The surroundings are eclectic and inviting. Wait staff was very pleasant and helpful. I have been to many Mediterranean style restaurants. I decided to order some traditional dishes so to have a starting point to compare. The lemon soup is a must. Smooth with that hint of tang. Chicken origanati with potatoes and the spices was delicious. The chicken was very fresh and cooked perfectly. I ended the meal with baklava with a great tasting smooth cup of coffee. Also to try is the kebab sampler, and chocolate cake. You will not be disappointed you came to this gem! Read Less

This is an interesting place that seems to exude an upscale atmosphere. I mention seems, because it lacks the fine attention to detail that the five star restaurants possess. It is not a problem however, because it is understandable. It is a Greek place. The atmosphere shouldn't be snobby, it should be inviting. The food shouldn't be dainty, it should be substantial. And the wait staff need not be bathed in the art of finery, but easy and fun to talk to. For those reasons, Plateia is a great place to go and eat your mezedes and have a great time. Read Less

Had dinner here tonight and it was fantastic! Everyone here was super friendly and courteous - from making reservations, to being greeted warmly by the hostess, and our waiter was helpful and offered suggestions on what to order for appetizers as it was our first time there. Our water and pop were never left dry. They cleared our plates after making sure we were completely finished eating. The owner even came to check in on our family to see how everything was. The entire wait staff was fantastic. Unfortunately, I did not take any pics since we inhaled our food as soon as it came out - that's how good everything was. We ordered the skordalia, feta me meli, and octapodi for appetizers; the char-grilled chicken, anamikti salad, moussaka, chicken riganati, and the signature burger for our entrees. Honestly, everything was freaking delicious. I would totally come back again! Read Less

Had a sunny stop at this restaurant on a late winter gray day.As we walked in, the hostess greeted us with a warm smile and hoped we were hungry.  After being seated at our table, a server greeted us with enthusiasm. We placed our order: Taramosalata, Greek Penne (for me) and lamb shank (for my partner).I'm not an expert, but I know what I like and I like Taramosalata--and it can be okay or good--this serving was great.  It was served with warm, almost toasty pita.  Great! The Penne was ordered because I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for.  With my first bite, I was in the mood for this pasta--a slightly sweet tomato, sausage reminding me of kielbasa and feta.I watched as a mastodon sized lamb shank was placed in front of my partner.  She enjoyed. The servings were generous.  We couldn't finish.  An attentive server asked us if we wanted items wrapped and of course we did.  During the course of the meal, a manager (yes, smiling; everyone smiles!) asked if our meal was good.  Yes, yes, yes!Postscript: The next day meal was just as good if not better. Top few restaurants we frequent a couple times a month. I would suggest the simpler dishes like the salads, kabobs, octopus, grilled anything. The heavier traditional moussaka, entrees with sauces are heavily seasoned and salty. The ambiance is fun, especially in the bar area with lots of TVs, and very beautiful in the outdoor dining area surrounded by plants and herb pots when the weather is nice. Read Less

Hands down the freshest seafood, most tender meat and variety in menu. Friendly host and welcoming staff. Definitely try the grilled calamari, Octopus and salad, too phenomenal to describe. The owners use the best Olive oil on every table, probably one of the most generous gestures for a restaurant to make you feel like home. A beautiful restaurant but the food is hit or miss. The food here is "modern" Greek. I'm of the opinion that what's isn't broke, shouldn't be fixed. Everything there is a spin on a classic or has an unexpected drizzle of something on it, and none of it is necessary. Overall it's not bad, I'm just not a fan of the style and won't be back. On another note, don't ever sit in the bar. There is a gaggle of old school Greek guys who are always hanging at the bar who will look your date up and down like she's meat and they are hungry coyotes. Fun times!! Read Less

Let me start by saying we have been to Plateia a handful of times. The food is always delicious - the souvalki, tirokafteri, and saganaki are some of my favorites. However this last time we visited on a cold night. We wanted to park our car in front, and did not want to do valet (they always change the settings in our car and we just prefer not to do it). We saw a spot without a cone (the indicator that a spot is saved for valet) and started to drive towards it. The valet walks towards us and starts shoo-Ing us away. He points to the end of the parking lot. We park far away, and almost slipped on ice on the way to and from the car. When we walked into the restaurant and spoke with the manager and owner, one said he would talk to the valet, the other said verbatim "they reserve all the spots in the front because it is hard for them to run to the cars".... WAS HE JOKING?! Then they shouldn't have valet. This left a bad taste in my mouth. Read Less

GOOD: The restaurant did a nice job giving the establishment a face lift. The octopus was impressive; perfectly grilled and tender in a zesty, flavorful lemon sauce. The soup was quite good as well. BAD: We were looking forward to a quiet, intimate dinner but were sat in the bar area with no preference asked on seating. It was dark and noisy with rowdy, tipsy patrons. The food was pricey for what it was, and I was beginning to wish we had just gone to neighboring Pita Inn. Our server was not warm, a bit unprofessional, and also forgetful. UGLY: The Mixed Grill was perfectly grilled but was salty, super greasy, and everything was swimming in a pool of XVOO. The rice was so salty it was unpalatable. We earnestly tried to enjoy our meal, but after chugging a few glasses of water, we finally called it quits after only a few bites. I knew we wouldn't end up touching the leftovers, and at $25 for the dish, I had to share feedback. Our server was perturbed we asked to speak with the manager, and when we did, he argued it was mere seasoning and begrudgingly comped the item. We were very polite and still appreciated his gesture. However, we saw our server clearly whispering about us to her coworkers and overheard the manager speaking with regulars at the bar right behind our backs, and the guys (albeit tipsy) loudly and vocally began guessing what kinds of Asians we are - Chinese, Korean, Japanese. I have never felt so out of place and discriminated against at an establishment, and we left incredibly disappointed and even saddened by the poor experience. We will never return and highly recommend Yanni's in the Glen as an alternative choice for Greek/Mediterranean. Read Less

I'd give this 4 and a half if I was able.  Just a couple little things kept it from being 5.We went mid-afternoon on a Saturday.  We made a reservation although it wasn't crowded, so we would have been fine without it.The food was excellent -- Saganaki (not flamed at table, though), Loukaniko, Kalamakia (and the fries with feta were good), Mixed Grill, Lamb Psito, and desserts of the Eclair and Baklava Cheesecake. The bread was good -- fresh and homemade -- and served with a large bottle of olive oil for self-administering.  A pepper grinder was standard table equipment, along with a shaker of sea salt. The only disappointments were the Bloody Marys I ordered -- I guess I was expecting more, and they were very plain, run-of-the-mill -- and the fact that the beers were all bottled or canned, no draft.  The first Bloody Mary was garnished with three small olives (minus pimentos, which is a plus for me), and the second with a small lime slice and two olives.  Make up your mind, folks!  (And please add a little of your own personality -- It was just a bottled mix -- and maybe some salt on the rim?)Service was good but not remarkable.  The bus staff were almost too present -- they tried to remove plates before we were through with our appetizers -- yet the server didn't remove my appetizer plate when delivering my dinner, even though it was empty and I was clearly finished. One of our go to dinner stops now is Plateia! We've visited twice in the span of a month. The first time, we were blown away by the attentive and kind service, tasty flaming cheese, and freshness of the chicken skewers and pork belly. The warm sesame bread is a great pre-dinner carb! On the second visit, I ordered the moussaka, which was a decent sized portion and came out piping hot. As far as sides, you have your choice of oven roasted potatoes, veggies, French fries, and rice. Skip the fries, as they are overly greasy. I don't necessarily recommend dessert here either. The $6 eclair slice was overly sweet and mediocre at best. Get your fill of the good stuff: saganaki flaming cheese and meat skewers! Complimentary valet parking and OpenTable reservations available here! Spacious dining room and clean interior too. In kicking myself now for not having tried this place sooner-especially since I live very close by! Plateia is really cute inside when you walk in. Bright, clean and welcoming. It seems as though it's a full house each time I come here for dinner. My first visit was a tough one because my friend and I basically wanted to try the entire menu. We compromised and ordered a few apps and entrees to sample and share. The grilled octopus is very fresh and has the perfect amount of seasoning and bite. We also had the feta pastry appetizer that's drizzle with honey and nuts. I love this dish because I tend to find baklava too sweet but still love a flaky pastry, this one is perfect as the feta cuts the sweetness and compliments the honey really well. They also start you off with freshly baked bread which is a nice touch. Some dishes I have tried-Mushroom pasta with truffle sauce- must getPork kebabs - tender and flavorful- can't go wrong with getting this dishGrilled Octopus- recommend to tryCalamari- very good as wellHummus - good app to shareBaked pasta- eh, too sweet for my taste, skipLemon soup- I wish they offered bowls of these instead of cups- must getPork chops- very thin and a bit over done- skipAnother nice option here are the crepes which appear to be popular. They even have a dedicated spot for the crepe making which you can watch if you're in the waiting area. I've always been too full to try but hope to soon Read Less

Holy cow, unbelievable bi-level outdoor patio!  This was a nice surprise.  We sat out here for lunch on one of the last days of summer and soaked in lots of sun.  A small portion of it is covered by a densely vine-covered pergola, if you're not into sunshine.  However, this does attract a few bees, FYI!  This outdoor area is enclosed by high white walls that is reminiscent of Greece.  It is deep set from the street and blocks the heavy street traffic noise on Milwaukee pretty well.  The interior restaurant space is also large and very modern. The staff is extremely friendly and professionally dressed.Onto the food... dynamite upscale Greek food!  Some of my favorites:- complimentary sesame bread, Greek olive oil, and Greek sea salt- Octapodi char-grilled Spanish octopus in a lemon olive oil sauce- Anamikti salad with Greek yogurt ranch dressing- char-grilled chicken that's de-boned and sitting in more amazing lemon olive oil sauceWe also ordered the mixed grill that comes with 5 different types of meat, but I really only liked the pancetta (pork belly) and bifteki (like kefta in the shape of a burger patty).  We also got the loaded fries which look great, but it tasted like lasagna made with fries.  Nonetheless, we'll be back to try more dishes!Note: I think it's technically located in Glenview, not Des Plaines.  It is right next door to Pita Inn. So...I had an interesting experience at this restaurant. No ownership presence and things were a touch wanky. It started with a server out front on a cell phone as I walked in the door. Hate that! Employees on cell phones is an epidemic in this country. Servers and front of the house employees in hospitality on cell phones is unacceptable.  I saw 5 different employees on cell phones including a manager and 2 hosts, like the whole time. If I'm the chef I'd be pissed that my food is being served in what can only be described as a sophomoric environment. To be clear, the food was outstanding and I will be going back. Fresh fish, the best Greek salad this Greek has ever had and a shrimp feta appetizer for the ages. Upscale Greek and med cuisine, super fresh super great. The bartender who couldn't spot an empty water glass to save his life told me with his two feet planted that you don't need owners on the property, that's what managers are for. He said he's been there a year and "seen the owner like maybe once" which I find hard to believe. This place has way too much potential for an unserious attempt at service. Somebody call the owner and tell him or her to dress in a disguise and slip in one night and experience the place. At one visit per year my guess is you might just get away with it and you may make some employee changes. Thanks for the good food!! Read Less

Tonight my husband and I discovered a fine Greek restaurant in Des Plaines called Plateia. What a great experience! The food and service were both top notch. We started with the zucchini fritters that come with this wonderful garlic spread. For the main dish, we ordered the chicken and pork skewers with pita bread and fresh homemade tzatziki sauce. I had the fries with feta cheese and my husband ordered the rice for a side. Everything was delicious and fresh. Our server, Evan, was also great and suggested their signature mules for our cocktails which were made with a special greek liquor containing cinnamon and spices, they were delicious - we ordered two rounds. The atmosphere was great and the decor of the restaurant is very beautiful. It was like we were transported to a villa in Greece.  Evan came by to check on us and make sure we were enjoying our meal and as we were finishing up, the manager, Dimitri, stopped by to introduce himself and welcome us as it was our first time. This place is been on my local bookmark list for a while and we finally got to try it and had ourselves a delightful dinner.  The place is large, clean, contemporary, and they serve excellent quality modern Greek cuisine.  Service was also friendly and attentive.  They have a very nice and popular patio dining area but we ate inside on this weekday evening.  Every dish we had was excellent.  Our party or five had the following for appetizers and we did everything ordered family style:- Keftedakia (mint meatballs)- Octapodi (char-grilled Spanish octopus)- Beet saladOur main entrées were the following:- Mixed grill plate- Lamb Kokinisto (lamb shank in tomato herb sauce, with green beans)- Lavraki (char-grilled branzino)- Char-grilled chickenBesides a complimentary birthday pastry cake, we also shared a coconut crepe for dessert. It was all good, but the mixed grill plate, grilled octopus, and lamb shank were highlights and the first two dishes are also cited as callouts in numerous other Yelp reviews and we agree. The chicken was served in nicely de-boned slices.  We also had a side of horta or dandelion with the branzino and which was interesting as a novelty item but it was on the salty side.  All in all, a delightful outing and venue and we will be back again sometime. I love this place so much!! Went here 4 consecutive times this week. Love the ambiance, good for date night or group hangout. The waitstaff as well the managers have been phenomenal - not in your face but always coming by our table to see how we are.The food, omg, the food is really good. Can't go wrong with the dips but my favorite is the Greek trio esp skordalia. I just wish they give you a bit more of the pita. Four small pieces (which is really 1 pita) is not enough for a dip, what more if you have 3.  I also like the fried calamari and octapadi: flavorful albeit a little too lemony but I didn't mind. It was cooked perfectly, not chewy/rubbery at all. For the entrees, I love, LOVE the moussaka. It's like lasagna but with eggplants and potatoes. It has a hint of cinnamon but not too overwhelming. We also had the pancetta and mixed grill. Not too thrilled with the chicken skewer--it was a tad dry and a bit bland compared to other dishes. I'm not too blown by the desserts but I'm ok because it means I won't order too much of it hahaha! The coffee's awesome though. I usually don't pay attention to coffee in restaurants because most of the time, it's not even worth mentioning. Until Plateia. Highly recommend the freddo cappuccino!Overall definitely a place worth visiting. So glad that Plateia was my first Greek restaurant. Now I want to go to Greece! Read Less

Been to this place once before when it was something else.  That place was not great!  So I stayed away UNTIL the reviews on yelp for this place!  N Yelpers...u got this on point! Went for an early dinner with friends at 5pm with a Saturday night reservation.   Still early so it was good cuz it got busy about 6-6:30!!  To the point where we had to flag down our server to get more drinks, place a to go order n then r check. Started with saganaki!!!!  I'm usually not a fan of it but eat it cuz my friends order it all the time but this seriously was the best I've ever had. Grilled octopus was amazing!  PERFECTLY grilled with balance of lemon flavor. Spinach salad with beets n figs was delicious!!!   We almost ordered another!!Grilled branzino was very light n moist altho I would have like a crispier skin.  Stuffed calamari special was our least favorite.  Although it was a large portion n the stuffing of spinach n feta was good the calamari itself was really chewy n rubbery.  No one finished their piece.  When our server came back she asked if we wanted a "box" for our calamari n we told her "no thank you, it was too chewy.  Not very good."  As she can see we licked all our plates clean except for the calamari.  Then the manager/owner came over and apologized in a way that was very authentic n we thought that was the end of it.  Little did we know that it was removed from our bill when the check arrived.  Very nice of them. We saved room for dessert!!  Ordered the Nutella with coconut n almonds and the  Ekmek.  Wasn't thrilled.  Crepe was an it chewy n the ekmek we've had better elsewhere. Beautiful sunny evening for an outdoor patio.  Maybe we will try it next time!!!!  But we are going to stick with the drinks, appetizers and salads!! Read Less

Pulled in to lot 6 or 7 cars waiting for valet. By passed and drove to the back. Went in there was a wait sat at the bar and explored the menu. Pretty much I wanted to try everything . Prior to entering the bar to the right there was a area where they make savory and sweet crepes. They looked amazing. Ordered grilled octopus it came in a lemony olive oil with thinly sliced green onion and half slices of grape tomatoes ( in my opinion the best tomato next to home grown) The first bite was a little dry I assume because it was the end of the octopus leg.,but after that it was cooked incredible and got better with each bite.I tried the grilled chicken that was marinated in honey lemon and mustard . Wow really delicious accompanied by quarter slices of yellow potatoes really nice portions. Have a nice lunch with the ample leftovers By the way I mashed the potato just so I could absorb that lemon sauce and not let it go to waste. Our waiter was Joseph who was wonderful and very informative and gave us a little lesson in the Greek language and history He told us how the chef is very much into detail and presentation along with flavor. You can taste love in this food. The manager Chris was really kind and offered us a dessert because we waited . We tried a decadent cheesecake with a baklava crust loaded with chopped nuts and some sour cherries accompanied by a incredible espresso to end this meal. From the start to finish it was a wonderful experience. Definitely will return. Read Less

A beautiful restaurant but the food is hit or miss. The food here is "modern" Greek. I'm of the opinion that what's isn't broke, shouldn't be fixed.

Read Less

Even though we had a reservation we had to wait for more than an hour which I find quite unacceptable. The lady at the front was rude n top of that. Also we were celebrating a special occasion and we did mentioned this in the reservation but our request for a special table set or something saying "Happy Birthday!" was`t made for us... even a simple appropriate greeting ... Besides all the disappointments the food was good. Unfortunately this is not a reason to make me come back to the restaurant. Read Less

Every time I go to Plateia (and I've been quite a few times), the service is exceptional... as is the food. So yummy! The interior truly makes me feel as if though I am in Greece 🇬🇷 ❤️

Great food! (If smallish portions.) Very good service. Tasteful, minimal styling and outdoor seating. If you love Greek food, this place is for you.

Read Less
