1. Tiffany gave me a cut and color to fix my over-bleached hair. She gave me a beautiful A-line cut and took me from blonde to a gorgeous auburn. (In July) 2. Tiffany dyed my hair a few months later back to a deep rich brown (trying to get my natural hair back after all that damage). (2 weeks ago) 3. After doing a color-match with my dye job, Terri (different stylist who specializes in extensions) helped me get my length back with 14 inches of great lengths micro-bonded extensions. They look flawless and I've gotten a million compliments - even from strangers! Was definitely worth it and really gave me my confidence back. Both Tiffany and Terri have been so supportive and amazing. Would highly recommend. **no one ever talks about extensions so I will say that yes, they can be expensive. If you are going to go for it, make sure you go to someone with experience like Terri. It does require at-home maintenance to keep your look polished and beautiful. I have very curly natural hair and do all the curly girl things: 3b/c, no poo, no sulfates, parabens, etc. I came here after a salon in Gilbert (that shall not be named) fucked up my last Deva Cut. I found this place on Yelp because they had a Deva stylist and the reviews were good. When I made my appointment it was kind of far off, 3 weeks almost, but the receptionist asked if I wanted to be called in case of a cancellation. Luckily I got a call a couple of days later and came in. Terri was very knowledgeable and kept it real. We first talked about my hair, routine, questions, and concerns. If you have curly hair you know this is a good sign, in general, your stylist needs to know about you before going in. The cut itself was great, she added shape back into my hair. I told her I wanted a trim only with shaping but once we talked about it she let me know if I wanted to get rid of damage, like I said, I'd need more than a teensy trim. That's why I say she kept it real, I know she was right about that so we went with that option. I paid $65 for my cut, that's kind of a lot, right? Not so much for a Deva Cut, it takes time and preparation to understand curly hair and that's along the lines of what I've paid at other curly salons. I've enjoyed the girls who have cut my hair here, they've always made my hair look good. The receptionists seem very unprofessional though, and make it frustrating to make an appointment. Also, it's upsetting when the stylist  does adds something to your hair during the washing process without telling you that it costs $45! (The B3). I took my daughter to Megan Jones to get her hair done. We had my daughters hair done by Megan while she was in beauty school. Her talent is so AMAZING that we followed her the the Salon. Not only is she amazing at what she does her personality matches. The salon itself is great. I love how all The employees come around and check out each other's work and praise them. This review is so over due. I researched Altered Ego, then discovered a friend goes here. Her hair always looks great, so I asked who she sees. I meet Matthew a few months ago. I went to him to fix a bad hair cut from another place. He sat with me for awhile showing me, with my hair, what it would look like and how he was going to fix it. He even said it would take some growing out time to get it right. However, I LOVED it! I recently went back for a trim and finally decided to do the big chop! Again Matthew showed me how it would look, talked about pros and cons, and taught me how to style it. I can tell, he truly cares about his clients  and wants to satisfy. The salon staff are always so nice and very friendly. Another I really love, they don't push products. I actually had to ask them what he used so I could purchase it when I was paying. I like the way they confirm your appointment by text messages during the week of and on the day of your appointment. I am so happy I discovered Altered Ego and Matthew. Been going here for 6+ years at this point. (In fact I'm surprised I haven't left a review already) I learned early in college that great clips, etc. Just doesn't 'cut it' for getting quality hair cuts, especially for a trendy guy. My haircut isn't by any means complicated, but it's surprising how BADLY men's haircuts can be done. I like a pretty standard cut, with an 'elegantly disheveled style.' I've now been going to two of the owners regularly (Matthew & Billie) for years and while the price is certainly more--you get what you pay for. The staff is friendly, accommodating and behind that you'll ALWAYS walk out looking like a million bucks. Every time I go I feel like I'm being pampered and that's part of the experience. I cannot recommend them enough. They are a bit of a drive for me as well, certainly closer locations, but I wouldn't dare let anyone else touch my hair. In the few occasions Matthew had to cancel, they've always accommodated with back-ups that do a stellar job. A+ Read Less

I have been going to see Tawni at Altered Ego for more than 10 years now, since I was 12 years old! I have never left there feeling nothing short of amazing. Everyone is always so friendly, stylish, and they always know exactly what you want! Plus, there is a coffee shop connected to the salon so you can sip on a yummy drink while getting your hair done. My whole family goes here, and so do several of my friends. Tawni has done my hair for prom, homecoming, my wedding, you name it! I got the absolute worst haircut, i had an appt. Yesterday with chickie, i showed her a pic of the pixie haircut i wanted. She acted like she could do a pixie, i would have preferred she be honest with me and say she couldnt do it. She completely butchered my hair, i knew it was a mess when i kept seeing her to try to hide the extreme blunt cuts she was putting through out.. i am more pissed at myself that i even paid for a horrible cut and experience.  I was only looking for a simple pixie cut to wear. I have a loyal stylist i go to, but i needed to get in asap and my appt isn't till jan 2016 so i decided to give this salon a try.. HUGE MISTAKE!!! i am beyond pissed that i hv to walk around with this chicks non experience.  If you want to go cause its easy to get in, DONT DO IT. I have to now do further research to find someone to fix this youngen's mistake. The salon needs to hire more experience personal... I expect the salon to fix thier mistake, you cant just be hiring ppl that have no experience, and when a potential client calls and asks to be set up with someone with experience cutting short hair then thats what should have happened.  You cant be going around allowing your stylist to fuck ppls hair up! HUGE shout out to Kasondra for rescuing my hair! After a botched balayage-turned-90s highlight job that was done at another salon, I stopped by Altered Ego for a consultation since it was on my way home. When I told the very nice receptionist what had happened, she grabbed Kasondra and Kasondra took her time in telling me how exactly she would fix it and how much it would cost. I booked an appointment for two days later and couldn't be happier with the results. Kasondra is also very sweet and made the entire process comfortable and enjoyable. The atmosphere of the place is also awesome, the decor is really pretty and all of the stylists there seemed to be having a good time and enjoying each other's company. After years of going to beauty schools I get my hair done, my sister recommended that I made an appt here for some tlc on my over bleached, dead hair. I called in the morning (about 10) and the lovely receptionist set me up with an opening a stylist had that afternoon.  The salon is bright, friendly, and clean. My stylist, Angie, was awesome. I wasn't sure exactly what direction I was hoping to take my hair, so she listened to all my wants/concerns and then gave me two options on what she thought would present the best results. My hair was light brown and had streaky blonde highlights. She foiled the blonde and then added a fresher brunette color throughout. My hair turned out looking 100x better than when I had entered the salon. I cannot wait to go back for my next hair switch up. Read Less

I have to give a review to my nail tech, Brandy. She is ridiculously talented. I've never been one for getting my nails done; until Brandy. I've always hated the way acrylic made my nails feel. They're always so brittle once the nails come off, and every time I would get them done, my nails would hurt for a few days after. NOT with brandy. She uses all hard gel on me and doesn't file my nails down to paper thin before applying my gel. Hard gel is similar to the strength of acrylic. A lot of shops will claim to use hard gel or "powdered gel" which is just a cheap way to cut gel with powdered acrylic. Did I mention it's nice that I can understand her? And she doesn't hassle me with "I'll do that for you for 5 dollars more" my entire appointment. Although get used to booking ahead, her schedule fills up quickly because she's just that good!Before Brandy, I knew nothing about nails. She educated me and keeps my nails strong and beautiful. I'm very hard on my hands, and shellac would just peel off too quickly. She is seriously worth every single penny! Lauren was my hairstylist. She is an absolute magician when it comes to color corrections! I came in with a bad dye job that turned everything orange and I walked out with a beautiful blonde ombré - which is what I wanted all along! Went in for a blow out for a friend's wedding. Angie was meticulous with my hair to make sure that it look just right, I was happy about it, and it held through the evening's festivities (I have fine hair and it usually falls out quickly). She also took the time to tell me what kind of products she was putting in my hair and what they would accomplish.I left the salon with glamorous curls that I know I could not have done on my own. My stylist Sheya nice girl took more than one client at the same time, I was left under dryer for to long. As I was sitting under dryer getting highlights I was getting more and more nervous about the amount of time I was spending there and sure in off my hair got damaged. I have never sat under the dryer that long before and I should have said something knowing my hair, but I thought that she as the professional knew what she was doing. Lorrie has been my hairdresser for over two years now. She is awesome! She does great weaving of highlights and lowlights and if you ever want to go more daring or tone it down or make any changes at all, she really listens to what you want. She also is great at giving advice if you're thinking about making a change in hairstyle. I had really long hair and wanted to get a shorter cut. I brought in a photo of the cut I thought I wanted. Lorrie is very visual, gave me advice for what she might change in the hairstyle to make it work for my features and then gave me exactly the cut I was hoping for! I am very pleased with Alter Ego. I have been there 3 times and I always love the results! Laura is the stylist who cuts and colors my hair. She does a great job on the color. It looks very natural. She has given me several great haircuts and I get lots of compliments about my hair. Frankly, I don't like being at the salon for more than a few hours. I have been trying to find a regular hairstylist since I moved to Tempe 2 years ago. I found Altered Ego through another review site and like here, there were tons of great reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. I saw Amy who was the first person to have an appointment open. Before coming in, I had pretty thick side swept bangs that had really grown out and I wanted to trim them up and get an all around reshaping, nothing major. At first Amy cut my bangs very thin and wispy and just on one side of my hair. I asked her to make them a little thicker and more side swept which is a pretty popular style so I thought she would know what I was talking about. It still wasn't coming out right, so she went to get the owner, Tawny. I thought Tawny might step in and try to restyle my hair. Instead she just tried to convince me to like it and then told me that if I didn't, to just wait until it grew out. Finally, I gave up and went home. Later that day, I went out and bought some haircutting shears and completely redid my bangs. I am much happier with them and have had several opinions from people who say they look better now. Not only am I disappointed with having paid a fair amount of money for a haircut I wasn't happy with but I was also disappointed with the stylist and owner basically telling me I was wrong for not being happy with it. I'm not sure what the clientele base is here, but I did not get the feeling that they mostly catered to a young, stylish crowd which is more of what I was after. I usually let the stylist use any sort of new or creative techniques they have to try out something different and I'm happy as long as it looks good. Since I've been going to Terri, my hair now looks fabulous. She really knows her stuff. The style and color she does to my hair is excellent. I trust her with her judgement and she has never disappointed me. Terri is also fun to talk to. She is very interesting and has a great sense of humor. Ive had many chances to watch my wife get her hair done. The staff member who does her hair talks to people more than keeping an eye on what shes doing. Poor service includes waiting sometimes up to thirty minutes after our appointment for her to get started. I think she overbooks. As far as the quality goes it all depends on the day. We called one time to say we would be ten minutes late and my wife paid for it by shotty work. All in all being a guy, maybe this review isnt much help but I really do feel I am a expert at watching how careful a stylist can or cant be. For the amount of money we spend you would think a stylist could keep her attention on work and not chatting with other customers and staff. Read Less

i walked through the front door of the salon and recieved blank stares from the three employees and the front desk. i should've turned around and walked back through those doors. the stylist asked what i wanted done. i went over a few wishes & she nodded as if she knew just what i wanted. thirty silent minutes later i ended up with the exact cut i DIDN'T ask for. the next 15 minutes were filled with requests to fix the things i didn't like. all i could see were more and more chunks of hair falling to the floor. i eventually said 'it's fine' just to get her to stop. when at the front desk paying for my cut the employee short changed me $15, when i told her all she said was 'oh...' and put more money on the counter. i walked out of the salon with tears running down my face. i will never return to that place.
