My wife gifted me with a gift certificate here. I was looking for a nice place to get a haircut beyond the normal fare. I usually get a cut twice a month, but dont mind spending more for quality. Unfortunately I experienced poor customer service, rude staff, and got to "enjoy" the stylist and desk clerk ignore me and carry on a conversation that included multiple racist, bigoted, and anti-LGBT comments. Comfortable "luxury" men's hair salon with an array of services. Really more of a spa / salon for men. Prices are higher but so is the quality of their cosmetologists. This review has been a long time coming. I have been a patron of The Men's Refinery almost since the day they opened downtown. Moving downtown, I was on the lookout for a place where I could go at the end of my work day and get a haircut/trim properly. From the first visit, I knew I had found my place.     You walk in and know this is a true barber spa. Some places try to add services such as hot towels or beard trimming, but don't be fooled. This is your one stop for a trim, a full redo, a pedi, a mani, a massage, and yes even virtual golf. You will be offered a beer or water when you walk in the door and the quality service doesn't stop there. The team is welcoming and makes a point to remember your name as well as your usual cut.They also do Groom's parties which include time on the golf simulator and a certain number of drinks. Remember that when your friend (or you) are getting ready for the big day. I will state that I have not tried out the golf simulator (which is located in the back area, separate from the barber chairs) simply because I am not much of a golf aficionado. It does look impressive and the bar close by. I have seen numerous events hosted with this as the focal point. It is truly a gem amidst downtown.     I would do you a great injustice if I did not share my massage experience here. This can be a frightful situation for some men, but it shouldn't be. It was my first massage since moving to Augusta (7 years too long) and it was after working at the Masters so my body was very tense. They have two rooms, the changing room having a full bathroom (including shower for your use before or after the massage). Of course towels and shampoo and such are already present so all you need to do is show up. The masseuse is located outside the door until you are under a large towel on the table. You are advised to get to your level of comfortability (though I recommend 100%). I did the deep tissue massage and it was amazing! When I prepared to leave, a bottle of water was waiting for me and I walked out the door feeling like a new man. If you haven't had one before, I do recommend doing this at the end of the day.*Insider's Tip-They have gift cards for any amount so this is perfect if you know someone needing a haircut, beard trim, round of golf, or full massage. I have recommended it to a number of people for their partner for Valentine's Day, birthday's, Father's Day, and Christmas.-If you're like me, you have a full schedule. Had a groom's party here. Great experience. There was a good amount of things to do: golf, "putt-skee", darts, and corn-hole outside. They even went out of their way and ordered and picked up lunch for us from a nearby restaurant. Would recommend this for any groom's day-of festivities. Read Less

I took my teenage son there to get a haircut after seeing someone else's hair and asking them where they go. Shelley gave my son the hair cut he wanted, explained and guided him in how to style it, and gave him some other tips. I am confident that my son will get a great cut every time with her. By far the best barber shop experience in Augusta. The staff here are always welcoming and hospitable. You come in, grab a beer and sit back and relax in a perfect atmosphere. They also have an indoor virtual golf simulator and offer a wide variety of massage and spa options catered directly toward men. I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area! Read Less

Leslie gave me the best hair cut I've had in quite some time. Maybe years. She was the first person to trim my beard besides my wife. The wife absolutely loved it. I never felt rushed like I have at most other places. The atmosphere is great. If you are a man that just wants a great hair cut and experience you have to go at least once. My nephew went today to get a hair cut and the lady who normally does it was not available so we made an appointment with another lady, who I was told "knows how to do a fade". She evidently does not, as my nephews hair looks horrible now. You can't undo a haircut. What a ripoff, and to top that off, the lady was very unpleasant. Read Less

Love love this place. Not only is not a man cave but ladies the full body massage is awesome. My man loves getting shaved with a straight razor, meanwhile I'm getting a massage. Obviously, I'm not a man, but I am a client that has been coming to Special Effects hair salon for quite some time. The Men's Refinery is being housed at Special Effects while they wait on their new salon to be completed. I will have to say that this is the first time I have been appalled at a worker's actions in this establishment. Special Effects has always been an inviting salon, where clients and cosmetologists are friendly. Well, not today! Whomever was acting as the rec...eptionist for the Men's Refinery this afternoon insinuated that my four precious children, who are also paying clients, were zoo animals, along with some other negative comments. When I confronted her, she seemed shocked that I would have assumed she was talking about my family-it was pretty obvious she was by the comments she was making. What a classless excuse for a receptionist. Hopefully, the owner of the Men's Refinery will explain to her how she is to deal with the public and remind her that the public pays for her to have a job. And by the way, if she wanted "her" (seriously lady, you're a receptionist, not a therapist) clients to be able to relax while having a massage, maybe she should have voiced her concerns about temporarily housing a men's salon inside of a family-oriented, non-gender specific salon.
