I’m not sure why so many negative reviews. I walked in today with no appointment for a mani- pedi, was greeted right away. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. There wasn’t a wait either. I wasn’t rushed to pick a color and sometimes I can take forever lol. The wall of polishes is the most organized I’ve ever seen in a nail salon! The pedicurist took her time and did an excellent job (I’m super picky btw) and then I went for my manicure. Can’t remember who my tech was (Monica maybe?) but she gave the BEST hand massage I’ve ever received. Pricing wasn’t bad at all for a downtown salon. Will definitely be going back! 💅🏼🤩 Read Less

Worst place ever! Went for underarms waxing, she did it in less than 3 min, job was terrible! Still hair left! Did not even bother to do a proper job! I can t even imagine how they do nails! My 8 year old neice was visiting from out of town and I wanted to try this spot out since my usual place was booked. If I could judge the staff separately, they did a pretty good job. However, the owner, who was the first person to greet us, made the overall experience very uncomfortable and almost dampened our mood. The place was fairly empty yet she was rushing us to pick a color as soon as we arrived. Next she stood in front of us micro-managing how many colors we tried on and insisted that I only try a speck and not the whole nail. She kept hovering over us through out the appointment. To add insult to injury, she charged extra because I picked a different color for one nail. No design - just a different color on my ring finger. In addition to the $37 for the mani-pedi which was very superficial, she charged an extra $15 to remove callus. I don't mind paying extra for good service but this experience was awful. Terrible terrible people. I went in for a pedicure. Just hanging out reading my phone in the pedi chair. The woman is done and has drained the foot tub. The owner comes by asked asks me if I want callous scrub. I say, sure, why not? I'm there to pamper myself. She speaks to the girl they look at each other and the girl working looks at me a bit confused. The girl gets the scrubber tool and does it, but doesn't set up again or fill the bath. It was a quick scrub with one of those tools you find at the market. For $5 extra. I felt like she took advantage of me to squeeze out $5. Then I pay with a gift card, and I have a $5 credit. She explains something that it's now a $1 credit. I handed her the gift card back and said it didn't matter, I won't be back. Nitpicking over $4? Sneaking in a half-a**ed treatment for $5? Does she even realize that if I had a $5 balance I'd be more likely to return? Only caring about dollars and cents and not customer service. The nails were just ok. Like what. Could do at home. Nails weren't horrible, but for the price, they were. It was so expensive, I feel like nail places in this area raise prices for gel sets and acrylics because this place was charging 130$ for a full set.....The worst part had to be the lady doing my nails talking about me in SPANISH. Poor customer service from owner  / sub par pedicureservice: The pedicure itself was below average - the scrub hurt a lot and the pedicure was not great, and barely got  a foot massage.  the girl (Monica?) was nice enough and it was obvious she was rushing because the was owner barking orders at everyone. And agree with other reviews, price was high for just a pedicure (28), especially a rushed and below average one. i went at 4pm on a monday, it was not busy. customer service:  After my pedicure dried, I asked the owner, who was sitting at the front desk, where my shoes were. she didnt respond verbally but just pointed all the way down the hall.  In most salons, someone always brings your shoes, esp if they move them away from you.  on this visit, i was 9 months pregnant and huge -, it was apparent to everyone that i was not super mobile.  so you'd think that she would bring them to me, esp since she was just sitting there/ not busy but she didnt.  Ok, that is fine - my husband got them. But I had that white tissue between my toes, and I, being super preggo, could not bend over to take it off, so my husband politely asked her (the owner) for help. She was like "just take it off," rudely. Again, usually the techs do this for you (and also help you put on your shoes), and here, clearly, I couldn't and my husband was nervous about doing it and messing up the polish. She reluctantly came over (had to walk 3-4 steps) and tore off the tissue hastily, off one foot only, and then left. Did not help with the other foot and did not help putting on my sandals, which every other place i've gone to has, especially since I have been preggo. and again, note, i was not there at a busy time.  Then when I paid she did not say a word or acknowledge me.  My husband RARELY thinks anyone is rude and even he was like "what was her problem?"There are so many options in JC for a good mani/pedi - my advice: go somewhere else. what was supposed to be  a treat and relaxing was annoying and expensive. My experience here today was awful. I don't mind paying for good service , but I feel like I was ripped off. I had a regular pedicure which honestly wasn't good at all but I didn't say anything.The entire pedicure felt very rushed but I'm not one to complain and say something, especially when someone is providing a service for me. When I went to check out, I was somehow charged an extra $15.00 to remove a little bit of old gel on my toes. When I asked why , she said "It's a lot of work and that's the price." A lot of work ? I have been seeing John for over 15 yrs now. There was a time I tried out numerous different spa's trying to find the same caliber of work nearer to my home. I never found anyone as good as John, and now I happily drive the 20 min to see him! His wife also does a Beautiful manicure and pedicure. This is not a salon that employs a lot of people to churn out quantity and speed. They focus on quality! I always make my appointment beforehand and never wait more then 10 min, if that. Updated price list for a regular manicure is $12.Biggest pros is that because the salon is new, the nail polish is new and will of course stay on longer. No cons per se but I didn't feel particularly welcomed or even really acknowledged. The nail technician did my nails well, better than some other places I know of, but I got a sense that she was a bit rushed despite not that many people being there right before lunch.I'll come back here if I'm not in my favorite city place in the city. I've been to J Nail dozens of times in the past year as a resident of Jersey City. The salon is very clean & bright, has a great selection of colors (both regular and gel) and is in a great location for me. Sadly, I won't be going back anymore. This past weekend when I went to get a gel manicure, they charged me extra to remove my polish (but didn't tell me until after the fact) which is a new policy apparently. Additionally, after getting my nails done on Saturday AM, they started peeling on Wednesday AM and I noticed other nails have sharp edges that keep getting caught on fabrics/clothing. When I'm paying $40 for a gel manicure I expect to get more than 3 days before the polish comes off (my gel manicures usually lasts 14-18 days without any signs of wear when I get them done at a salon by my office in Parsippany for $25). I just had probably the worst manicure I have ever had.  I left over an hour ago and my polish is still in a gooey stage and I just put a dent in another nail.  The first time I came to this spa, I had Maria, who was awesome.  I made an appointment for my second visit with Maria but didn't get her as my tech.  I had Fanny who wasn't friendly at all and did an "ok" job.  This time I had Stella who wasn't friendly at all either and my nail polish looks awful, probably from an old bottle of polish.  I would go back again if I could guarantee and appointment with Maria.  Very disappointing, I live only a few blocks away and I'm a great tipper so really their loss. First time visiting today. One of the cleanest and most relaxing nail spas in JC. The prices are very reasonable and the staff was super friendly. Fanny was my nail tech. She was efficient,very thorough, and didn't skimp on the after manicure massage! My gel manicure came out very nice and the products used were of great quality, not the cheap aloe lotion and no name oils you might see at other salons. I could see that the supplies and equipment had been properly sterilized and/or provided new depending on what you are getting done. Looking forward to going back for a pedi soon! Read Less

Second time I came here and I won't be going back. Ridiculously overpriced compared to the surrounding area, for not great service. I now have to redo my own pedicure because of the poor, rushed job that was just done on my toes, by the owner no less. Polish is too light (and likely watered down), you can still see my nail beds. I have been contemplating writing this review because I really want to like this nail salon but each time I go there I get disappointed over and over again. The salon itself has a very inviting decor and a lot of polish colors to select from. However I don't know if the technicians are over worked or if they just don't care but I am never happy with the final results. There use to be a woman named Paulola who use to be great! But I was told that she left...The woman who owns the salon also looks stressed out and hovers over the women doing the nails (this makes ME feel uncomfortable) I have had a number of bad experiences here- either the technicians doing unsanitary things (I.e. Touching my hands right after touching someone else's feet-gross) or really rude behavior from the technicians and the owner. I called prior to coming for a mani/pedi to make sure they were still taking customers. I got there at 6:30pm they close at 7:30pm.I got here very excited to finally relax and get a pedicure since I'm 8 months pregnant and unable to do my own mani pedi.They seemed nice very nice at first and I now see that it is because they were trying to get in as many customers as possible.The older male who did the first half of my pedicure rushed it and I had to tell him twice if he can please clean my toe nails correctly. He cut me with the nail file because we was filing so hard and scrubbed too hard with foot scrub.  Even then he still didn't do a good job. It took ten minutes maybe even less to do everything. Then an older woman stepped in to polish my toe nails and was also rushing. You could see it in her face that she wanted to hurry and finish fast.Please do not rush and expect people to pay for a half done job. I should of paid half of the price for the half done job. If you're going to rush people and act like you don't want to be here and can't do the job right then don't take people in after a certain time to avoid unsatisfied customers.I might try this place again but request that someone else service me rather than what seemed to be the owners and didn't do such good job. I wish I could give this place a 3.5 because my experience was ok.. not horrible, but not the best.  I came in for a mani/pedi and got seated immediately to begin my pedicure.  It was a husband and wife team and the husband started my pedicure and the wife finished with painting my toes (this isn't out of the ordinary and has happened to me at other places).  The manicure was done by another woman... and I'm thinking to myself (how the heck am I supposed to tip everyone!)  The fans to dry my toes and nails was so cold, but I did get a great back massage by the husband.  Overall the place was really clean and decorated nicely - the service was just mediocre - I will probably be back to give them another go before I rule them out! I'm confused about any of the negative reviews on this place. I've been going to J nails about two years now and I have never been disappointed. I actually look forward to going and relaxing while I get my mani/pedi. The staff is so friendly and the owner is even friendlier. I've witnessed her keep her cool composure when customers have been rude. She goes out of her way to keep everyone happy and satisfied. It may cost more than other places but it is worth it. You get a quality job 100 percent of the time and they fix any mistakes they do make. I brought my children in once as my sitter plans fell through and the owner wasn't bothered at all as some would be. She allows well behaved and quiet pets as well that usually sit in a lap.That said, the place is always immaculately clean and nice smelling.I go out of my way to come here and no where else. After many many fails at New Zion nails for the past few YEARS on Newark Avenue, I finally decided to go out of my way and try J nails on Grove Street. While I believe it is a little bit more expensive compared to all of the nail salons that are on Newark Avenue, The quality of the service as well as the cleanliness and better equipments is really worth the extra few bucks. It just creates a more relaxing experience all around. They file your nails exactly the way you asked them to be filed unlike other places that I've previously mentioned. They also don't give you attitude after you've pointed out the glaring imperfections unlike other places I've previously mentioned. I walk out satisfied every time. Read Less

I just had the worst manicure experience of my life here. The "technician" I had from the get go was unfriendly, then when she actually started working on my nails, she was so rough with my hands, completely careless and using way more than necessary force, that she actually pushed my cuticles so hard it tore open a little. I let out an ouch, then not only did she not acknowledge let along apologize for the fact that she just cut me,  she actually complained that I scared her. I thought she didn't realize what just happened, so I told her hey can you ease up a bit cause you just split my cuticle and it stings now. She completely ignored me. J Nails is relatively clean and new with lots of colors and options, which is good. Unfortunately, I would still rather not get a pedicure there. The staff seems scared of the owner who is once the the least friendly people I have ever met. She is only interested in getting as many people in and out of the place as possible.The pedicure chairs are nice but the actual experience is lacking. The massage is almost nothing and they have a tendency to use the body scrub too harshly. I very rarely walk out relaxed but more annoyed I ended up going again. If there were more places near by I would not go. Also, not being open on Sunday's is a pain. Read Less
