I rarely get a manicure since I like my nails natural, but I thought I'd pamper myself before the holidays and get one. I asked for a manicure at Miss Nails, and was expecting to get a regular, $15 manicure with clear polish. When going over colors with the attendant, I told her, clear and shiny, like yours. She then went through a process I'd never experienced--powder, ultraviolet light, etc. instead of soaking, cuticle trim, etc. I wondered what she was doing, and kept asking, telling her I wasn't familiar with this type of manicure, and she never told me I was getting gel. When the process was done, I got a bill for $50 instead of $15. She told me it would last at least two weeks, so I figured if the clear lasted longer I'd just pay and tip and not complain. After about a week, the clear started to chip off, and I told my friend about the manicure and she said I must have gotten gel, and that her nails got ruined by gel. I looked online for how to remove gel polish, and it looked complicated, with acetone, cotton, foil and filing, so I went to another nail spa to get the gel removed. The technician asked me if powder was used and when I said yes, she shook her head and said she wasn't sure she could get it off and that I might be better off letting it grow off. But the chipping was pretty bad so I asked her to try. After soaking my nails in acetone, wrapped in cotton and foil, she could only peel off the top layer. She buffed and buffed but the bottom layer wouldn't come off. She told me filing might injure my nails because she wasn't sure where my nail started under the gel coating, but I asked her to try. She was very careful, and stopped, saying she couldn't get off any more without damaging my nails. She put a coat of nourishing clear on my nails and said for me to take it off in a few days, then come back and she'll try again. I took off the clear with regular polish and my nails are rough, spotted white, and look ruined. I'll go back to the legitimate nail salon for another treatment, but my nails are sore from all the stuff done to them. The technician at Miss Nails ruined my nails with gel that I didn't know about and didn't ask for. I guess it was a slow day and she was trying to make more money. Also, if you get gel, you have to keep going back and getting them fixed, which guarantees them a regular customer. I feel taken advantage of by the technician at Miss Nails and I will never go back, and I will warn all my Decatur friends about it--not being informed about the cost or what she was doing to my nails, and having my nails ruined in the process.
