So. I had been looking for MY hair salon since arriving here in the DMV from LA by way of Cleveland 8 years ago...(I know, a long time). Thankfully, I've finally found my place...it's Karma by Erwin Gomez. In full disclosure, I did find a wonderful stylist earlier, her name is Johannie Jacquitte, and she's soooo talented; however, she went to Red Door at Pentagon City, and that just didn't work for me (Johannie will be at Karma in Potomac, MD -- if you live near-by, please check her out...she's good!. Fast forward: I contacted the awesome Paul Wharton of Paul Wharton Style (if you don't know him, he's a DMV and national rock star, and now an author of a style book. bit.ly/21tBwh8). I'd seen Paul on @GoodDayDC and decided to ask him his suggestion for a salon that 1) was multi-cultural; 2) customer-friendly; 3) focused on healthy hair-care; and, 4) had a stylist that was an amazing colorist. Paul so graciously responded to my email and recommended the awesome, incredibly talented Jeanice Bouvier Davis! I am beyond happy and thrilled. First of all, Karma is so professional, yet still makes you feel like you belong there. From the time I entered for my appointment, when I walked in the door 5 minutes early, I was greeted warmly and I knew this was a really good place to be. My experience with Jeanice was everything I'd been looking for and had missed since leaving LA. My color and hair care: awesome; her conversation and engaging personality: awesome; her being in-tune with my obsessive hair needs (don't judge me!): awesome; the shampoo: yes, it was awesome, too! I had the perfect styling job by Victor Palermo, who listened to my specific instructions and styled my hair exactly as I wanted, with a beautiful finish and an added subtle "twist" that improved my original cut. I had a great Beauty experience in Karma Beauty!  Very good manicure, neat and clean.  I've done a blow dry few times, always did great job.  Facials are fantastic! I strongly recommend to go to Catherine Layrle, she is a charming French lady. I enjoyed my intracueticals deep hydration treatment. Erwin Gomez is literally the best. I first saw him when I was in high school and he was at Red Door, which was a long, long time ago. In the last decade or so no one has been able to do a better job. He is well known across the industry and all over the country.  I'm back in DC and never intend to see anyone else. I know it can feel a little steep ($75/$50 first/follow up visit) but it is absolutely worth it - especially if you have full brows like I do. As long as you grow them out ahead of time, Erwin will find the best and most natural shape for your face. I know I'm gushing but I can't help it. Seeing him again has been a game changer for me. I followed Lucy from Cavalry Salon to Karma Beauty Lounge. She is a wonderful colorist. She also cuts! I've been going to Lucy for a few times now for balayage. On my most recent visit, I wanted to go lighter and we decided on a darker ash blonde/brown balayage with hints of mauve :). It turned out great! See photos attached. Let me just say, thank goodness I found this place and found Jillian! I came here in desperate need of a hair fix. I had gone to a nearby salon looking for a dark brown/reddish balayage. Well, I walked out with PINK hair. Like bright pink. The guy at the salon said it couldn't be fixed and I had a formal event coming up. At the recommendation of a friend I called Karma for a consultation. The woman who took my call was so understanding and assured me it could be fixed. She set me up with an appointment with Jillian. When I arrived at the salon Jillian was very sweet and understanding of my worry. We laughed at my hair disaster and she said she didn't understand what the other stylist had done to it. We looked at the photo of the color and style I wanted and she showed me a bunch of color choices in a book explaining exactly what she would use and how she would use it. I felt totally confident in her ability. I showed up to my appointment and she was prepared with all the colors and again explained to me and showed me what she using. She did her thing and checked how the color was developing the whole time. The results are AMAZING! my hair is no longer pink. It's exactly like the photo I showed her and I'm obsessed with it. Jillian is my girl and I can't recommend her enough. I also met the owner of the salon and several other employees, all who are very sweet. The salon is clean and stylish and I can't wait to go back. I've been getting my hair colored for years, and this salon (Rodney) did the worst (and most expensive) job by far.  My hair is naturally dark ash blonde, and I went in for my appointment with highlighted dark ash blonde hair wanting to go a light, warmer blonde.  It looked strawberry blonde at the end of my appointment, but I figured it was just the lighting (very warm lighting and dimly lit) so I decided to reserve judgment until I could look at it in better lighting.  It turns out that decent lighting made it look even worse - my hair was bright orange with random yellow streaks throughout. My roots were darker orange for about an inch down, so I had a ring of dark orange around my head.  It looked absolutely terrible and the cut + color cost about $300.  I've never had my hair come out looking so horrible; I was going to go back and ask another stylist to fix it but didn't want to risk them messing it up even more.I ended up getting it fixed elsewhere, and that stylist said that it looked like the stylist at Karma didn't lift it enough and didn't use a toner.  He also said that he only ever sees hair come out as orange as mine was if someone tries to use a box dye at home, and was very surprised that my hair was the result of an expensive, reputable salon and not a beauty school mishap.  I had to get it dyed darker than it was previously and had to get even more length taken off due to the damage associated with so many color treatments in such a short timespan.  All in all this was an absolutely horrible experience and fixing the dye disaster cost cost me at least another $300. Brows by Adrian is the way to go. As someone who is generally shy with waxing what's left of my eyebrows, finding Adrian to keep them healthy while reshaping them was the best thing that ever happened to these little guys. I also enjoy the fact that Erwin Gomez has his own product line in the salon and showcases a few other products that are quite effective. Skinceuticals Lip Treatment is a god send for my poor chapped lips. Also, EyEnvy for long full lashes instead of Latisse. Do yourself a favor and pick each of these products up. A bit overdue, since I've been here 3 times now, and each time Ji has given me a great haircut! She truly listens to what you want, and she will make sure that you leave perfectly satisfied with your cut! She is really detailed and will do multiple checks that the ends of your hair and layers are even, symmetrical, etc. Not all hairdressers will spend the time to do that nor they have the attention to detail that Ji does. Cannot say enough good things about Tim: he is absolutely amazing and does such a superb haircut. I don't let anyone else cut my hair: he is so impressive and does such a great job with long, layered cuts, and it ends up looking very modern and chic. He is also just a fun, friendly person and doesn't mind if you ask him to cut a certain part differently and will trim your bangs again later no problem. I came in for balayage. Please look at the pictures!!!The lady who did my hair knew she messed it up and was very apologetic but not without reminding me at least 5 times that "I could go back and she would fix it without charging me" Are you kidding me?! I paid $255 for her to completely ruin my hair, put it in a ponytail (after I paid for a blow out) and send me home. It is understood that it must be fixed at no extra charge! The owner was there and his comments were "you have a lot of hair" and "that's an easy fix"Well, if the same lady who ruined my hair is the one who is going to "fix it", I don't feel very hopeful. I am going back tomorrow for them to "fix it" and I will update my review accordingly. Read Less

I just wanted to write a review about the new nail artist, Erika Vasquez, who does excellent work, knows how to take care of my ingrown toenails, is flexible when I ask her to use my own new polish that I want to try, takes care of my bill at the desk, provides any service I ask of her and is always very helpful in addition to doing an excellent job without being rough and hurtful. If I could give it 10 stars- I would. Erwin is amazing. He has kept my brows in order for years. He did my makeup for both my maternity shoot and my baby photos- I felt like a Hollywood movie star. Yesterday I went to Skyler for a haircut and color- I loved it! The most amazing thing about this place though is the staff. I had to bring my 5 month old-- and being a first time mom I was so nervous about bringing a bay to a salon. Every single person there did nothing but ooh and ahh at him-- they were Soo friendly and made me feel so much better about it. They even held him while Skyler was blow drying my hair. Its rare that I give 'ok' ratings, but after nearly 4 days after my facial I was hoping to see better results. This was my first time here, and I chose it because, while I have a couple of go-to place for facials, this place was highly rated for their anti-aging facial. Naturally in my quest for everlasting youth I was going to check it out. The aesthetician was really nice, everyone was. Erwin himself was there which is thumbs up because it's rare to see owners in the salon, doing work and ensuring everyone has a good experience. But that's really all I can say. My skin looks a little worse than when I went in it. Its red in places (no, I don't have rosacea), a couple of places of scarring from extractions (yes, I get them every facial I've had and I get 4 a year for the past...well, forever, and never had that happen), and my skin looks...just there. Not bright like I anticipated with getting my skin flush with peptides. I take VERY good care of my skin, using all the right products for my skin type/age, so if anything those products should have an even better results after getting a deep cleansing. Also not to be a brat, but I didn't get the face and hand massage as described, just the shoulders (which was lovely.). So will you get a good facial here? Sure. Are there better ones out there priced at $145 (she convinced me I needed the eye treatment) or lower? Absolutely. I have only been here twice but I will never try another place again. I've tried many other hairdressers in DC but nobody does color better than Jillian! The first time I met her I had just been at a hairdressers the day before. I had highlights that looked awful, and I felt so self conscious. Jillian was so sweet and patience and took the time to listen to what I really wanted and gave me her advice. She has an impeccable taste and her technique is fabulous. I meant to write this review a long time ago since I've been a faithful customer for over two years now (I know, completely inexcusable). I can't say enough good things about Skylar and the salon but I will try:1. She has such a positive energy that sometimes you find yourself wanting to make an appointment not really because you need your hair done but because you don't come across people with this kind of energy very often.2. Aside from her energy, the girl can do some hair. I've witnessed women of all races, ages & hair lengths sitting in her chair and she never disappoints. She really listens to what the client wants but also adds her professional expertise for a look that will have you leaving the salon feeling like Beyoncé. (Just kidding, not really)3. The receptionists are always warm and inviting and they also offer you a beverage while you wait for your stylist to walk you to the back. The wait is NEVER long (thank you Jesus) and with Skyler, she makes sure you are out of there in a reasonable time. I have spent entire Saturday mornings and afternoons in a salon just waiting so I appreciate Karma's dedication to time management.4. They also do great brows and even though the owner Erwin is considered the guru of brows, I've had my brows done by Adrian and was pleased with how "natural" they looked after. Do yourself a favor and visit David at Karma. I went to David with a mini-crisis/botched color job I'd received at another salon. Within less than two hours I left the salon looking FABULOUS with a nice, rich, even color and a full, bouncy mane. I'd initially booked my appointment for a color-correction. After evaluating my hair, David let me know that - instead of a color-correction, we could achieve my desired look with a simple color refresh. He then let the front-desk team know to charge me for the lesser service, (how awesome is that?!). To me - that showed great integrity and let me know that I was in good hands. Throughout the process David walked me through each step, and explained all the products used - which I greatly appreciated. Simply put - David is gifted and I'm so very grateful that he was able to fix my "situation". Oh, and consider yourself lucky if DeMario shampoos you. The scalp massage is unmatched. Read Less

After a lot of research, I made an appointment with Adrian for a brow shaping as I am unable to get an appointment with my girl in Boston until the Fall (yikes).  11am appointment on a weekday, had it planned out to leave work for an hour and have the brows taken care of.It was hotter than a Boston girl can handle so after walking a few blocks I hopped in a cab and arrived a couple of minutes before 11.  Filled out the paperwork, had a few Lifesavers from the big bowl in the waiting area, and noticed that the person I will assume is Adrian made a few eye-contact moments with the receptionist and gave the one finger up for what I assumed/hoped really was "just a minute".I waited, waited some more, and finally at 11:15 decided that I could just wait since I was there, or I could leave.  I could leave and make it a wasted trip, or I could wait and maybe it really would have been a minute more, or maybe it would have been 15 minutes more... but who knows.  I nicely (as nice as I could) told the receptionist that I just had to go back to work since I had no idea how long I would be there, and took a cab back.The salon called me a few hours later, but I missed the call and they did not leave a message (that would have been a great time to apologize and invite me back).  That night I received an email which I assumed would have been the "we are so sorry, when can you return?" but it turned out to be an automated email telling me that I could contact them online, the website, etc.End result:  brows not done, 45 minutes wasted, and $19 for two cabs. Jillian heard my issue and managed to fix the color without destroying my hair. I love my new ash blonde highlights.She also gave me options and adjusted her treatment to my needs and desire. She did a fabulous haircut as well and my hair looks fuller and healthier. They sell also Oribe hair products which are a bit pricey but worth the extra money for the quality and the results.
