I have seen Thomas three separate times. First visit for color and cut, very good experience. Second time root , highlight color and cut, the highlights looked spotty because of the short style. I've lived in Marin for nearly two years and figured it was time to find a stylist on my side of the bridge. After some Yelp research I decided to give Marc Machado a try. Am so glad I did! I am quite pregnant and wanted to lighten and tidy up the hair a bit before my life becomes pure chaos. I loved how Marc sat down and listened to what I wanted, and then talked through a plan of attack. We ended up doing balayage and a low maintenance cut (notice how I didn't say "mom cut"), all of which I am very happy with. Ordered a package for my girl friend who lives in San Rafael. She received her facial but the lady who did nails was out so that couldn't get done same day, unprofessional. Called several times to get that part of the package done for her Birthday and never received a phone call back. She called several times same story owner not in. It took my coming in the store from Maryland and trying to get my money refunded, unfortunately last receptionist quit, so I had to deal with a new lady. Eventually had to call Atousa, the owner who didn't know about this incident, shame on her for not knowing! I told her I wanted cash back but she insisted to put it back on my credit card. The poor new girl didn't know to do it, so I got my cash after much time spent. If you buy a package from this place don't! You will save yourself a lot of heart aches! Read Less

I am so happy I found a new hairstyle in Marin her name is Kelly Rae. I been to a lot of hairstyles in Marin that didn't know what to do with my hair. She knew exactly what to do with my hair. I have thick fizzy curly hair, and didn't know how to take care of my hair. She educated me on how to take care of my hair and what products to use and what I was doing wrong. This is a review for Sophia. I received a wonderful new haircut and color. I was really bored by what I had going on so Sophia transformed my hair into something fresh and modern. Salon location and parking is excellent - but this review is specifically for Jenny Baker.  My hair and I have been seeing Jenny for 5 years and she does a fantastic job.  Not only is she punctual, friendly, professional and incredibly knowledgeable about hair, hair processing, hair appliances and hair products but she is a pleasure to talk with.  Rarely does a stylist do well at both color and cut, and Jenny is an expert at both.  She is cool if you tell her exactly what you want but if you ask her opinion she'll make you look amazing.  Go see Jenny for your hair, you'll become attached! I followed Marc Machado to this salon. It's a really nice facility in downtown San Rafael, with a styling area that is very large, clean, and set back from the street so you don't feel as if you're part of a watch-the-monkeys window display for every curious pedestrian. There's tons of parking in the adjacent garage, a pleasant changing room, and nice touches like coffee, tea, and even something a little more entertaining if you've had a long day--nothing like a cool beer or glass of wine to start the evening!Marc is great. I have super-straight hair that shows absolutely every snip, so he keeps things simple and clean, which works for me. He also does a lovely job coloring my hair, which is sliding to gray with the help of nice tones and highlights--a natural and soft look that is way better than what I'd ever imagined my hair would look like at this point in my life. Marc is also wacky fun--I know I am not going to have a dull time when I go for my appointments. And he always tosses in a luxurious head and shoulder massage--YES. Marc uses the Vagaro booking system, which is super easy, sends you zillions of reminders, and even makes paying simple and quick. I recommend Marc highly. Read Less

This is my first time using yelp for hair services and I'm finding this review very difficult to write because I am normally someone who doesn't like to share bad experiences but rather move on and forget. Today I booked a haircut appointment at this salon. I showed up and was met with very polite confusion. Laurel was very nice but stressed with yelps problems with their booking system, as they had no idea I was coming. Despite this, I only had to wait about 10 min before they sorted me out with Victoria to cut my hair. She was quite busy and seemed rushed and stressed but at the same time incredibly nice and friendly. I should have said something when I noticed her grabbing large handfuls of hair when cutting it. Ive never seen any stylist take that much but I figured she knew what she was doing. I was wrong. After the cut was done, they told me there was no time to blowdry and style so they offered to let me sit under the dryer, to which I declined and left, not knowing what my hair really looked like. I got home and slapped some color on it, rinsed, and then styled it myself with a blowout and was completely apalled at what I saw. I asked for just a trim/cleanup/layers but i got what appears to be a hack job on my head. The layers that would ordinarily blend into the overall length and frame the face ended up looking like one big step. It looks like i have a short bob but am wearing long extensions underneath. One side of my part is longer than the others and the layers start at different lengths. I have never considered myself a picky client when it comes to hair. All I ask is for a cut that is even and blends well (and I told her this). That is not what I got. I got heavily discounted for the booking mixup but I still feel like my money was completely wasted. I leave to europe in the morning and will have to search there to find a stylist who can fix it asap. I am beyond disappointed, I am pretty devastated. Please, if you are rushed for time turn the client away before doing this to another person's hair. The only reason I gave two stars instead of one is because the staff and Victoria were very nice. I've been going to her for almost a year now and she has created the cutest hair cut and nailed the desired color I wanted from the beginning. She is also very knowledgable on her product line. I got a "full highlights" appt, it looks great! The woman who did my hair, i think her name is Jenny, has a 26ish+ years experience. She inspired me to make a Yelp account. Unfortunately, I give 4 stars per the phone conversation I had with the staff. I told her I've never been there before. After talking about what services I'll be needing, she extended my appt time and said I may need a "base color" service plus highlights. She hung up fast(I'm sure they're busy), so I went online for the prices. The website estimates $150+ for highlights, and I assumed maybe $250 at the most. Sorry it was $400 (including tip) without  base coloring. She charges by the hour. I wish I wasn't surprised and feel embarrassed by my reaction. I recommend the staff inform new clients the hourly charge. Jenny is excellent though and my coworkers love my highlights.  I recommended this salon too. Anyways, I'll be returning customer.
