When you go to a Mario Tricoci Salon, you really are paying for the brand. I paid $250-$275 for a color and a cut--and I never do anything drastic.  Some colorists and stylists are obviously better than others.  My usual colorist was top level and eventually became less and less available. When it came to the nail salon, I paid close to $40 for a manicure that was just ok. I asked the manicurist which colors were popular for the season, and she basically said "all of them." Not a fun and friendly experience. I found a salon that meets all of my needs, and my new colorist/stylist goes above and beyond my expectations. The best part? Just like the 2 star rating suggests, MEH, I've experienced waaaaaay better. I really hate leaving bad reviews and I have struggled to post this one because its a big salon and I don't want to knock it but man is it ever OVER priced for the services you get. I have blond hair and got a gift certificate for this salon so I scheduled an appointment and got excited. I saved many photos of rooted dark to light blond balayage that I was loving and hopeful that the stylist would be able to do.... but she didn't. She gave me highlights, and nothing like the photos that I brought in. The kicker is she up charged me $50 for some garbage olaplaex conditioner treatment saying "my hair would feel 20x better" yes she said "20x" and guess what, not a difference, I get my hair softer after using plan ol' loreal conditioner than this useless up charge. It still burns me I fell for it, ugh, should have known better. How can someone measure 20x better anyway. My tip is DEF do not agree to it, its a solid waste of money. Also I was charged $60 for toner, yup simple toner just to take the brass out of my hair, that was applied for less than 2 minutes....another upcharge and to be honest, I didn't see any difference. Im upset that I didn't speak up or say anything, when I said that my hair doesn't look like the photos I brought in, she told me "its a process, next time we will get you closer to that" Hmm, there will be no next time. I didnt pay $245 (with tip) to return and pay MORE money for the look I came in for. Can you imagine this service at a restaurant..." I'd like a burger and fries please", you receive spaghetti, ask "why?" since its not what you wanted and they say "next time you'll get a burger and fries?!" come on. My last note is that I can do my own hair but after receiving a gift certificate I wanted to treat myself, big mistake....my hair feels better and looks better after I give myself home highlights from products purchased at Sallys...and wait for it, they have Wella toner for $6.....yup same one I paid $60 for at this salon....used it today and my hair looks amazing! I was avoiding a haircut for a long time since my last very short/way too short cut that left me a little apprehensive of cutting my hair again. My mom is a regular here and she recommended that I go and see one of the top stylists here. I have to say mom was right (she always is) I got a great trim I feel sexy and my hair is so easy to work with and this was a very pleasant, stress free trip. Nice location, but the staff including the receptionist don't seem to care, which is unfortunate since their prices aren't cheap. I went in for an essential manicure for the first time. I had Mia. She was sweet, but she didn't even ask me how long or short I wanted my nails and just started filing them. Also, she didn't even file my nails properly, they were crooked. Finally, she kept looking at her watch, which really upset me the most. I understand that they're on appointment based schedules, but you shouldn't rush through a manicure that someone is spending $26 for. Anyway, after polishing my nails, she missed all of my sides and thankfully they had someone else fix the problem. This time, I had Susie. She was great, she re-did the polish, even though she missed a few sides. But, I was really happy with her and would definitely recommend her. Overall, I probably wouldn't return. As a manicurist, shouldn't you check the entire nail to see if it's fully polished. I feel like you can get a better manicure for $8 at other places. Read Less

please do not make the mistake i did and get your hair colored by barb.  she has no idea what she is doing.  i wanted my hair to be colored light brown, and barbara turned my hair platinum. she tried toning it, but it still looked horrible!!!  management was no help!!!!  i was charged an overpriced fee for a job that another salon had to repair.  i refused to go to work like that.  my hair was brittle! by the way not only does she not know what she is doing,  but she is also impersonable, she did not say a word to me the entire time i was there other than what i wanted to do to my hair.  she apparently did not ask enough about my hair!  then she works on your hair while sulking.  how enjoyable! I went to this location for years.  This company is no longer reputable. I should have tried other salons years ago.  I would have found out that they are more current on styles , more courteous, never need management because there are no problems, hair dye does not wash out after the first shampoo because they carry permanent color for low lights....etc...  Collette Ridge is a manager at this location.  She will never be fair to you.  She often pretends she is not there so that she does not have to deal with a problem. Caution!!!  Whatever you do, if you get your hair colored at this location DO NOT USE BARB. I put myself through the torture of sitting through highlights with her.  Not once could she get the color right. Then I would go home and all of the lowlights would wash out!!    I would call and complain and she would UNWILLINGLY put some lowlights back in.  She has the nastiest disposition, (unless you were on her list of the select few She would be courteous to).  Also BARB was the most expensive and always raising her prices. She is the head of the department BUT definitely NOT qualified!Finally,  I went to another salon, I only had to explain one time what I wanted, they had permanent hair color and my hair came out perfect! Now I can wash my hair without worrying about the dye washing out with each shampoo, plus I am treated like a human being.If you must go to a Mario Tricoci location, the only person I would recommend is Kim at the Skokie locaton, a stylist who cuts hair.  She is as sweet as can be and very capable, but unfortunately she works for this company. I came here recently for a mani and pedi before my wedding. They use "no chip" nail polish instead of gel. The colors they have are beautiful and they were able to create a nice frosty blush color by layering two polishes. It's been a week and my manicure is still perfect! A few days prior to my wedding I had cracked my toe nail. I was so worried because of course I had peep toe shoes. I go to Mario Tricoci on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, I have been going to three Mario Tricoci locations (depending on which I have been living closest to at the time) for over 15 years. I never had problems at the other two locations when I went to get massages. But today, when I went to get a massage at the Old Orchard location, it was horrible. First of all, the woman performing my massage spoke very broken English. I could barely understand what she was saying to me, which caused confusion regarding the type of massage I thought I was getting (a Signature Massage) and the type of massage I ended up receiving (a Swedish Massage). Furthermore, her bedside manner was nonexistent: she was very rude and dismissive. She did not even bother to consult with me about which portions of my back I am most concerned about and, at the conclusion of the massage, she quickly left the room and did not even bother to see me out. But worst of all she had body odor and her stomach kept grumbling throughout my service, which did not create a relaxing environment. I got a massage at the Old Orchard location many months prior to the one I had done today; that massage was done by a different individual. It was not as bad as the one I received today, but it was not great either. The only reason I'm giving this location two stars is because Janice and Naz do my waxing and they are both fantastic. Normally the price would have been prohibitively expensive for me, but I signed up for the texting communication option and got 20$ off my first service - pretty sweet deal! The hair stylist was lovely - I had a great time chatting with her and she really gave me what I want! It was not what I expected the massage should have been deep tissue yet it felt like a Swedish massage the facial wasn't the best and the Pedi was okay no massage chair and it was out dated not to mention not a lot of nail polish selections. I got my hair done for prom by Nick last year, my hair cut by Mary in October, and today got my highlights redone by Adrianna. I was originally going to change my hair color, but thanks to Adrianna's knowledge, she saved me from the risk of having orange hair instead of the dirty blonde hair I was aiming for by getting highlights redone. It cost more than I had hoped for, but in the end it was worth it! All 3 of them did a fabulous job and really seemed to care about their client's wellbeing. My only gripe is that they have you blow dry and brush your own hair. For 110 dollars, you'd kinda expect to have them do it for you after a color treatment. Overall, a wonderful place. Read Less

I have been coming here for facials for a few years now and never had a bad experience. This time, however, was not good at all. The esthetician was great, but the product used for the facial was terrible. The day after my facial, my face was peeling like crazy. I was embarrassed to go to work. This has never happened to me before. My mother called Mario Tricoci right away and told them what had happened. She was with me the day we got our facials. They told her that a manager would call us back.We never heard from the manager. Talk about terrible customer service. Had a mani/pedi. The pedicure OMG amazing !! I have had pedicures for years but nothing like this. The warm scented neck pillow was such a pleasant surprise. Aromatherapy at its best. The tub is great to massage your feet. But I must mention the lovely technician responsible for the ultimate pampering and that is Mirela. She had me so relaxed, I could of fallen asleep. I've been here once and I've also called a couple times to make reservations and/or to see what is available for booking. The lady that did my pedicure and manicure about a month ago was very sweet, I forgot her name but she was so nice. The actually no chip mani/pedi was weak but the lady was nice. That made it worth it. The ladies at the front desk are not welcoming at all, they have this thing where they all have blank stares and assume you know EVERYTHING ABOUT every service or price etc. I just called to make a reservation for 2 massages for my friend and I this weekend. I preferred to get them together because it would be silly to get them an hour apart. I called and spoke with a 'Kim' and she seemed ok at first when she answered but when I asked about making a reservation for a massage, she asked, 'which massage do you want?' & I said 'I have a gift card that I received for my birthday and it comes with a 60-min massage so I'm not actually sure what that entails.' She went quiet for a second and then said 'well, we have different kinds so you need to know which one you want.' At this point I felt like an idiot so I said 'which ones are available and is there any way I can reserve two spots together for my friend & I?' She said 'no, we only have one technician.' I told her I'd just call back and I asked what her name was so I can reach her again hopefully.' The next thing she said was bizarre, she said 'well there are 28 of us GSR'S (whatever that is) so you may not speak with me again.' And I just said 'okay, thanks' and I hung up. She could not have been less welcoming. She assumed (and I am in customer service) that I know about every massage. And why are there SO many types of massages and only ONE technician? That's ridiculous. Especially on a Saturday in the summer, especially during wedding season, graduation season etc, and for such a large location, I'm unimpressed. She said there's 28 other people answering the phones I'm guessing so why is there ONE massage technician if that's the volume of callers the salon is receiving?! What if the technician gets sick? That's ridiculous. The lady that answered the phone was rude and I hope not to talk to her again because she's unexperienced in customer service. I don't know anyone that knows the precise difference in price or method to each massage offered, that's not common knowledge, especially not knowing what a salon/spa offers. Today I went to do a fill in gel nails,and this is the worst experience! Poor lady had no experience whatsoever in doing gel nails! She left bubbles all over,and made them so fat I have feeling I'm wearing stone on my nails! What a beautiful time of the year for a haircut! The mall holiday lights are so festive, and going out in the cold to battle all the crowds was totally worth the trip to Mario Tricoci. So we've been on the edge trying to figure out if we should go back to our latest stop for our boys' haircuts or step it up a bit. Lately they've been completely obsessed with their hair, so we figured we'd take them in for some real style. Who knew 5th grade boys even noticed hair at this age?We obtained a first time coupon with Mario's app and got $20 off two boys haircuts. Children's haircuts up to age 11 are $25 and $30 age 11+. We asked for stylists who were used to cutting boys hair. Each boy had a different stylist so they could get their cuts at the same time. Both stylists (one was Issella...forgot the other) have boys around the same age. Both stylists were fantastic and really listened to what my boys wanted. They looked at pics with the boys and gave them (and us) suggestions. Note: They wash hair after cutting here. This was done at the last place where we got their hair cut...I guess that's a thing. Mario is run like a clock--everyone was on time (including us!). It's been remodeled since we were there years ago, with new mirrors and a nice self-serve coat room. The staff is funky and stylish and the place was filled with North Shore moms...well it seemed anyway. We all left super happy, and our boys are IN LOVE with their hair! Asked for a dark, ashy blonde balayage. My colorist, Alex's first attempt made my hair blue. Second attempt turned it yellow. Third time was back to my original balayage color - still pretty yellowish blonde. Three hours later, I left before my hair fell out. To make matters worse, I was charged $20 for a deep conditioning in between my second and third coloring and my hair is absolute straw. Overpriced for the same cut you get at hair cuttery for $13. I had a "coupon" for $20. Their website says that haircuts are $35. I thought, great, I'll pay $15. Nope. I paid $35, because the regular price for a haircut is $55.What are you charging for Mario? The .50 can of pop they offer?! The place is outdated, there's nothing special or interesting about the space, the chairs, the decor. The hairdressers didn't go to a fancy special school where they got trained to cut hair for super models. They went to regular beauty school where they got taught to do regular haircuts.Their consultation means nothing, as you'll still get the cut you didn't ask for. I had my makeup done here and will not be returning ever again. Brides look elsewhere for makeup! Although the lady was super nice, first of all, she kept answering the phone during my appointment. Then she was helping another customer for 10 minutes during my appointment. They herd people in like cattle here. My appointment lasted almost 2 hours and she didn't even finish my makeup because I told her it was taking too long and to just stop. I should have known this was not a good place for makeup when I asked her if she knew how to contour and she had no idea what contouring meant. You must not like makeup that much then and you must not be up to date on the latest makeup trends that are all over the internet!!The airbrush didn't last more than 4 hours before rubbing off. Ew. She spent an hour just doing eye shadow which looked bad and made my eyes look small and wasn't blended properly. She didn't have gel eyeliner and instead was using shadow mixed with water to make eyeliner. It looked so gross and she kept having to correct it with qtips. Seriously more than half of the appointment felt like she was just wiping my face with wet qtips. She gave me the longest eyeliner "wings" ever. It was ridiculous. Asked me if I could do my own eyebrows and mascara. Sure...um..remind me what am I paying you for? Again, the lady was nice so I feel bad writing this review, but other brides need to be warned not to do makeup here for wedding day. Mario Tricoci made it right after the appointment, but it was still a waste of 2 hours and travel time to the salon. But hey, at least I know not to have them do the makeup ON MY WEDDING DAY. Unethical superficial dump!If you're into the whole classy atmosphere, watching anneroxic chicks with strange hair that look like they belong in a Tim Burton movie walk around, or extremely metrosexual or gay men give attitude and nothing more.. then this would be for you.. Rude inconsiderate stylists, unethical managers, shady business practices, over priced & over profited dump this place truly is.My story goes, I was scheduled to have my hair colored at the Old Orchard location. I showed up on time, only to discover that my stylist went home for the night and NOBODY even bothered to contacted me because " it was a very busy day", according to management. Funny, when I got there there was only a handful of people but okay.. I asked to speak with the coloring manager ( orange hair chick), and she did not seem to care, and nobody else was available to do my hair, except some guy who had extremely much higher prices (75% higher to be exact) then what I am use to paying. It wasn't my fault that the stylist went home early so why do I get stuck paying for another stylist whose prices are significantly higher and Mario's wouldn't cover the difference. I left work early to sit in traffic to get there just to turn around and leave, again nobody cared, no compensation/gift card/complimentary service or nothing! I did contact their customer service hotline, and again nobody really cared, all you hear is " I'm sorry, that wasn't right of her, come back again and use someone else, thanks for calling". Click. Anyway, I wound up going to Hair Cuttery down the street and guess what they are a lot cheaper, and much more down to earth atmosphere. Nobody would ever even know the different either! I went for my 3rd highlight. I didn't request the same colorist as she did an (okay-good job) last time; I thought maybe I'd have a great job this time. WRONG. I have dark brunette hair (level 4) & wanted to maintain a highlight to about a 7R. I knew in the consultation she just wasn't getting it when all she asked me about was "so you want to go brighter" What the heck does that mean? Well, I found out the wrong way. She turned me into a blonde, which didn't look nice with my complexion. The foil must have leaked because I have blotchy spots.She put on 2 separate toner applications. It helped, but definitely NOT what I wanted for $175 later. I went to a family graduation party, and alot of people didn't even recognize me saying - You're blonde now". My response was - not by choice. I was suppose to go back, but with my busy schedule in the past 4 weeks, I haven't been able to.Sorry to say - this wasn't a good experience. Read Less

The staff is snobby and rude. The stylists are average at best. And as a bonus you get to blow out your own hair at a station after the cut and color. No matter what your new cut is they will not help you style it. The best part is that this blow out station is in the middle of a heavily walked isle so all eyes are on you and you are made to feel that you are in the way once they have rinsed you out. I was skeptic to go because i heard a lot of the people there were rude or snobby but my colorist Angeles was just great from start to finish she was professional and listened to what i wanted and gave me the results i was hoping for. I came to see MAYA because my friend goes to her so she told me to give her a try... I have very hard hair to style and everywhere i went for a haircut they never teach me how to do it at home.. I went to see Maya on Monday she spent a hour with me talking to me about my hair and why i hate it soo much so when we got to the haircut she told me step by step what she was going to do and she showed me the products i should use. WOW all i kept thinking is this girl is really good. When we got done she told me they way she styles my hair i would be able to do the same at home. ""Arielle"" was super nice and friendly so I put down 15-20% tips for everyone (except the one with bad attitude who did my friend's facial). Then, I got home and received a voice message saying I still owed them $17. This is fine. But, ""Jan"", the other receptionist I had met at the store, gave me an attitude right off the bat and took a very condescending tone with me! She first seemed to imply that I didn't tell ""Arielle"" that I got the more expensive Signature Massage and only paid for the Swedish Massage. AND THEN, she put me on hold forever, all the while it's ME ON HOLD FOREVER on the Saturday night, for me to make an additional payment. THIS GETS BETTER. In the end, through all that, after I gave her my AMEX card # after all this unpleasant experience, she said to me: ""YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU'RE REALLY YOUNG AND..."", implying that I shouldn't have a bad attidude because I am young. In summary,.. 1. I may be three years out of college, but I have a good job, that allows me to pay full price for decent spa services 2. Despite my age, I am still a customer 3. I was in the salon a few weeks ago and i came across a great stylist maya. I have to tell you guys this was the best haircut i ever had in my life. When this women cuts your hair not only is she talented but she listens to your every word what works for you and what doesn't. Her haircuts last months you hair would grow out so well you wouldn't believe. She is sooo sweet and caring and dead on about the latest fashions. I love her and I love the salon now. I went to Mary Pat for a hair cut and I had a great experience. She was super nice and did a great job! I am requesting her every time I go there now. Plus she new a ton about the cubs which was great conversation. For all you guys out there looking for a good place to get a hair cut at a decent price, I recomend Mary Pat 100%. Plus you cant beat the location right on michigan ave and there is a really nice equinox fitness gym on the same floor so you can work out and get styled up without having to run all over town. I moved to Naperville ten years ago. I was recommend to this salon by several people as ""a great hair cut"" but, ""you will pay a price"". I am use to paying $65 for a cut and $90 for a color, however I am use to having good customer service at those prices. My experience there was, it is much like a factory. The people who do the work are great in their field, thus the price is high. I was willing to bare the ""price"" of bad service until one day I had enough. The front desk treats you like dirt if you?re not sporting a huge diamond and designer cloths. The people who actually do the cutting and coloring are better but don't look for the traditional bonding while you get your cut and/or color. I left after 8 years of six to eight weeks of cuts and color because; the management seems to favor making money. In this economy I hope they change their management style. A friend gave me a gift certificate to try the salon again and I did within the last month. I was hoping the experience would have been better however?I still have not changed my mind. This place is ridiculous! I recently got highlights there. When I made the appointment the guy on the phone confirmed that the price was $90 for full highlights. However, when I checked out I was told it was 130.00 because prices START at 90.00 and they could not tell me why my highlights were now 40.00 more. My hair is shoulder length, so I'm not buying the excuse that the check out guy said about my hair being longer than most girls. This is just a way for them to rip people off! What really ticks me off about this place is that after my color service, I was passed to someone else who washed my hair and then sent to a SELF SERVE STATION with hair dryers for me to use! I just paid $130 for highlights and I'm drying my hair myself! Isn't this standard to have the stylist dry your hair after you pay for any hair service?! This is the worst salon/spa I've ever been to. I recently got a mani/pedi here by the rudest woman on the planet. It was so difficult making the appointment because you have to call their 800 number a wait forever for a appt. It does look like a factory outlet salon. The staff are so rude and unprofessional. The lady that did my mani wasn't even looking at what she was doing, she was more concerned with gossiping with her co-workers. And she kept coughing in my face! Who would have thought I could get such a great cut while on vacation from Seattle. My stylist was on vacation and unable to do my hair before I left, but I found Brandon whom I want to highly recommend! His style and flair for hair was FABULOUS! When I got back to my families house my mother and two adult sister were so jealous, they made their own appointments with Brandon. Each one having a very different style. My mother came back with a graduated bob and she looks ten years younger. I can't stress enough how amazing our new hair looks. I have natural curly hair and have a hard time finding someone who ""really"" knows what they are doing. i called and FRANKIE was recommended. i told them i wanted a consultation as it was my first time there. i was assured if i came in a little early for my appt i would be able to speak with the stylist, i came in early and she was late. she rushed, had no hair magazines(what kind of salon doesn't have hair magazines), she was so busy running her mouth and telling me how she knew what she was doing that she wasn't listening. she heard bits and pieces put it all together and i ended up with no hair after i told her i was GROWING MY HAIR and only wanted her to clean it up and shape it. NOT CUT IT ALL OFF. on top of cutting it all off it was an ugly mishapen haircut. she did it in like 5 min (NO SKILL). EVERYTHING i told her not to do she did. when i called back to see what could be done as that was a lot of money to throw down the drain (i had to go a few days later to a REAL stylist and get a REAL haircut) i was given the runaround,and told a manager would call me back. well it's been 10 weeks or so and i'm still waiting. now my hair is super short. I'm not in love with how much I spend here but it is worth it because the girl who colors my hair does a fabulous job. My hair is very fine and I have sensative skin and I have never had any problems with the colors bothering my skin. And, the girl who cuts my hair does a great job. I went to Mario Tricoci for the first time in my life, looking forward to a great new style. I made the appointment on-line (very convenient) and chose first available stylist since I did not have a preference. I was greeted nicely and was told the stylist would be right with me. I waited 20 minutes, no one came so I went back up to the desk to inquire why. Well, the stylist I was suppose to get was cutting and styling someone elses hair. No other stylist was available. I was asked to wait, being told "she works fast". I told them this was not a very good first impression. Feeling very disappointed and a bit angry I decided it might be best if I leave. I didnt know that anybody could ever get a bad facial, but I did today. I checked in at the front desk and the lady just told me to go upstairs. She didnt tell me to go into the spa or anything so I waited outside in a very loud waiting room. Usually when I go to a spa, I am greeted with very nice people and asked to put on a robe or something. This was not the case... When it was time for the facial, I was taken back to a room and asked to get undressed from the waist up. After I got undressed she came in and starting making alot of noise (this was the person that was going to do my facial) . This was just really not relaxing. Next, I was laying there and she put this really bright light right in my eyes, and it was blinding. I ask her if I could remove it, because it was hurting and she didnt do anything. Then after analyzing my face, she tried to sell me their products and basically told me that my dermatologist was wrong in what she prescribed. After all of this the facial began. At first, I felt like she didnt know how to put lotion on my face, because it was really uncomfortable and by this time I wasn't enjoying the special gift that my husband had gotten for me for getting a new job. She took the first layer off and then starting squeezing my blackheads out. THIS HURT SOOOO BAD. I had to ask her to quit. I felt like she ripped off my nose at one point. After this, then everything started to get a little better. The massaging was nice, and I started relax except for the fact that I was right next to the bathroom. I would hear a toilet flushing every 2-3 minutes and people talking outside my room. I was getting so annoyed. Oh and the funny thing was that when I left, the receptionist asked me how it was and said OK (thats it). I guess now I know that OK is all they need to hear to feel good about their services. Yesterday, I had my hair highlighted and cut at the Oakbrook location. I simply love it! I cannot begin to tell you the number of compliments I have received from both women and men. Being a woman of color, I was skeptical about having my hair styled at a salon predominately for Caucasians. In fact, I called in advanced to request a stylist that had experience working with African American hair textures. Both of the women who styled and colored my hair were attentive, courteous, and enthusiastic about offering me a new look. I had an appointment for a 10 minute brow wax, I was told to go upstairs to check in, was checked in, and once I was taken in back I was immediately accosted by a woman telling me that my sleeping daughter was not welcome since I was in the ""quiet zone"". I went to Mario's and saw Gina. She did a better job than any of the high priced salons in California!!!!! She was an extremely nice person as well!!!!
