Best gel manicure I've ever gotten in Hoboken!! Gloria gave me a pedicure - very quick and efficient and then Martha gave me a gel mani, eyebrow and lip wax - absolutely fantastic! Called to make an appointment 30 minutes prior to stopping by. Thank goodness I called ahead because the salon was PACKED! While I was waiting to be seen, I overheard the receptionist telling other women that walked in that there was an hour and half wait. I had a gel manicure and I can't say anything about how long it has lasted as it has only been 2 days. However, the technician paid close attention to detail when it came to painting and filing my nails, which techs don't usually do when the salon is busy. The salon has over 100 gel/shellac colors to choose from. The only down side is that they didn't know how to do a marble nail. Favorite nail salon in Hoboken. They have every color you could ever want from Essie to OPI and a huge gel selection. The best time to go is Mon-Wed when they have their $25 mani-pedi special, other days of the week a mani-pedi will be $30, which is still pretty reasonable for the NYC/Hudson County area. I've been going to Modern at least once a month for almost two years now and every nail technician I've had has been great and I've never had an issues. They also have a member card where you can accumulate points to get money off of your purchase which is a nice perk to have if you go often. I love this place and I go there very often. Lately when the owner-manager is not there I have been turned away. Today they told me there was not space available - maybe because I was with my eight year old daughter - but then a group went in after us and they have been accommodated. Pity.Read Less

The service here is absolutely amazing. Everyone is super nice and it's a beautiful salon. It is also spotless. The owner was telling us (I took my mom) that the salon is tested weekly for diseases, bacteria, etc and if anything is found, they are shut down until they can pass the test. Usually my go-to nail place in Hoboken but after today will highly reconsider. My nail technician "E" was incredibly disengaged and rushed through the mani/pedi barely giving me any attention. Instead she talked to her coworkers the whole time. the pedicure foot exfoliation and massage was laughable, and she cut too deep into one of my cuticles and I started bleeding. the entire time she acted like it was a burden for me to be there. her work is fine, just fine. certainly not the high caliber I'm used to at Modern . there are great technicians there but when you get a bad one it is BAD. I wanted to get gel nails done, I had been here previously and was happy with the service. The price was also ok, I had payed $30 for a manicure and pedicure. I called in ahead to ask the price for a manicure and pedicure with gel nails and whoever picked up the phone told me it was $52. I called other places and this was the best price they had given me so I decided to go. Once I got there they did my nails and I was happy about it. When it came to paying they told me it was $87 !!!!!! I was furious if I had known I would have never gone there to pay so much! So much more expensive than anywhere else I've ever been. This is my go-to nail place! Honestly the best gel manicure out there and trust me, I've tried enough places to know. Even regular manicures are great when you need a break from the gel! Modern nails also offers a reward program - hard to find in Hoboken - which is always a nice treat. If you want to receive an attitude for wanting to get your nails done, come to this place. My friend and I came here and said we wanted gel fill ins and my friend was getting a new set on. The lady started flipping through the reservation book and huffing and puffing (after a different lady had already told us we could sit down). She was saying she didn't know about tonight (even though there was still 2 hours til closing). She was really rude to my friend as well and seemed to inflate the price to get us to leave which worked. I know this is Hoboken but that seemed closer to Manhattan prices. Favorite nail spot in Hoboken. Good quality for a great price. I'm sure there are places that offer higher quality but they will charge you an arm and a leg. They offer a good gel mani and regular pedi combo package which is what I always get. There's also a cash discount which makes the price comparable to nail places in the suburbs. It's always packed so make sure you call ahead. My suggestion is to keep going til you find a technician you like and then always ask for her to assure consistency. Try to go during off-peak times to make sure you actually get a decent massage with your pedi. Read Less

5 stars for the simple fact that Sun did an amazing job on my manicure as I was rushing to an appointment right after. She really worked with my complete lack of time management and fixed my manicure not once but TWICE as I was being a pain in the butt and kept messing up my nails. She even added an Essie quick dry serum (not the one by the dryers) For no extra charge although she mentioned it usually was.I was going to a salon right up the block religiously but I think I was just converted! I've lived in Hoboken for 8 years and while I have go-to nail salons, my heart isn't set to just one place. I came to Modern Nails after the amazing yelp reviews - and I have to say I agree. I was very fortunate to walk in on a Sunday and be taken on the spot. As I sat there I realized everyone else had an appointment and the wait line got longer and longer (I will call ahead with an appointment next time). I got Sun, who I have the impression was management or the owner. She was very polite and crazy thorough on my nails. No joke she used some filing equipment I've never seen before. Sun was also very honest when the bottle of color I chose was in bad condition and she was quick and helpful in finding me a replacement (ps they have 700 colors in house). I gave a 4 instead of 5 because one of my cuticles was cut a little too deep- it didn't bleed but it stung when she put the alcohol on it. Very minor, but I'd like to see how long the gel manicure lasts before I give 5 stars. PS- fun fact I found fascinating: Kim Kardashian has been here!UPDATE: my gel manicures from Sun have been the longest lasting I've ever had. I had them in for a month and my nails barely chipped and didn't even yellow in color. That is the good stuff!
