Went here for the first time last week for a cut and color upon the recommendation of a few friends that go here regularly. I requested Judy and am so glad I did. She did exactly what I asked but with her expert hand/eye. I wanted a subtle balayage that's low maintenance and it's exactly what I got. I had my first visit today after finding this salon online winning multiple years on Best of Bergen Mag.  Definitely impressed.  The salon is modern, spacious, and impeccably clean.  I called this morning and they were able to fit me in.  I was lucky to get an Artist/Educator level stylist, who happened to have a cancelation, so timing worked out perfectly.  As a first time customer, I began with a consult, gave her details to my hair texture, problems, things l like/dont like, and showed her a pic of what I hoped to achieve.  She was extremely knowledgeable and offered suggestions that would work best for my hair to get the look that I wanted.  The stylist went above and beyond and I am super excited with my cut and style!!  Front desk upon arrival was extremely cordial: takes your coat, offers coffee/tea, etc. Customer service is A+++ I already scheduled an appointment in the spring for highlights and a cut.  Looking forward to returning.  Highly recommend!! Really disappointed with what I got for $64 haircut. My stylist was really nice, really experienced, and definitely contributed her suggestions and opinion. Leaving the salon, I was really excited about my cut as she added curls and tons of product. After showering and doing my own hair, I realized it was a really boring cut and such a waste of money. I was looking for a salon that would color my hair and give me a new cut. My colorist was amazing! He was knowledgeable and informative. I requested a master stylist/cutter to cut my hair. I wanted someone that could really give me the change I was looking for.  I didn't get it. I should have requested for a junior or trainee.... even she or he could cut hair straight and would definitely be a lot cheaper than a master. I think with a master cutter they must have a vision or opinion about what hair style will fit you and provide that vision with you, the customer. Well, don't expect that. Just see a junior person and you will be just as happy or you won't be disappointed because you get what you pay for. BUT I am going back to the colorist (Alex) to get my hair colored and cut by him. I had the best experience at Hair Mania. I spent the last 1.5 years trying to grow my hair out. Had decided it just wasn't working and scheduled an appointment. Jessica was super sweet, listened, asked questions and understood this was a bit traumatic for me having spent all this time and honestly not everyone can cut short hair but she did an amazing job. I want to give a shoutout to Judy S because even though I can tell she's totally impatient with me (I am the worlds most particular client) she's constantly working at changing my already good color into something else I'm asking her for. I've been to other salons and had horrible experiences with color. Judy has almost consistently done work that exceeds all expectations. If you're looking for balayage go straight to Judy. I see some people complaining about price but really the price is pretty competitive with other higher end salons. You can always find a cheaper service, sure, but you're getting what you pay for. Mania Hair Studio This is truly a "Mania Experience". From the time you enter, you are warmly greeted by Yvette and her Reception Staff who take your coat, offer you light refreshments, and take you to a warmly decorated seating area while you await your Hair Washer. S/he asks about the water temperature and makes sure you are always comfortable. Then it's on to your Stylist - mine being, Angelica, who has styled my hair for a few years now. I must say I receive many compliments which is always nice to hear, especially as a Senior Citizen. Tried to make an appointment here. I live in New York, but went to Mania Hair Studio once 8 years ago for a group wedding prep, so while I was in New Jersey for the week, I figured I'd try it again. I called to make an appt, relaying that I wanted a men's haircut (they did not ask further about what that meant or looked like). I asked them what they charged and they were able to give me a quick appointment. I consulted their pricing online and realized they were charging me for a "women's cut", which is $20 more. I called them back and asked them about this. They told me that their pricing is based on "sex". They also explained that women's hair has "different texture". Now, unless they remember what I look like from 8 years ago, I don't know how they could know the that the texture of my hair is SO unruly that it deemed a $20 tax. I'm going to have to look into local New Jersey laws because here in New York, charging women more for the SAME service as a man is called "gender-based pricing" and is illegal. So, I'll let you know when I learn more about that.Additionally, I'd like to note, that in continuing this practice, MHS is price-gouging short-haired women $120 a year for and every-other-month haircut need. I had a great experience at Mania Hair Studio. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and very clean. The receptionist was very welcoming and offered me coffee as soon as I arrived. Rachel was my stylist and this was my first time there so I was a little nervous. Well, she did an amazing job, not only getting my color perfect, but the hair cut and blow dry was top notch. She also made me feel very comfortable as did Catherine who took care of washing and rinsing my hair. As I was getting ready to get my hair washed a woman sat next to me and we started chatting. It could of been an old friend she was so warm and we talked for about 20 mins. I finally said, who are you, do you work here or are you a customer? She says, "Oh I Cory Mania, the owner. I came here for the first today and I cannot thank Janine enough for her amazing work! I had a glaze done along with a trim to lighten up my layers... I am in LOVE with what she did with my hair! I recently had a pretty bad experience here. I went in for a consult prior to the color/highlight appointment to discuss a better base color bc I thought it was too warm of a color. The stylist discussed a few options which included placing highlights farther apart. I agreed and came back a few days later. She then applied a new base color, which was fine. But then used bleach highlights processed under a hairdryer and  ruined my hair. I had previous color and highlights,  which I told them about. And it's obvious bc I had half an inch of salt and pepper roots. Anybody can make a mistake. I get that, but the stylist just wanted to condition my hair when I went back to discuss the damage . It was falling off in chunks, and felt like velcro precisely where the highlights were placed. She questioned me to see if I was mistaking chunks of hair with strands of hair, and then told me not to brush my hair much. The manager later called to tell me that she understood I was unhappy with my hair, but that my hair was already compromised before the processing. However, they already knew I had previous color and highlights. If my hair was unable to tolerate highlights, they should have said so, or at least do a patch test. I was relying on them for their knowledge and judgement. But using a heated hairdryer to process bleach highlights was their mistake and I trusted them to know better. They eventually gave me most of my money back, minus the tip. I had to get my hair cut off. And I do understand that mistakes happen, but not taking responsibility and badgering customers into believing it's their fault for a bad hair experience is no way to build clientele. Read Less

Terrible experience!! I got a single process that left my scalp burning and itching.  The color is flat and the roots are a lighter color.  The next day it is still itching and my hair feels dry!   The "manager" said she would call me to make sure I was ok and never did!!  Unprofessional!! I'm shocked that this place doesn't have four or five stars.  I had a great experience there!  It's a gorgeous, spa-like salon.  The employees are very sweet and super hospitable--both owners came out to introduce themselves to me on my first visit.  Impressive!  The employees at reception are great too, making and changing appointments is a breeze and they even sent me with a sample of a hair cream we chatted about.  The salon also exclusively uses bumble and bumble products--a nice bonus (and it makes the whole place smell so good). They use a tiered pricing system so there are stylists available for any budget.  I had my hair cut by Jackie, who was the best stylist I've had in ages!  She really listened to what I wanted and worked with my natural texture (2a/2b wavy curls) to give me a great cut!  She also showed me how to use a diffuser and how to tame the baby hairs around my face!  Life changing.  Even though she was a higher tier person I thought the price was reasonable, especially considering the experience felt so luxurious.I would definitely recommend coming here!PS: be advised they do not take Amex. I always love my color with Judy and the staff is always friendly and knows my name. Today's service, however went above and beyond. I had my hair colored with someone else (Judy wasn't there) and the woman who pulled my color through and washed my hair forgot to clean the dye that had gotten in my ears. Unfortunately I discovered this when I was already at home. When I called Manias to ask what I could use at home to remove the dye, the manager got on the phone and asked if she could come to my house and bring me the dye remover solution. Staff is trendy and trained at the Bumble and Bumble salon in NYC, they also use Bumble and Bumble products which I love! I travel from the city just to come here, which says a lot. I'm honestly so surprised to read negative reviews for Mania's. I've never had anything less than a stellar experience with Jessica N., who has been cutting and styling my hair for the past three years. The salon itself is gorgeous, and they use all Bumble & Bumble products, which I'm a huge fan of. The stylists explain to you exactly which products they're using, and giving you a sheet with all of the information on what they used, if you want to buy the same products to use at home. Every staff member is incredibly professional, from the front desk to the stylists, and I've never seen anyone look anything less than impeccably presented. My very first visit to the salon, after returning to NJ after living in Pennsylvania for four years, I was greeted by the owner, and was given a gift bag to thank me for being a new customer (with samples of Bumble products). The prices are phenomenal for what you get - $56 for a haircut with a mentor level stylist is incredible. With tip, you're still walking out for under $100, which is a steal in this area, especially for the quality of services and how fantastic your blow dry will look (and hold up!). I've never been disappointed with Jessica, and find her extremely personable and talented. When I say I only want my ends trimmed and a little length taken off, she listens and makes sure I'm comfortable with what she plans to cut before going for it - so again, I'm surprised by people who say that the staff doesn't take client feedback and does what they want. I've never had that experience there. Don't try to park on the street, there's a lot in the back, and a back entrance. You can book your appointments online (sign up for their emails!) and you'll get emails back to confirm your appointment, or have you set up something else. Great salon, I'm glad I decided to go despite the bad reviews. It doesn't really look like a salon like a few other people mentioned, but the inside is beautiful and very stylish. I had a bad experience about a year ago with another salon in the area so I was skeptical about trying another new place instead of going back home to my usual stylist but again, very pleased! I had my hair cut my Nicole who listened to what I wanted and didn't cut off more than I asked (which is a big pet peeve of mine). I had alot of split ends and my hair wasn't in the best shape but she found a way to layer it enough to get most of the dead ends off and keep the length I wanted. My hair is now smooth and easy to brush again! Afterwards the manager gave me a tour of the salon which also included a waxing area, and a room to get your nails done. Then she proceeded to give me some small samples of the shampoo, conditioner, and styling oil to bring home! It was nice to be able to see how the products worked at home since I'm obviously not at great at styling my hair as Nicole is. This salon is a bit pricey, $65 for a cut but well worth it if you're picky or have difficult hair. I will definitely be going back! Read Less

I love! I go to one of the stylists there and she completely saved my hair last time from a bad ombre I got at another salon. She glazed it and gave it a new cut and made my hair look great again. Just got a trim and blow out again and the cut and staff was friendly and wonderful :) Gives out free samples of the products they use at the end of your appointment and are always helpful when trying to figure out what to do with your hair. It's funny how all of the five star reviews are filtered, leaving the people who have had a bad experience; not sure what Yelp is playing at.Anyway, there will always be mixed reviews about salons because it depends how you perceive the outcome of your hair- you either like it or you don't. That being said, my personal experience at Mania is a positive one. I've been here multiple times over the last couple of years to get cut and color by Judy. I am a blonde and she does what I want done to my hair, simple as that and I am always satisfied with the beautiful result color.Things can get really pricey as they add up, but what can you say for a good salon in Bergen County? HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE EXPERIENCEAfter being a loyal customer for several years, i made an appointment to have a trial run for an up do for my wedding day. They never called to confirm my appointment, but when i was 5 minutes late they turned me away, the 60 year old at the front desk kept sticking her lip out like Michelle from "Full House".  Glad that it wasnt my wedding day, they obviously cannot be trusted and are too important to work with a client running 5 min late. this was the last straw, they've cancelled dozens of appointments on me. I came to this place looking for a change as I have been with my stylist/colorist for many years. The person that did my hair suggested to go lighter on my hair color which was fine for a change, the cut was just so so. I really wanted to give them a chance, today I came back for a touch, my colorist only saw me ones, that was when she put the color in my hair, did not see her after that, she doesn't even have a clue how my color turned out. The blow out was a freaking big joke, I really could have done a better job myself, she practically just blew dry my hair, talk about a bad hair day. This was the worst! Started going here after I switched jobs. Hard to find a decent place up here on the border of NY. The salon is very deceiving from the street. It looks kind of like a house. Once you get inside, it is very modern. Everything is clean and new.The woman who cuts my hair does a pretty good job. I am not a big talker while I get my hair cut and I think she has caught on. I've got to say, the best part of a haircut for me is the hair washing part. A little scalp massage goes a long way.This place is a little pricier (28$ for a mens cut) than I would probably like, but it'll do.Street parking is a pain, park in the lot in the back. Also water and bagels while you wait is great. They also take apointments online. They also take credit cards and you can over pay on your card and get cash back to tip. That is a key feature for me. I've tried Mania's a few times over the years, trying different people in hopes that someone would blow me away. I wanted to like them b/c I live nearby, their prices are reasonable and they have decent hours. However, I've always left underwhelmed, and this final time was no different. I gave them a shot b/c my normal stylist was on vacation for two weeks and my ends were in poor shape. I figured a clean inch or two off would be something they could manage...I was wrong.I sprung for the "mentor" level haircut for about $56, the girl was friendly albeit she looked unkempt (which is rare for a hairstylist). I came equipped with many pictures and was very specific in my desired outcome. The 45 minute appointment was borderline torturous as she did nothing but talk about herself and her personal gripes/troubles/unrealized dreams - I felt like i was being held hostage in that chair. Not once did she bother to get to know me or ask me a single question...I felt like a bartender while she unloaded.The situation went from bad to worse when I saw her adding a TON of long layers to my straight bra-length hair (similar to Kristin Davis's hair).  I made it 110% clear that I was desperately trying to grow out my old layers and did not want them touched since my hair grows so slowly.When I left, she had lobbed off about 4 inches, and shaped it into a box instead of long and flowing like I came in with. The worst part was that she added the layers all over and the faceframe, leaving me with "The Rachel" haircut from Friends circa 1992. To top it off, she gave me the laziest, half-assed blowout I've ever seen.  She used a crappy old brush that was too small for a blowout and missing many bristles. She left my hair damp in many areas and with millions of flyaways - as soon as I walked outside into the summer heat, it immediately frizzed up, as anticipated. Immediately it went into a ponytail.It gets worse...I had just recently had my hair colored (and told her this) and the shampoo that she used (probably clarifying) basically stripped most of the color and I'm now left with a red tinge I can't get rid of on my brown hair...I am extremely unhappy and have worn my hair in a ponytail every day since my cut. My normal stylist is one year out of beauty school and does a better cut than Mania's "mentor" level. Mania's needs to find some new "talent" because if she's their 'mentor," they're in trouble.Horrible experience...again. Lesson learned. Read Less

I used to be a regular customer at Mania's.  While the salon itself is beautiful I never felt comfortable or welcome there.  The staff seems a little snobby and a little catty.  I always felt like I was being judged.  That sounds slightly paranoid, but I swear those were the vibes I got. Anyway, I was only ever impressed with a couple of haircuts I got there. I think those might have been flukes.  No lie, one day I had that Carol Brady, mushroom-cut over a flip look going on when I walked out the door.  How you say...LE NOT SEXY. They can cut hair, but there isn't anything fabulous about this place.  I don't know about you, but food can get away with being 3-Star A-OK.  Drinks can be 3-star A-OK.  I need a place f*cking around with my hair to be 5-Star Woohoo!
