A huge thank Tip and Regan for creating such an amazing experience for my 3-year old grandson's first official haircut. Love this place. Vera is a dear and works with you, being honest if she doesn't think it will work! Gotta love that - you'll leave happy. No fuss, no fancy pretensions, just a great place to get your hair done, and relax with a mani-pedi from Regan. I highly recommend them. After reading all the reviews I made an appt with Vera. I received a voicemail confirmation for my appt with Vera a few days before.  I showed up today for my appointment with Vera and some other guy was scheduled to cut my hair?  I don't do well with unexpected changes and was a little annoyed because I scheduled this appointment weeks ago and rushed home from work to make sure I was there on time.  This could have been avoided with a considerate phone call.  Poor customer service.  Not a fan. I love Southport Hair Studio! I've been seeing Tip for about six years for cuts and color, and he has seen me through everything from long hair to a pixie, to a bob, and back to a pixie. My hair had hit the point of no return, after my previous stylist retired, I bounced around and my poor hair had fallen into the wrong hands. After some ill advised "ombre" ends, and an awful scraggly cut, I turned to Yelp...and found Vera!! Very is very good at cutting mens curly hair. I should know, I've had curly hair since I was born and spent a long time trying to deny that (I not blame the lack of media role models in the 80's with Jew-fros). I switched from stylist I had been going to for 5+ years to Vera at Southport Hair Studio more than a year and a half ago and I am always exceptionally pleased.  I have curly/wavy/unruly hair and Vera cuts it in a way that it always looks great (curly hair is hard to cut).  I also love the color that she does--it looks natural and doesn't fade.  I have a difficult schedule and Regan is always so helpful to accommodate me, often at the last minute.  I've referred several friends/clients to Vera and they are always pleased.  Friendly, professional, terrific service, and reasonable prices.   Thanks Vera and Regan! I walked in here today after calling another hair salon very close by who said my men's cut, nothing added, would begin at $68 without tip.  I called Southport and spoke with the super friendly receptionist (Reagan?) who not only said they would get me in, but that I could come in 15 minutes before they opened to begin my cut.  I was done in about 25 minutes thanks to Jimmy and his craftiness.  I got a great wash, cut and style before a work interview around the block and would recommend Jimmy's services to anyone.  Southport was clean, friendly, and above all, affordable.  I highly recommend based on my one experience here. EXCELLENT SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!! I came in at 2:30PM on a Saturday to get an ombre look on my brown hair. I was going for an ash blonde ombre look. As soon as I walked in Vera the salon owner and lead stylist took care of me right away and starting working on my hair! Talk about fast service I didn't have to wait at all. The front desk receptionist was kind and offered my  fiance and I water, coffee, etc. Very pleasant. It took nearly 3 hours to put my hair in foils! We started at about 2:30pm and Vera finished around 5:30pm! My hair is super long almost reaching my buttocks but it's in layers. Then she put me under the dryer to let the bleach do its work and finally started washing my hair about an hour or so later. Not to mention that she stayed even after the salon closed at 6pm. Everyone went home for the day and it was only me, her, and my fiance! We had a pleasant time chatting and joking about a celebrity stylist who charges his clients $1000 for ombre look in Beverly Hills. hahahaha yeah can't believe celebrities pay that much for their hair. She stayed until my hair was done and I liked it! We didn't finish up my hair until 9PM!!!!!! She stayed that late to satisfy a costumer, how much better can it get! As for the cost without tip, it was $85 for my ombre which was not bad considering how long she spent on my hair due to its length. (They prefer tips in cash so bring cash!) She said I beat the record for having the longest hair she ever worked with for doing ombre style. Ha! So it was a great price compared to other salons that tried to rip me off. I'm so relieved and happy I went to her. She has 30 years of experience doing hair. She gave me free samples of shampoo and conditioner for my hair when we were done. How nice. :) I highly recommend going here. Excellent and fast service, decent prices, and experienced professionals, GREAT RESULTS! Just an FYI there is no parking lot only street parking. There are no meters so you don't have to pay for parking just need to find a spot on that busy street. THANK YOU VERA FOR SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON MY HAIR! I've been going to Vera for several months now. She does a great job and the price is right. I currently have bangs and she taught me how to do maintenance trims so I don't have to run back to her every week, although she would be happy to do them for me in between cuts if I was so inclined. No idea why I waited so long to write this review. I've been going to Tip for 7-8 years, originally referred by a male friend.Here's the deal. I have a dense, thick, unruly, long mess of curly/wavy hair. When handled with care and wooed into submission it can be envy-inspring. When mistreated, it can send young children screaming (no, seriously, this has happened). Additionally, most hair stylists run screming when I walk in the door. But not Tip.I still remember my very first visit. I walked in sheepishly, assuming I'd be faced yet again with the "what did I do to deserve this?" look from the stylist. Tip greeted me with a smile, sat me right down and explained to me that he grew up fixing his sister's hair, whose is just like mine. He too has curly locks and he GETS IT.Since then, he's trimmed, thinned, colored and chopped off almost all my hair (Locks of Love), always with a great result. Friends and strangers alike often ask me what products I use, who cuts my hair, etc... And I attribute this to Tip's handiwork. Without the right cut, all the product in the world would do nothing for my 'fro.Beyond his supernatural ability to deal with my mane, he's honest. When I've come to him with an idea based on something I saw on some girl on the street, he hasn't just said ok and started chopping... He's consulted me on what he thinks *my* hair will do with that cut and been honest when he didn't think it would work for me.If you have hair that doesn't require any special skill to keep looking good, maybe it isn't worth the dinero to come to a salon like this. I have been a faithful client of Jimmy's for over 4 years. He is fantastic and will be very honest about what will look good, just ask! He is amazing with your hair and always takes his time to make it look perfect. When I first visited at Southport I felt very welcomed to the salon. I have continued going there and they are always very friendly! They do an amazing job on nails too. I went this weekend for a "no chip" manicure and they took great care of me. After trying different salons for no chip and seeing how much space they leave I have finally found the perfect one. She got close to my cuticle and it looked looks wonderful! Vera gives a darling cut.I was not thrilled at first. I didn't like her styling but when I got home and moved the cut around a little, I just fell in love. I'll forgive her for the styling. Tip is incredible. He works with your hair type and will tell you if something won't work with your hair type...he'll also give you suggestions on things that would work without making you feel like you're being pressured to do anything. You make the decision; Tip just helps to make you look your best. He's personable, very funny and quite talented. I went to him with hair to the middle of my back and gave him free reign to chop it off...this was about a year ago. And I have loved each and every haircut that he has given me. He even saves pictures of haircuts that he thinks I might like. The prices are great here too. What I haven't tried is color...I have seen the good work that Tip does with color on a couple of my friends; however, I refuse to color my hair until I start to get gray hair. Vera is the best! I have curly/wavy hair that never does what I want it to. Vera gave me a great cut that gave my crazy mane a nice shape and helped the curl to lay much better than other cuts I've had from the cheaper chain salons. Nice atmosphere as well - clean design (if you're sort of sensitive to that kind of thing) and great people. I usually hate talking to the hair stylists at chain places like Supercuts or something...those people all seem to hate their jobs), but Vera was great to chat with while she beautified my crazy head of hair. She also taught me how to use specific products to help keep my hair looking good. It's hard to find a stylist that "gets" curly hair, but Vera knows what's up. She also specializes in color...I didn't have mine done the last time I went, but I wouldn't think twice about it if I needed it done. I'm sure it's great...everything else was.Love this place! So, I had been seeing Jimmy at Salon Diva(Evolour) for years. He's a wonderful stylist and the location was great (close to me in the Roscoe Village area). Evolour was recently taken over by new owners and Jimmy made a move to a salon at Broadway and Diversey. This wasn't so great for me and my commute, but I was willing to make the move for Jimmy. After spending my college days going to the HairCuttery, I decided that spending about 10 bucks more would be worth it if I got a good cut every time. I tried some of the other salons in the area, but I ended up paying upwards of 40 bucks for crappy service and a crappy head of hair. I decided to go here on a whim after reading the positive reviews. The staff are extremely friendly and caring, and I have never been asked so many questions about what I wanted in a haircut. I was fed up with salons in Chicago. Over the last 9 years, I have been to about 15 or 20 salons, never returning. After scouring Citysearch for a reputable hair salon in my neighborhood, I decided to make an appointment with Southport Hair Studio. I was able to get in one day after I called, on a Saturday no less, and when I arrived, Tip greeted me immediately. I didn't have to wait even 10 seconds! Tip sat me down and we chatted about what I wanted done. He really seemed to know what style I wanted to achieve. Under an hour later, I had the best cut ever! Tip was a master with my long layers and he cut my bangs exactly as I wanted them. The reasonable price included a shampoo, cut, blow-dry, and style. The salon's environment was comfortable and low-key - not uptight or snobby. Products for sale were arranged on shelves and readily available for purchase, but I was not pressured in the slightest to buy them. The salon's staff was very friendly as well. I would recommend this salon to anyone and I plan on returning myself. And because I didn't feel pressured to buy any products on the spot, I just may go back and pick some up. Read Less

I would highly recommend this salon. I went in with my roommate and we were treated like royalty. We even discovered that there is a $10 discount for students, which can never hurt. Last week I was in a bind! I recently moved to the city and had yet to find somewhere to get my haircut. I needed to get it done pronto, because of an event Friday morning. At 4 PM, thursday afternoon, I called a few places I found on metromix/google... I was either put on hold, talked down to, or told that the next available appointment was next week. I somehow ran across Southport Hair Studio in one of my google searches. Being fairly close to my apartment, I decided to give them a call. They set me up for an appointment immediatley with the salon's owner, Vera. She is awesome. I have a peeve about hair stylists and superficial conversations. Vera is down to earth and genuine...and did a fantastic job on my hair. She listened to what I wanted and didn't try to experiment new styles on me. Southport Hair Studio is one of those salons like the one in Steel Magnolias. When you come in, the atmosphere is so inviting, not to mention the talented staff. Tip and Vera both have over twenty years experience. Regan gives the best manicures and pedicures I've ever had. They last for weeks! It's so hard to find stylists that you can get to know and who want to get to know you. They make going to get your hair and nails done a fun experience again! Be careful with parking, though.
