I was looking for a recommendation for someone who can properly color black hair. An old coworker suggested Monument Style and I went ahead and made an appointment.  I've been going to Patricia for months now and I am thankful for the flexibility that she provides in scheduling and the passion that she shares with me as a client.  The salon is super comfortable with good music playing and water/coffee offered. I've been pleased with the hair color done so far and look forward to my next visit. Read Less

My experience at Monument Style was utterly magical. I'm always a little nervous at salons, but I was instantly made to feel welcome. Pat is easily one of the most welcoming and skilled salon workers I have ever met. I got to sit in the comfiest robe, feel at home, and treated like a queen. Unlike other experiences, it felt open and left so informed. Pat and I discussed what I wanted to do with my hair and she walked me through the entire process. I wanted to dye my hair a mix of strawberry blonde and red. I left learning so much more about my hair type, how to find the right hair products, how to take care of it in the future in general, and how to keep my new hair color looking as nice for as long as possible! We talked about life and balancing school with life and she gave me great advice. Throughout the whole process, I felt totally comfortable. Not only did I have a great experience, my hair was amazing! It was beautiful and even better than I imagined. It was so pretty and I felt awesome. Pat was an absolute gem. I absolutely recommend her to everyone who wants to not only have a fantastic experience, but look absolutely gorgeous. Read Less

Tldr; My hair cut is a mess, so choppy that even a ponytail doesn't look neat. Overpriced and not worth your time! I have given it time and washed my hair several times since my cut/dry to see what I can do, but I need to spend money on another cut to fix her work. I paid her a visit to talk about my dissatisfaction with the services specifically, remaining calm and collected, but Patricia attacked my character; she is pompous, rude, argumentative and doesn't understand 'customer service' etiquette. Full review: I'd never been to Monument Style before and thought I'd mix it up and give it a go! Patricia cut my hair and I've never had such a bad experience, with such bad results. The cut/blow dry was painful at times, lots of tugging/tearing (my partner was there and described me as nearly being lifted from the seat!) I asked for my hair to be cut 2-3", for long layers, for there to be a 'V' shape at the back, and for my bangs to be trimmed/blended into the rest of my hair; none of which was achieved. The bangs are a disaster and I'll have to grow them out again before their next styling. She hadn't blended them into my hair and when I asked her to do this she trimmed too much off resulting in them being shorter and thinned out, but still not blended. After blow drying my hair she proceeded to curl a few strands, which I'm lead to believe is what concealed the choppy and inconsistent hair length when holding the mirror to the back of my head. After a two hour cut and dry I was ready to get out of there (I've never sat for so long!) and although not thrilled with the bangs, it seemed alright and I decided to go along with Patricia's philosophy of 'live in it for a day and see how you feel'... I got home and the curls had fallen out—so the choppiness was obvious—and my family commented on how there were sections of hair missing. I typically have long layers, but they are supposed to fall together and give the hair volume—not appear scattered and choppy! I'm not sure what shape it was cut in either, because it isn't anything close to a 'V' shape and there are chunks that clearly stick out. To fix it up before going out that night I tried straightening it to see if that would help at all, nope! It was an absolute mess... I've had to put it up and pin the bangs back. I have pictures but it seems I can't add them to a review? Now I need to drop more money on a shorter cut to neaten it up and the bangs are a lost cause until they grow out! Not worth $72. I paid up at the time because it seemed ok and yes, it is her time, but I didn't realize just how badly it was cut. I went back the day after to discuss my dissatisfaction without the intent of making a scene or posting on social media, hoping it could be resolved. A partial refund for a new hair cut would have been appreciated, but all Patricia wanted to do was argue that she was entirely in the right. I understand that it was her time, but it was my time and appearance as well, and this is the worst hair cut I have ever received. She did offer to cut it more, but I would rather put my hair in the hands of a skilled hairdresser. During our discussion she informed me I don't have any hairdresser certifications, which is true, but I have had long hair my entire life—and as most have experienced at least once, there have been times I haven't entirely loved the results—but I have never had such an awful cut which actually needed to be fixed! When leaving I said that I will be reviewing her poorly and she said she didn't mind, comparing herself to Donald Trump, speaking along the lines of: "He has a bad reputation, but look at him—he's our president!" Clearly she doesn't care about her reputation & quality of cuts, but rather being in the black and making a profit. No wonder most of her clients are one-time Colonial Inn visitors! Some salons I have had better experiences at are Serenity Spa & Salon, Salon at 142, InStyle, and Dellaria! Never have I required my hair to be cut again. Read Less

OK--this hairdresser is sweet (when she's not being condescending) and the salon is beautiful. I went here to get a formal updo on Tuesday before my wedding. I did actually have a good time at the salon, but I have to say this was the worst hairstyle I've had in my LIFE. I am so incredibly devastated to have this hairstyle on all my pictures. I have to deal with the disappointed face of my new husband. I asked for a formal updo with volume, but instead she curled my hair--and took over an hour doing it. (And yes, the curls fell down right away, which was fine, because they were horrendous.) I should have complained, but this was my wedding, I was with my new sister-in-law, and I didn't want to be the person complaining. She asked if I wanted my bangs to the side, but I said no. Then I said I trusted her--yes, I am too nice. She curled my bangs. I think I gained thirty years and yes, I looked ridiculous All she had to give me was an updo. Or curl my hair and have it hold. When my sister-in-law got married, the hairdresser gave me a gorgeous hairdo in ten minutes straight. (Curls, to the side, and it held all night long.) I really don't think she has the skills to be a hairdresser, and I would recommend anyone reading this to stay far, far, FAR away. When I asked her to do a formal updo on the phone, she asked me if I had any combs etc. to bring. I told her I didn't. (Small civil ceremony.) Maybe she didn't have any bobby pins or hair elastics, because she asked me again when I told her at the salon I wanted it to be up. She definitely had time to restock if that was an issue. She was also super condescending and demeaning. She kept on asking me why I didn't tell her I was getting married (it was a civil ceremony, and we were planning to have four guests). She then said some people raise the prices for brides, but she would never do that. She then charged my sister-in-law who was so sweet and volunteered to pay for me $250 dollars for a "bridal style" a.k.a the worst hairstyle of my life. I would have looked so much better if I had just brushed my hair and attended. Even my own attempt would have been so much better. At least I have some taste. It was a good day--but seeing how sad my husband is, seeing how sad I am knowing that we have no good pictures of me on my wedding day, it's horrible. No one should have to go through that, and the Colonial Inn needs to get a hairdresser actually qualified (who goes to conferences, who can do different styles) in that lovely space. Yes, I was relaxed before the wedding, but I also could have just hung out in the bar and had an even better (and much less expensive and devastating) time. Colonial Inn--if she's under any contract with you, PLEASE hire someone else. Your guests are begging you. Read Less

This review is for bridal hair - myself (bride), my sister (MOH), mother of bride & mother of groom. We all stayed at the Colonial Inn next door, so Monument Style was a logical place to get our hair done. PROS4.5 stars for outcome - all emerged from salon looking great. 5 stars for service and experience - the salon owner arranged for the salon to be closed down day of wedding, so that she could give my party the highest level of attention possible. It is a very nice space, tastefully decorated, and in a great location. It was a super-relaxing experience, and exactly what I needed right before the busyness that was ahead. She arranged for tea cakes to be delivered (this ended up being my lunch, as everyone knows the bride never gets time to eat), and champagne for my party to sip on while getting ready! CONS3 stars for cost - it was on the high end compared to other quotes I received for hairdressing, but not totally out of reason. 2 stars for flexibility - The salon owner definitely has her own style, which might not be your style. I came to the salon seeking a casual, organic type of updo, and after several tries, it became clear that this wasn't her jam. I'm flexible so we eventually met somewhere in the middle, wherein I emerged with elegant curls. However, lots of brides probably wouldn't be as flexible, especially when considering the cost. Had I really had my heart set on the casual updo, I would have had to go elsewhere. OVERALL The woman who owns the salon is super nice, and I am grateful for all she did to make my wedding morning go smoothly. The cost was pretty high for just the hairstyling, but being so relaxed right before my wedding was priceless. Also - I'm pretty sure there were some other more positive reviews on yelp before I booked my appointment back in June. I'm not sure where those reviews are now, but I would not have trusted this salon with my wedding hair, if all I saw were two one-star reviews. Read Less

I was there last week for my brother in-laws wedding. Both my Mother-In-law (Mother of the groom/MOG) and the mother of the bride(MOB) had appointments. One was at 10 or closely after and the MOB was at 11am. The bride received a call that the Mother of the groom (apt @10am) was very unhappy with her blowout and asked if I would go down to make sure everything was OK. I walked in and was never greeted by the shop owner who was in the middle of blow-drying another client. She looked at me but didn't make any attempt to welcome me into her shop. My MIL/MOG proceeds to tell me how she is unhappy with her hair and shows me a picture of what she wants, which is her everyday style, she is 68 years old with short above the neck length hair. She was not looking for anything but a nice blow out with some volume. The time is now 11:10am. Which now means the shop owner is behind on getting back to her and she is also 10 mins late on getting to the MOB. I politely ask how much longer (as both the mothers are next for makeup) and the owner tells me that they can both leave and come back. Now, for weeks both moms were very clear that they wanted their hair done first, as they have short hair and it has to be soaked in order for it to be styled. I asked her again, if she knew how much longer, as she never answered me the first time. She gestured with her hairbrush and said, "do you see what I'm doing, when I'm done with this I will fix her hair". I said, "That's fine but do you know how long"? How was I to know if this other customer was getting styled, a perm, up-do etc.? Our make-up artist next door was waiting for them. She immediately told me that "I could leave now". I repeated to her I was just asking a question. She said again for me to leave. The MOB left with me and had the Brides hair dresser do her hair, she was just as shocked and felt extremely disrespected, to say the least! The Mother of the Groom, stayed only because she was already in the chair with her cape on and wasn't sure if the hairdresser upstairs would be able to fit them both in and didn't want to take the chance and frankly the Mother of the Groom, my mother in law is just an extremely nice woman all around. Needless to say, when discussing this with others nearby - most people we're NOT surprised as they said they haven't encountered the shop owner to be just as rude. I would never recommend this shop to anyone. The bad manners and the unwarranted disrespect is uncalled for. Find another shop near by - it's not worth the wait or the attitude you receive! Read Less

Read Less
