Maggie Mae Magnusen ROCKED MY SOCKS OFF! (Well, actually my HAIR OFF!)SITREPI usually do a $15 SuperCuts at this point in time. As my friend Jennifer W. ("Jennifer") shared in a recent Sacramento Yelp "Talk Thread", it's a wonderful thing when you find a stylist who does what you want so well. But it's a TERRIBLE thing when, for whatever reason, that stylist moves on to other things or places, like Jennifer shares in her talk-thread with her stylist moving to Seattle.MY HAIR HYSTERICS, I MEAN..."HISTORICS"For seven years, my go to stylist was Jennifer G ("Jenner"), and since she was a gothic swing-dance friend right out of Cosmetology school, I was one of her first guinea pigs for cuts & style (she even had me go to her school during her last year for her "senior" practice examples to show her instructors - yes....I felt very special). But she was in "my scene" too, so she knew what styles on guys were hot, cutting edge, and sexy to gals. I loved Jenner because I didn't have to tell her what do to because she just KNEW it. [Now, I realize that isn't a realistic expectation for most cut & style experiences, even for me, but it just emphasizes that when you HAVE it, and then you LOSE it, it really can be traumatic - from a scissors & razor perspective.]SAD SAD PANDABut Jenner moved with family back up - also towards Seattle - in Washington State, and so I am very very sad. [Dammit, Jennifer - Why does Seattle steal our favorite stylists like your fave-stylist, and my Jenner?!?]So the last several years has been a hit & miss haircut experience for me finding some very good stylists - like a couple of the gals at Master Cuts at Downtown Plaza. Sometimes I'd catch the two I really liked. But sometimes because when I showed up without an appointment, but a desperate need for a trim, they may not have been there, or elsewise busy with another customer, and I was in a rush, and so got stuck with another stylist who just didn't "get it" when came to my hair.Yet to add insult to injury, MasterCuts went out of business in the Downtown Plaza, and my fave stylists there dispersed far and wide outside the grid. So recently I've been letting my cellulose "wander aimlessly", getting longish, even shaggy (god forbid even Absent-minded professorish & Einstein'ish)..SETUPBut then my sweet friend Jennifer H. ("Jenn") and her moms that I spend many Holidays with, wanted me to do a "itty bitty makeover." And so for a Holiday uber-gift, the gals wanted to pop for some new styled hair and also to get me out of my "BLACK wardrobe rut", which I still like, but to appease them I'd let them play "dress-me-up-Ken-doll" since it meant getting some new threads. And that's TOTALLY cool.So Jenn took me to her hair place - Modella Salon & Spa - and this was an incredibly fun experience. We met Ms. Maggae Mae Magnusen who, for Jenn, was actually filling in for Jenn's usual stylist Joy. But what a GREAT WIN for both Jenn and I since Maggie did outstanding hair work on both of us.* For Jenn, Maggie Mae did a great quality shampoo wash, then colored Jenn's hair from a mid-range red to a very dark wine, and then rinse, and style cut, and follow-up rinse for Jenn at $115. Jenn's hair looks absolutely sexy, edgy and stylish for both social and work occasions.* For me, Maggie Mae did a shampoo wash, and a style-cut that really makes my hair more striking then it's been in a long time, followed up by a rinse for $35. I'm really happy with this since it preserves an edge that will still be acceptable at work.COST & SATISFACTIONI am the first to point out that this is certainly not inexpensive to a "MasterCuts" or "Supercuts" cost standard, but it was well worth the time, money and effort to get such a fantastic hair-result. [BTW - Modella's new business picture is the shot I took of Maggie Mae doing Jenn's hair!]So this was TOTAL WIN for the kinds of style that both JENN and I wanted, and makes me happy to report to JENNIFER that JENN's suggestion was the best for me since I got my hair styled by my friend JENNER, and so I'll have to report back to JENNER now (since JENNER's always been interested in this stuff) how JENN's and my trip went, and I'll be curious to hear how JENNIFER's own pursuit works out to find a new stylist when JENNIFER's own "JENNER" (or whatever her name may be) leaves for Seattle. So JENN's gift will make JENNER happy and give JENNIFER some great info on new style opportunities!THE LOWDOWN Going to the Modella Salon & Spa to experience the hair styling expertise of Ms. Maggie Mae was a TOTAL WIN for me and definitely makes me want to go back!
