Wish I had checked here first but had previously thought of Yelp really only for restaurants. I don't do nail services very often so I don't know all the differences between the options you can get. I'm always embarrassed to go in because I have either neglected my nails for so long that they are a disaster, or I've made a mess of them trying to do things just so at home, usually in a hurry. Boy did they see me coming.I arrived as a walk in an hour before closing and was immediately greeted by a very busy woman who was multitasking. I asked if they had time for a manicure, noting that many of the mani and pedi chairs were full. I really wanted a pedi too, but I wasn't in the mood and my husband was waiting to go home after a long day at the office. Plus I wasn't thrilled with showing off my neglected feet after such a day. The woman said they had time for the mani and asked what I wanted. I explained that I didn't know all the differences between the wraps and gels and acrylics, etc. (my mistake to admit this, trusting they would give me good advice to best suit my needs!). I told her I just needed a simple, professional, French manicure with short tips. She suggested shellac, which I had never had. She said the colors would be very natural, which is definitely what I wanted, but quoted $45. Very steep, but I didn't have many choices at this late hour and I wouldn't have another opportunity until at least the weekend--too late for my needs. I figured that would be the price I would pay for not being able to be patient. Unfortunately, I expected better than I got.The woman directed me to a comfortable chair and the salon is nicely outfitted but a bit noisy and busy. A young man came out and took great care of me. He was friendly and funny but not overly talkative. He did a good job cleaning up my nail beds and he was gentle, never hurting me and never being impatient in the least. He also was good at not being hurried in his demeanor even though he was efficient. However, I wasn't all that thrilled with the end results. I did not get tips added, all I got was a heavy polish and handpainted french whites at the end of my natural nails. This wouldn't have been so bad if my nails weren't in such bad shape to begin with. Two nails were way too short and really needed tips added. I didn't have time to fuss, so I just let him continue with the shellac. The painting was OK and definitely better than I can do (on my right hand anyway since I'm mostly a righty) and the colors are very natural. He did multiple coats, which is definitely better than the quality I've received in the past with a fast airbrush. For this reason, it took him a long time to complete (45 minutes). I had one little bubble that he did notice before me and try to fix, but he didn't completely resolve it and there are places he did not complete on the tips. He also did not shape all the nails the same, nor did he ask if I wanted straight, blunt or rounded ends. One thumb tip is more straight and the other is more rounded. At least it's not that obvious (unless you hold them all still next to each other to show them off). Since he took so long and worked by hand, which can be very hard and tedious, I did tip him $9 (20%). He should have done much better for that amount, but I also didn't want to punish him for the salon owner's overpriced services.Overall it was a big improvement on what I came in with and the job has already lasted for a couple of days (that is a plus considering my past experiences from other salons). Still, I didn't feel like it was a good value at all and I wouldn't go back unless I was in a jam. For $54 (including tip), I felt they took advantage of me. Next time I'll feel better about paying near $90 for a deluxe mani pedi elsewhere although my friend gave me a tip on where to find one for only $45 in Wasilla.FYI for the poster that said that being Downtown doesn't give them the right to charge more: I agree, to a point. They do have higher overhead due to higher rent. Mall rents are traditionally exorbitant and often include extra charges based on a percentage of sales and pass throughs of high maintenance costs (parking garage, security, cleaning, reserves for capital improvements, taxes based on land values, etc.). This particular mall is owned by a national group who works to sign contracts nationwide for some of their occupancies. Those brokerage fees drive up the costs of rent too. Adding to that, Downtown rents are usually even higher due to the higher land prices (scarcity and all that), which also drives up those property tax pass throughs. STILL, the salon should live up to their higher prices and if they don't, competition should force their prices down. We need to vote with our feet (and hands) and go elsewhere, feeding their better competitors. In turn, if they want to keep their prices down, they can relocate to a cheaper location, although they may not get the same traffic, which could lower profits. Read Less
