I've been going here for a couple of years and have always had a good experience!  They take their time with your mani/pedi and it always comes out flawless.  It is a small salon and gets very busy (as they do good work), so you may need to wait - make sure to block out some time in your schedule - but it is worth it! Hollywood Star is my favorite nail salon in South Boston. They are always busy and they always fit you in. The pedicure lasts me 3+ weeks without a single chip (isn't that a miracle in itself?). The manicures are solid too.The only thing I would improve is their selection of colors - they have multiple brands of polish, including OPI and Essie, but only 2-3 walls of colors. Very friendly, thorough, and they won't let you leave unless your nails are absolutely flawless.  My gel manicures only start to fade after three weeks when my nail beds get too long and it's time for a new color.  At that point, the polish is still perfect-- it's just that my nails grew too much that I need a new manicure.  This is the best place to get a gel manicure in South Boston, hands down.  I've been living here in South Boston for 10 years and have tried them all.  I highly recommend Hollywood Star! Great gel manicures!Nothing is worse than getting a gel manicure, paying the premium cost and then having your nails chip or peal in under two weeks time. When I come to Hollywood, I have never had to worry about that. I have had manicures last a good MONTH and the cost is one that can not be beat by anyone in the city.I am a bigger fan of the manicures than the pedicures as I feel the pedicures are quite basic and not built on experience. That being said, I have been offered parafin as a complimentary service with my manicure. Overall though I am here to have my nails last and not for the luxury spa experience so I am not picky. They are great about holding your reservation, willing to stay open a little later if you want to come after work, friendly and have a pretty good selection in polish colors. I decided to get a leg wax since I was there getting a manicure - DO NOT get WAXED here. The room is gross, the floor is dirty, the woman opened and closed the door several times during the wax where I was lying on the table with only underwear on, and a guy was right outside getting a pedi. She didn't know how to wax, clearly. It hurt, abnormally, and I had a 1/2 leg wax and she left SO much wax and hair on my legs - and had not way to clean it off - no oils or remover. She said it was all off after I spent 10 minutes trying to help her and show her all the wax. I put on my jeans and when I came home my legs were covered in dark wax spots that I needed to go out and buy an wax kit with oil remover. Waste of time and $$.The gel manicure I had last night and it still feels soft and tacky today, not hard and resilient like they usually do. Also, really lame on the massaging and extras. No soaking fingers, but perhaps this is ok, but not worth the rest. Read Less

Hollywood nails was great. 5 stars unless you like a large selection of gel, which they did not have.My gel manicure from Hollywood lasted a full two weeks and my pedicure remained flawless as well. I felt my technician was skilled, got little gel on my fingertips or cuticles and cleaned it up before it set. I've been to a lot of nail salons in my day... and this was by far the worst. The people who work here were rude, combative, and pushy. They put a smile on and talk badly about the customers who are there, myself included. I'm pretty sure they weren't aware I understood what they were saying.... this was the only bit of amusement I got from being there.I asked the manicurist doing my nails to apply the gel nail polish without putting any water on my nails or soaking my hands (I find that they last longer this way and that's how my normal nail place does it for everyone...) Lets just say my manicurist wasn't happy and so she started talking to the other ladies who work there about me, my request, and how she didn't want to do it that way. She decided she was going to do it her way and i was going to like it..To add insult to injury, the manicurist I had used her gross yellow finger nail to push back my cuticles instead of the tools. I didn't see any sterilizing equipment around, and there was no barbicide for the tools to go into either. GA-ROSS. I asked her to stop doing that and to use the tools. So obliged but I kept saying that it was going to chip and that's not how I want them to do it. So, the manicurist who was working on the person next to me told me if it chips that they guarantee their work. So, I just had to come back in. After spending about 90 minutes at the nail salon politely disagreeing with the manicurists the day before I was going on a two week trip to Asia. I needed them to be done right the first time. Went here to get a gel mani pedi before heading off to vacation. I came in the morning without an appointment and was seated right away. Two other girls were getting manicures at the time. Nina was my nail technician during my visit. She was a perfectionist! She was patient and thorough with every nail.
