was so pleased! The food was great. Even though I'm not the hugest North Carolina barbecue fan, this was exceptional! The sweet tea was DEFINITELY southern; very sweet and not for the faint of heart. The most impressive part about it was the staff. They were absolutely incredible! So friendly, so helpful! I really like Smithfield's, to the point I had been hunting one down on my trip back from DCC because I was craving some Brunswick stew. But this one disappointed me. I placed my order for two pints of stew for takeout at the front, then went to use the restroom while I waited. The bathroom itself could have been cleaner. The stalls were messy and the sink was water logged. When I returned to the counter, I saw my pints of stew on the kitchen counter ready to be packaged. I knew they were mine because I was the only one waiting for food. I stood and waited, and waited, and waited. It was easily 5 minutes I watched the cashier mill about and walk past the food before finally stopping to put a lid on it. I noticed stew running down the side of one container and he wiped the container on his apron. Personally, I found it a bit unsanitary. I only imagine aprons are where they wipe their hands too. I would have rather him used a napkin or towel. But I don't plan on licking the outside of the container, so I let it slide.He handed me the bag and didn't offer me any condiments, so I asked. I walked out to my car and my husband just about drove off the lot before realizing I had no spoon. We had to stop and go back so I could get one. Major fail to hand someone a takeout order of stew without utensils! Another issue- please smile! The employees had no personality. They weren't rude but they lacked friendliness. It was like I was bothering them.I will say, that stew was yummy. And it was really hot, so I wondered if the guy waited to put a lid on it because of the heat. I truly enjoyed the atmosphere and customer service was outstanding!! After placing your order they bring the completed order to your table. My order was ready even before I left the counter which was also impressive. The sink in the dining area is a great touch for people like myself that like to wash their hands before eating and don't always like going into the bathroom to do so. I like that Yelp describes 3 stars as A-OK. That's just what Smithfield's was. Killer service for fast casual- almost like a step up. They bring your food to you in the dining room after ordering at a counter and then at this one came around offering drink refills table side- nice touch. Pretty amazing baked beans here- not for the dieting though. Narry a salad or non-friend site!I was surprised how affordable the pricing was here.
