The quality of my Gel Manicure was very good, and my technician was friendly and thorough. However, they were very over crowded and it was clear many appointments (including my own) were very late. It seems like the classic case of a company that wants to move through lots of business and has a hard time saying "No" to walk in customers. As a result, do not expect your appointment to be on time. This being sad, if you get the younger of the two technicians, you will have a nice time with a wonderful nail service. Last time I got my nails done I was absolutely maddened when I left! I had been going to Hippy Nails for over a year and was always happy with my nails, however an older lady with short curly hair did mine last time and ruined the whole experience for me. Hippy Nails has lost my business because of his lady. She was so rude to me, cut my cuticle, burnt me with chemical, cut my nails way too short she could barely file them and was very rough with my hands! She was very demanding and every time I slightly moved my hand she would yank it back towards her. After I gave her $0 for her horrific service she was even more rude and didn't even say bye. My nails turned out OK, however the filing she did was all inconsistent and my nails weren't the same length of shape. After she did my shellac there was an air bubble on one my nails so I politely asked her to redo it which didn't make her happy. She just simply filed the bubble off of the shellac and put a top coat back over top of it. NOT at all happy with my service from this lady and because of it they have lost my business!! Loved it! I needed a new nail salon as the one I go to was too far but they did a great job.  So I tried them and what I loved about my service (gel fill), was my nails were a WRECK, a total disaster. Mary did a great job, was very thorough and shaped them very nicely. What I liked most, is she kept using my name and my name is not usual. She said it right and talked to me, making me feel very welcome and more importantly like she valued my business and wanted to make a connection. I am in sales so to see someone in the salon industry let me know that they want my business and don't just rely on doing a great job means a lot. I got shellac nails in light pink. They look great and only cost $20. However it smelled very strongly of chemicals and gave me a headache. They were talking about me in their language the whole time. The lady doing my nails would say something and the other ladies would turn and stare at me, I found it rude because it was obvious that they were talking about me. Read Less

Great prices, good colour selection, but bad experiences.I've been here 3+ times with my girlfriends for shellac manicures.  I love the selection they have for colours, and its what keeps me coming back.  There is one staff member that works there that is extremely rude.  While doing my cuticles he made me bleed.  Instead of apologizing he got mad at ME, and made me feel horrible.  Not everyone has perfect nails, and he made me feel incredibly self-conscious. Everytime I go back I try really hard to have a different staff member help me, as everyone else is fine.   If it wasn't for the cheap prices and great selection of colours I'd never be returning. There are no hip, hip hoorays rushing past my lips after I examine my manicure/ pedicure from this place. We went here as I thought booking a group appointment for 5 people (a pre-stagette outing with just the bridal party) wouldn't require more than a days notice. I was wrong, every place I called wasn't able to accommodate us, unless we went in 2 hours apart from one another. The bride-to-be found this location and after I scanned the other reviews on yelp, thought it would be a decent spot, they also said they could accommodate our party at the same time.Now Canadian Hippy understands accommodation a little differently, people kept walking in while we were in the midst of our appointment and they kept accepting new clients. Now my math wizardy isn't the best but when a nail salon has 8 clients and 3 technicians what do you get?A long wait and a half done job!Two of our party sat in the foot bath for a good 30 mins without being tended to as they started catering to the walk-in appointments. When we were seen to, the buffing and polishing wasn't done very well, they didn't get us to rinse our hands in between so all our nails had little bits of gunk underneath the polish. The one birdesman who opted to join us, didn't get polish for his manicure, but even the cuticle grooming wasn't done well and his nails were trimmed unevenly.I felt like we were in there forever and we basically were. I also am a little freaked out about the sanitation, they would microwave the tool sets, but I didn't see much effort (or any cleaning!) of the foot baths. At least give me a false sense of hygiene!The price is right, but there are other places in Calgary who offer the same or cheaper rates, like Diamond Nails and they do a much better job. Read Less

I have been to Canadian Hippy Nails a few times now.  I have had the shellac manicure, gel nails, and acrylic nails.The Shellac manicure: Overall it is 4 stars.  Very good and lasted 3 weeks!  They put multiple coats, which is what I expected and shaped my nails nicely.  They almost forgot to put lotion on my hands and give me a massage so I had to remind them.The gel nails:  Getting a full set was pretty good and lasted a while.  They do however placed tips first, and then use white acrylic powder to do the white tips.  I don't think this is the correct way at most recommended places like Frilly Lilly.  The gel fills are a bit painful.  I didn't like that.The acrylics: Now let me tell you, I have had acrylics for over 20 years (decided to try the new thing with gel and shellac) and it never HURT! The way they perform the fill is one word "shortcuts"....  If your acrylic is lifting, they will place glue to stick back on... WRONG. the correct way is to remove the acrylic (using an artificial nail works the best to do this) and then place a new tip and acrylic.  When doing a fill, they use the filer and grind a line into the acrylic to create the new line for the white powder for the tip! I don't like this method either but seems to be how fills are done.  I prefer if they would remove both the pink and white acrylic (if there is no lifting) and place primer, then new pink and white powder.  My results after getting my nail fill is cracks in the pink part of my nails.  Then they break off..... not happy.One plus - the people there have been very nice.  I just think they need to change their technique and not do shortcuts. I was very much looking forward to getting my pedi before going off on holidays.  Needed to have cute feet right?!I can only give them 2 stars because even though my experience was good, the result of the pedi was unfortunatley not :(The place is very clean and bright, the staff is very nice and personable.  They were quite fast which may be why the result wasnt really what I expected it to be.My feet looked good when I left but a day or so later I noticed that they hardly removed any of the built up skin on my feet which left me sad.  I know I only paid $35 for the pedi but I did expect that at least my feet would look smooth and nice for longer than just a few days.I dont believe I will go back, the only reason I get pedis is to have my feet cleaned up, I'm not even that serious about the nail polish that is done as well....I'm glad I tried them out, but I will go somewhere that will do a better job even if it means paying a bit more for the pedi. For $45/person, you can get BOTH a mani and a pedi and it takes them less than 45 minutes to do BOTH.At one point there were 3 different women working on my hands and feet.Yes, they are chatty and no they don't offer translations, but they do a FANTASTIC job and like I said, they do it at some of THE best rates in the city.I was very impressed with their work and I can't wait to book my next appointment when I plan to take full advantage of their $35 acrylic nails deal. $35 for acrylics you ask?!?!? So, I feel really bad only giving this place 3 stars, but I have to.I went in to have some hair removed (where shall remain nameless) and it was the worst experience of my life.  It hurt more than any other wax I've ever had.  I almost stopped halfway through because of the pain.  The lady waxing me went over the same spot so many times I'm pretty sure she just started taking layers of skin.  I was sore for two days, which isn't normal.  I'll give her props because she was extremely thorough, but to the extent that it almost seemed amateur.  The reason I feel so bad giving a poor review is because the lady was SO nice.  Seriously.  She made me feel so comfortable and welcome.  It was like she had been my waxer for years before, even though I'd only met her that day.  She talked to me the whole time about her business and family, and even about her time spent in Vietnam.  It was nice to talk to her.The prices at this place are pretty good too.  $45 for a brazilian wax; $10 for eyebrows; $25 for a leg.  The nail side of things seemed a little better too.  $35 for full acrylics... not too shabby, eh?  My waxer said the reason they charge little is because they care more about the customers than over-charging people.  She said the lower prices bring the people back.  That's probably true.Sadly, though, the wax was bad enough to send me elsewhere next time.  I'll admit that the hair is all gone, but at a far to painful price.  Yowza!  I won't be going back to have another wax. Located right beside Starbucks in Garrison Woods (Mardaloop) I love this place! The only reason it's not getting the full five stars is because of the atmosphere... It's pretty plain and not even remotely spa like, but they do a great job at a great price! I'm not good at the whole "appointment" thing when it comes to nails... So for me walking in to an always busy studio and being told yes they can fit me in (even though they juggle quite a bit) makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside :) They are the most reasonably priced and thorough that I have found in Calgary! And if you are looking for good name I will give you 3! Sylvia (who I think is the owner) Lynn (who has been there forever, and is great) and my favorite "new" addition would be Tony (that's right, a boy!! But he is great in spite of being a boy!)
