This is definitely one of those businesses that yelp has gotten wrong. I am glad that I overlooked the "bad" reviews and gave this business a chance. I went in for a acrylic fill ($25) and my manicurist was Cindy. She was excellent, I explained what I wanted as the previous salon that I went to applied the acrylic thick, and I wanted a more natural look. She looked at a picture of what I wanted and that is all it took, the finished result left me extremely happy. I did not have an appointment, and I did not have to wait long because there were plenty of employees on hand. This was comforting, because at other salons, short staffing means a rushed job. The salon was also super clean. I am one happy customer!!PS- Bring cash for the tip, I didn't know because it was my first time, so I put the tip on my card, however the manicurists prefer cash tips. I have been here twice. Once with an appt. And waited 40 minutes for service and decided to walk in today and was told "there is no wait" well, it's been so far 20 minutes with no service!!! Don't lie to me on my lunch time and say "no wait" then proceed to ignore me. They say "so sorry, someone called in sick"... really in the 15 minutes I walked in??? Went in recently and I was given the wrong pedicure.  They gave me a menu and I mentioned which one I wanted but maybe he didn't hear me? They also never asked my sister which one she wanted.  I didn't realize until he was done that he had given me the basic one.  Also- had an appointment and still had to wait.  ( We were a few minutes late). Love this salon!! Great group of people and excellent services. I recommend the hot rock pedicure (#2 in their pedi menu selection) it's amazing!!!!Alvin is my favorite nail technician he is a perfectionist and so artistic!!  he did an amazing design on my toe to match my ankle tattoo, super creative. I've been around to many different nail salons and had a hard time finding a place that was right for me.. either the staff was rude, the nails were poorly done or the price was way too much...And then my mother in law recommended me to try this place out, and to ask for Don. I was the first customer of the day and was seated immediately (not the problem). The man who did my nails was extremely friendly and talkative which is great because I enjoy meeting new people (also, not the problem).HOWEVER, * I had my nails done two weeks prior to this and came in for an acrylic fill with gel polish on top. He started ripping my nails off and told me they were already lifting... once he was halfway done with my hand.* As time passed and he started rushing despite the fact that there was no one else in the salon and didn't file evenly across my nails* I was asked if I wanted any French tips or designs and I declined immediately... wait for it... at the end of drying the gel polish, he grabbed my hand firmly. I asked what he was doing and I got no response other than that I wouldn't be charged for what he was doing. He did an airbrush design on my nail without telling me what he was doing, what design or what color. I had asked for a pedicure as well, but I left immediately and went to a better salon in town to fix it. What a complete waste of my day and my money (full acrylic set and two gel manicures). Awful..I had walked in the salon and every single worker stopped what they were doing and stared at me and started talking. I did not understand them and it was beyond awkward. They made me rush and pick my color. I got a pedicure and the lady who was doing my toes not only cut me multiple times and made me bleed but she couldn't even paint my toes without having polish get all over my skin. I had planned to get a manicure done too but after getting cut on toes by nail clippers I had to stop them and leave. One of my toes is infected. I will NEVER return to this place again. Read Less

I wanted to take a break from nail work and just needed someone to remove what I had from another place (which is far from where I live). They got me in quickly, did a great job getting my nails in as natural a state as possible, and had good advice about after care and what to do if I want to get work done in the future. I've been coming here for some time now. Mostly because of location and what they used to do with the STAMPED app with by so many get one free. Great promo. Since the owner john is not in as frequently, service seems to have gone down hill. Every pedicure I've had in the last 9-12 months has been mediocre. The massage is always terrible. if you're paying $30-50 for a pedicure the massage should be worth what your paying... and it  just isn't...they're always looking around or chatting with each other. I love TJ Nails -- both Clayton and Pleasant Hill locations! It's nice to be greeted when they recognize you're a regular customer, and although they can't always fit me in short notice -- they offer me other available appointments.  This is a very clean salon, with a nice relaxing ambience and I most often enjoy my time spent at TJ Nails.  Although my favorite person Kim left last year, I have continued to go there and I now have a couple of favorites - Don & Kathy - who I like to do my nails.  I've been coming here on and off for about 6 years, and pretty consistently the past 2 years since moving back to Contra Costa County .  The location in Concord is excellent, and there is always parking.  Sometimes I'll go to their Pleasant Hill location, but the parking in downtown Pleasant Hill is not always easy.I'm very sorry to see so many bad reviews for TJ Nails -- and it makes me wonder if people are speaking with management about a bad experience, trying to get it rectified.  Years ago, upon my first visit I myself had a bad experience -- the person doing my nails was pushing me to get additional services I did not want, and her services were not done well (my nails were uneven & the white polish of the French manicure was not consistent among all my fingernails).  Rather than be upset, I decided to come back the following day to speak with management & voice my concerns & see what they would do.  They not only offered to have someone else re-do my nails at no charge, but apologized for my experience.  I ended up spending an extra hour of my time -- which was the downside -- but in the process I found a great lady Kim who I ended up going to for a long time. I'm not really sure why all the bad reviews are on here. I started coming here off and on about 2 years ago when I moved to Clayton. I've never been married to my Nail Salon, so I tend to switch it up and try new places, but every time I come back here I am always happy with the outcome. They are always able to get me in for an appt same day. I've never had to wait more then 5 mins for my scheduled appt, I am typically in and out within an hour and 15 mins (for a fill and Pedicure), and every time I leave very satisfied with the way my nails and toes look. Might be a little pricy, but the cost is pretty on point for this area. The only thing I will say is that the salon itself is not fancy, but the service is good and I've never had an issue with any of the employees. I really wanted to like this place.  But it's way over priced for the quality of service.  $35 for a fill and $30 for a pedicure!!  I asked for white gel and was told 'that doesn't work'.  'I've had it done before...' 'it doesn't work for me...it doesn't dry'.  Hmm ok..They also don't have a very large selection of quality nail polishes like OPI.  Mainly polishes you can get at Sally's.  However, If you do go, try to get Don to do your nails, he's amazing. Just had the WORST mani-pedi of my life. If you go here, do not let the middle-aged woman Tina help you. She kept pushing my legs around, in and out of the spa like I was supposed to know what she wanted. And she was the one translating for the other workers around her and spoke passable English. Granted, I was reading a book, but I did not have ear buds in, and even then a gentle touch goes a lot further than a stern "move". Then came the manicure. I have never had to ask a technician to remove ALL of the former color, let alone be told "I'm not done yet". Then she scraped the stuff off my right fingers with a bare minimum of cuticle cream, but didn't bother working on the sides of my left fingers. Shaped and filed my nails, told me to go wash my hands. Came back and asked if she would then finish removing the old polish and make the thumbs even instead of leaning. Still didn't get it right. Not a happy customer. There were two different women who did my mani and pedi. The lady who did my pedi was ok, nothing special. However when she went to paint my toes, she made a mess. It was like painting nails wasn't her forte. When she was "finished", I asked her clean up the polish around my big toe and she just kept applying more. I think the language barrier is a big issue here. When I got home I had to clean it up myself. I didn't pay $35 to do my own nails. The lady that did my gel nails started off ok, but then part way through the curing decided that she needed to sand that nail down. I thought she got rid of all the dust particles, but I guess not because it cured with bumps. Also, she was quick to apply plenty of nail oil after, and now I know why. Half of my gel nails are dull and half are shiny and pretty. To top it off, the cleanliness is definitely questionable!  And I find it ironic that the ladies all wear gloves. Rude and unprofessional.Stop in for mani/ pedi while my son was at Kung Fu across the way.  I thought it would be convenient and better location since it's so close to class.  Wrong!  They are not friendly and super rude!! First time I have ever experienced this from nail salon.Owner was available to talk about complaint but he didn't seem to care.... just kept text messaging and looking  down while I was talking to him.  Super unprofessional. Maybe they suck so much that they are pissed off because of it.... The quality of the nail job I received was not good at all. Walked in today for a pedicure. I was taken right away and that was nice, about the only thing nice...First, the massage chair barely worked. Why have massage chairs for your clients if you aren't going to maintain them? So they can charge more, that's why!Second, the older woman who did my pedicure seemed nice, I think...she didn't say more than 5 words to me until it was time to pay up! RUDE!Third, the leg and foot massage that I got was more like she was just rubbing to get the lotion to soak in. There was zero pressure! Why anyone would pay to extend that massage, is beyond me! NO WAY! Lastly, THE PRICE! HOLY MOLY...$30 FOR THIS CRAPPY PEDICURE? REALLY???!!!??? It was my fault that I did not check the prices before sitting in the chair. However, every other salon in the area, charges no more than $24. IT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! I am still in sticker shock!I really should have come here before going there. After almost a year of being a regular customer with my now 9 yr old daughter, I finally decided to stop going. You would think they would greet us by name by now but every time we go it's as if it's our first time there. Also, what really did it for me was that the guy that works the register always puts inappropriate content on the tv. Violent movies and a show called 10 ways to die. I had to tell my daughter to not look and she was really uncomfortable. People go to a salon to relax, not watch violent crap. I wouldn't play the Notebook at a bar! Pedicure was just okay. She did a great job cutting my nails down, but everything else was meh. Foot scrub was super short, leg massage was more like legs being motioned, and the paint job on my big toes is on both my toenail and my toe (I asked her twice to clean it up- pic posted also).
